A heavier than usual infestation of a fungal disease known as Tar Spot has developed on area maple trees due to, in part, wet and cool spring weather. more

Final touches are being made for the installation of Brockports Firefighters Memorial marking the September 11 heroism, deaths and injuries of New York City firefighters at the World Trade Center. more
Brockport hosts informational meeting for landlords
An informational exchange meeting was hosted August 7 by Brockport's Code Enforcement Officer Scott Zarnstorff for members of the Brockport-Sweden Landlord's Association and other interested property owners. more
Charles W. Smith to lead Lakeside
After an extensive search involving more than 60 candidates, the Lakeside Health System Board of Directors has hired Charles W. Smith to replace Robert W. Harris who has retired. Smith began his new role as CEO of Lakeside Health System and President of Lakeside Memorial Hospital on August 5. more
Churchville board discusses options for building use
Churchville trustees continued a discussion about whether to allow public use of the Village of Churchvilles new municipal building at last weeks Churchville Village Board meeting, and decided to continue writing a policy, possibly to be used during a one-year trial period. more
DOT lights up two Hamlin intersections
Flashing lights were recently installed and should soon be operational over stop signs at the intersections of West Fork Lake Road and Brick Schoolhouse Road and East Fork Lake Road and Brick Schoolhouse Road. more

Local Empire Zone improvements benefits workers and business
Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester) announced state approval of revisions to Rochester's Empire Zone - potentially creating 4,200 new jobs for the area and retaining another 3,300. The changes will boost at least 12 local projects - including the Port of Rochester, Sibley Center, and Midtown Plaza. more
Madeleine Albright to speak at Lakeside Gala Dinner
The featured speaker at the Lakeside Foundation Annual Gala Dinner will be Madeleine Korbel Albright. Albright has the distinction of serving as the first woman Secretary of State and is the highest-ranking woman in the history of the U.S. Government. As Secretary, Albright reinforced America's alliances, advocated democracy and human rights and promoted American trade and business, labor and environmental standards abroad. more
NYS Council on the Arts grants awarded
State Assembly Republican Leader Charles H. Nesbitt (R,C-Albion) announced the award of three grants from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) for a local municipality and a community-based organization. more
Spencerport campus busy with construction
People driving past the vast amounts of dirt and heavy machinery around Spencerport High School and Middle School wonder just what is going on. With the piles of dirt and clouds of dust, it is difficult to imagine the blue prints that must be behind it all. more
West Nile virus hits Western New York
A dead crow found last week on Utica Street in Brockport has been sent by the Monroe County Health Department to a special Department of Environmental Conservation laboratory near Albany to be tested for West Nile virus. more

honored with Silver Award
The Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley recently honored 144 girls with the Silver Award, the highest honor a cadette girl scout (ages 11 through 14) can earn. more
Hats needed for fashion show
The Women's Society of the First Baptist Church in Chili, 3182 Chili Avenue, is planning a special event, Sundae Sunday on August 25 at 3 p.m. This is a show for all ages. A fashion show of hats, followed by ice cream sundaes, are planned. more
Two bodies discovered in Clarkson home
Monroe County sheriff's deputies and medical examiners are still working to determine the cause of death and identities of two individuals who were discovered in a house at 2227 Ireland Road in Clarkson. The decomposed bodies were discovered August 6. more
Politically Speaking:
County helps secure $3.5 million in state funds
State funding for four affordable housing developments in the towns of Gates, Irondequoit, Clarkson, and the City of Rochester has been secured with help from efforts by Monroe County officials. The $3.5 million in state grants, low interest loans, and tax credits will support efforts by private developers to construct affordable rental housing for seniors, the developmentally disabled, families, and homeless women with children. more

Byron-Bergen names 9-12 House Principal
David R. Pescrillo, a native of Niagara Falls, was recently named 9-12 House Principal. He has lived in West Henrietta for the past 20 years. He holds a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from SUNY Buffalo, a master's degree in special education and a certification of advanced study in administration. more
School age childcare option available
The Brockport, Holley and Kendall School Districts will be offering before and after school child care through the Brockport YMCA beginning in the fall. The programs will be held at the Hill, Holley and Kendall Elementary Schools and are open to school age children (kindergarten through fifth grade for the Hill Elementary and kindergarten through sixth grade for Holley and Kendall). more
St. Paul Lutheran School (Hilton) plans orientations
St. Paul Lutheran School in Hilton is providing a series of orientations for parents and students to familiarize everyone with school policies, procedures, and calendar events. Handbooks will be available, as well as information concerning PTFL, music, sports, latchkey after-school childcare, and other programs. more

Mystery trip planned for Hilton-Parma seniors
Plans have been made for the Hilton-Parma Seniors to embark on one of their popular one-day Mystery trips on Friday, September 20. Included in this trip are lots of activities as well as a luncheon. Participants should bring a jacket, hat and gloves. A fast food stop "on your own" en route home is also planned. more

On August 15 at Ricci Meadows Golf Course, the Barre Deli will sponsor their 8th annual Charity Golf Tournament. The Orleans County Lifeline Replacement Program will be the beneficiary this year. more
Hilton team wins Gus Macker 3 on 3 Tournament
On the weekend of July 27 and 28, four Hilton boys aged 12 made their annual trip to Hornell to play in the Gus Macker 3 on 3 double tournament that draws some 400 teams at various boys, girls, men's and women's age groups. more
Kendall wins first place in the Silver Division
Kendall came from behind to defeat Rush-Henrietta 8-7 in the Championship game of the Grace & Truth Baseball, Majors All-Star tournament held July 29 through August 3 at the First Bible Baptist Church in Greece. more
Moon named as Spencerport girls basketball coach
Mark Moon has been named as the Spencerport Rangers new varsity girls basketball coach. He replaced Don Wierzchowski who coached the Rangers for 14 years and passed away this May after a battle with cancer. more
Reserve for waterfowl season at Iroquois Refuge
Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is accepting cards for the reserved waterfowl hunt days on the refuge. Reservations are required for opening day (Saturday, October 19), and the next Saturday, (October 26) of the state regular waterfowl season, (pending approval of the recommended waterfowl hunting season). more
Spencerport wins Crosstown Baseball Championship
Spencerport won the Crosstown League Baseball Playoff Championship with a 7 to 1 victory over Greece on July 30 on the Spencerport varsity field. The team of 16 year olds finished in first place during the regular season with a record of 13 wins and only one loss followed by three straight wins in the playoffs. The other teams in the league were Greece, Hamlin, Caledonia, Bergen, Chili, and two teams from Brockport. more
Tim Milgate Golf Tournament to benefit Golisano Children's Hospital
More than 150 golfers will take part in next week's third annual Tim Milgate Golf Tournament. They will gather to raise funds for Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong, and keep alive the memory of a man who family members say loved children. more
Travel team wins Division
The Spencerport Kickers from the Spencerport Soccer Club won the Boys Under 14 Travel B Division in the Brockport Soccer Tournament on Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21. The team won all four games and had to come back from being one goal down to win the Championship game with a score of 2 to 1. more
Trout and Salmon Derby kicks-off August 16
The 2002 Fall Lake Ontario Counties (LOC) Derby will take place August 16 - September 2 along the seven counties that border Lake Ontario - Cayuga, Jefferson, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Oswego, and Wayne. Grand prize for the largest fish caught during the derby is $20,000 and a free mount donated by Mt. Man Taxidermy of Orleans County. $100 prizes will be given for the largest fish caught each day in four categories: salmon, lake trout, brown trout, and rainbow/steelhead. more
