Bridge closing announcement a surprise to all
The sign on the Canal bridge brought surprising news to all. No elected government officials, emergency personnel, school district personnel or downtown businesses had been alerted to the Route 259 Erie Canal bridge's two-week repair status. more
Hilton grad, resident needs community support in donor search
Friends of Dan Putnam, a Hilton resident, are asking the community to take a few moments to help save his life. "I know this sounds cliché, but this couldn't have happened to nicer person," said Matt Vidas, a friend of Putnam's. "I mean he really is one of the most decent, kind-hearted people I know." more
Murray launches town newsletter
As a way to spread the news to residents about what is going on in the Town of Murray, Supervisor Hank Lehning initiated the idea of a townwide newsletter. The first newsletter was delivered to readers of Suburban News West Edition the last week of October. more

Shoebox project provides outreach to children worldwide
Children worldwide who are affected by war, poverty, disease and disaster receive aid through Operation Christmas Child, a mission project of Samaritan's Purse. In the Solomon Islands, local Christians took shoebox gifts up into the mountains where there had been bitter fighting between ethnic groups. more
Still time to get a flu shot
There are numerous clinics throughout Monroe County that will be providing the flu shot. Unlike previous years when only high-risk groups could get the shot, people of all ages are encouraged to get the vaccine this year. more

SUNY Brockport Professor Emeritus William Heyen
William Heyen, professor of English and poet-in-residence emeritus at SUNY Brockport, has been selected as the 2003 Writers & Books Award Winner as the "Individual Who Has Made Life-long Contributions to the Rochester Literary Community." Heyen will be honored at an awards ceremony and reception at the Rochester Academy of Medicine, 1441 East Avenue, on November 21. more

Breast cancer survivor speaks in Holley
Holley School District staff and community members had an opportunity to hear Holly Anderson, executive director of the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester (BCCR) and breast cancer survivor, speak about breast cancer risk factors, diagnosis, treatment, services provided by BCCR, and her own experience with having the disease. more
Chili Library sponsors "Food for Fines"
Chili Public Library is giving patrons the opportunity to cancel fines on their records by bringing in donations of non-perishable food and dry goods during the week of November 17-23. The library will cancel a fine for each item donated for the food pantry. This does not include lost material charges and accounts sent to the collection agency. more
Christmas assistance applications scheduled
Individuals and families in need of Christmas assistance should apply for help at The Salvation Army during the week of November 10. The Salvation Army provides Christmas toys, food and winter clothing as part of Christmas Assistance program. more
Diaz to be the subject of EPA meeting
The Environmental Protection Agency will host a meeting on November 13 to discuss plans for clearing the toxic chemicals out of the Diaz Chemical plant. more

Lions Club recycles eyeglasses
A major activity of the Lions Clubs in this and other countries is collecting used eyeglasses to be reprocessed and fitted to people in the Third World, following the challenge posed by Helen Keller in 1925 of becoming her "Knights of the Blind." The Lions Club of Chili is making it easier for the people of North Chili to donate their used eyeglasses. more

In the end, to build or not to build proved to be not as important as to change or not to change. The Town of Parma turned out in impressive fashion to say keep Republican Supervisor Rick Lemcke for a seventh two-year term. more
Incumbents retain seats in Sweden
Town of Sweden Supervisor Nat O. "Buddy" Lester, III garnered 2,127 votes in his bid for re-election on Tuesday, November 4. more
Orleans County election results
While many of the races for town supervisor and council member seats were unopposed, there were a couple of contested races in Orleans County. One of the most anticipated races was for Orleans County Sheriff. Scott Hess, former Village of Albion police chief, soundly defeated former Orleans County Deputy Sheriff Philip McKenna for the position. Hess received 4,710 votes while McKenna received 2,768. more
Republicans sweep posts in Hamlin
While there was a stronger challenge of the Republican Party than in past years, the result remained the same in Hamlin - a Republican sweep. more

NASA Astronaut Colonel Pamela Melroy always knew she wanted to go into space. She knew this at the early age of ten. "My parents always told me I could do anything I wanted to do." During her recent visit to Churchville-Chili Intermediate School, Melroy encouraged CCIS students, "to look on the inside to find out who you really are." more
BOCES 2 Career and Technical students earn college credit
Sixteen students in Rick Gage's Television and Radio Broadcasting class at the BOCES 2 WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center will earn six credits through Monroe Community College at the completion of their two-year program in the TV and Radio Broadcasting class. The students must pass a comprehensive state-wide exam to earn the dual college credits, three in radio production and three in television production. more

During the capital project excavation of the Hazel Jenkins Wing of Hilton's Village Elementary School, crews uncovered a copper metal box which served as a time capsule during construction of the school in 1956. more

Sweden Senior Center honors retiring Head Cook
Sweden Senior Center Head Cook Joyce McCullough received the Retired Senior Volunteer Program Champion of the Year 2003 Award. Head Cook at the Sweden Senior Center for 23 years, McCullough will be retiring in December. She has cooked for the center, as well as the Ogden, Hilton and Riga Centers and is known as a constant supporter of the center. more

Byron-Bergen won their third consecutive Section Five boy's soccer title after a 17-3-1 season and faced East Rochester for the Class C State Tournament play-in game held at Holley. more
