Cabbage farmers looking forward to cooler weather
Harvest conditions are too warm for cabbage and rain is causing greasy/slippery field conditions. Farmers are looking forward to cooler weather conditions with temperatures around 35° F. A major objective of harvesting and storing cabbage is to get the heat out of the cabbage before and during its storage. Storage cabbage is kept at 32° to 34° F. Cabbage picked during November is optimal for storage since the head is much cooler due to the weather, consequently lasting much longer than cabbage harvested in warm temperature conditions. more

Candlelight Walk planners expand scope
After the astonishing success last year of the inaugural Candlelight Walk in Brockport, no one in the community is surprised that organizer Inga Songbird has plans well underway for a follow-up. However, residents might be surprised to find out how many more special touches have been added to the December 2 event. more

Churchville acquires thermal imaging camera
An MSA Evolution 4000 Thermal Imaging Camera has been purchased by the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department to benefit residents of Churchville and Riga. The high-tech equipment can help firefighters save lives and limit property damage. more

Hamlin Republicans unopposed
Hamlin voters will elect five Republicans to office on Tuesday. Supervisor Austin Warner, Councilman Paul S. Rath, Councilwoman Shirley Hollink and Justice Richard Moffett are all unopposed incumbents. Thomas Ingraham is making his first bid as highway superintendent. more

National Trust's Main Street awards open for nominations
The National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Center is now accepting applications for the 2002 Main Street Awards, which celebrate the nation's best revitalized downtown's and main street leaders. The Great American Main Street Awards recognize five communities each year for overall achievement in commercial district revitalization. The National Main Street Leadership Awards, new this year, identify three key leaders in commercial district revitalization in the categories of civic leadership, business leadership, and Main Street hero. more

Navajo Code Talkers share World War II experiences
From 1942 to 1945, some 400 Navajos had a pivotal role in Marine assaults in the Pacific. Using code that they developed in their own native language, they transmitted critical battlefield messages that the Japanese were never able to decipher. more

Ogden justice unopposed
Republican Conservative candidate David Murante is making his first bid for elected office as Ogden justice. Murante was appointed to the post last October, but November 6 marks his first political run. more

Parma property tax to see slight increase
In a meeting that lasted more than an hour-and-a-half Wednesday night, October 24, the Parma Town Board showed the resolve that has led to decreased taxes over the last decade. more

Town Justice is Parma's only contested seat
Town Justice Kathleen F. Mullaly, who lost her endorsement from the Republican Nomination Committee, will be running against newcomer James E. Maley Jr. in the hopes of being re-elected for a second term. more

Towpath enhanced thanks to volunteers
More than 60 persons took part in the Adopt-a-Trail end-of-the-season "sweep" in the Town of Sweden in October. They helped to inaugurate a state-wide program, modeled on the Adopt-a-Highway program, intended to improve the cleanliness and appearance of the Erie Canal towpath. The town board is sponsoring the effort within the town limits. more

Area code to change November 15
Beginning November 15, the area code for Orleans, Genesee, Monroe and Wyoming counties will change from 716 to 585. Parts of Livingston, Ontario, Yates, Steuben and Allegany counties will also be affected. more

Caregivers offered support
Support groups are one way for caregivers to find information and support for their caregiver roles, and Orleans County Office for the Aging will be starting two new support groups in November. Meetings will be held on Monday, November 5 at Community Partners, 524 N. Academy Street, Medina, and on Wednesday, November 7 at St. Mary's Social Center, 13 S. Main Street, Holley, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. more

Kidspiration Music Festival set for November 11
This year, childrens' choirs from Spencerport area churches will congregate at Trinity Lutheran Church on Sunday, November 11 at 6:30 p.m. for the second annual Kidspiration Music Festival. Childrens' music directors from area churches will conduct their groups as they perform a unique anthem of praise. more

New holiday laser show dazzles Strasenburgh Planetarium
A holiday laser show at the Planetarium: it's been a Rochester family tradition for over a decade. This year, the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium sparkles with a brand-new show - Holiday Laser 2001, opening Friday, November 23 and running through Tuesday, January 1. more

New VA web site promotes Vets-in-Schools program
In support of President Bush's initiative to unite schools with America's veterans for Veterans Day, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has started a Web site, "The Veteran's Experience." more

Spencerport bridge signs to be upgraded
Monroe County Legislator Dennis Pelletier recently requested that the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) review the train overpass on Union Street in the Village of Spencerport. He has asked the DOT to investigate the possibility of increasing the number of signs in the area and warning motorists, especially truck drivers, of the low clearance. more

Spencerport to register walkers for exercise/health program
Registration for the Walk for Exercise/Health Program will take place in the Spencerport Terry A. Taylor School, Large Group Classroom (former cafeteria), 399 Ogden Parma Town Line Road on November 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. Registrants may use the main entrance in front of the school. Persons unable to register at this time may register in the Spencerport Schools Volunteer Office, Administration Building, 71 Lyell Avenue, on November 14 or 15 from noon until 2 p.m. more

Strong Health program considers gender in depression treatment
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly twice as many women as men are affected by a depressive disorder each year. Research shows that before adolescence and late in life, females and males experience depression with the same frequency. Because the gender difference in depression is not seen until after puberty and decreases following menopause, researchers hypothesize that hormonal factors are involved in women's greater vulnerability. more

Twig Scholarship winner gives back to Lakeside
While attending SUNY Fredonia, Aleka Schuth was the recipient of the Lakeside Twig Scholarship and promised to return to Lakeside when and if there was an opening for her. Schuth, of Kendall, is now a recreation specialist at Lakeside Beikirch Care Center. She has been previously involved at Lakeside Health System for many years as an activities assistant/feeding aid while in school and as a music therapist at the Lakeside Child Care Center. more

Members of NY National Guard will receive expected benefits
According to New York state Assembly-man Charles Nesbitt (R,C-Albion), legislation has been passed that will allocate $300,000 to fund the state's National Guard college tuition program. more

Byron-Bergen announces new 5-12 executive principal
Donna Schalge is a native of Greece, New York and has lived in Hamlin for the past twenty-five years. She holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Marietta College in Ohio, a master's degree in Secondary Mathematics Education and a Certificate of Advanced Study in educational administration from SUNY Brockport. In addition, she has completed several graduate hours in computer science. She recently began study at the University of Rochester's Warner School of Education in the doctoral program. more

Spencerport schedules public hearing on district internet safety policy
The Spencerport Board of Education is holding a public hearing on the Children's Internet Protection Act: Internet Content Filtering/Safety Policy. The hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on November 13, just prior to the regularly scheduled board meeting, at the Spencerport Schools' Administration Building, 71 Lyell Avenue. more

Northwest AARP offers driver safety program
To reduce auto insurance premiums by nearly 10 percent, take the AARP Drivers Safety Program - a community service course sponsored by the AARP Northwest Chapter. Four points, from violations, can be forgiven with successful completion of this course. Participants or their spouses should be 50 years old. Preregistration is required. more
