More than 50 people gathered recently to discuss plans for a Farmer's Market in the Village of Brockport. Representatives from about 25 farms attended the meeting which was hosted by Scott Winner, director of economic development, and Carrie Maziarz, farmers' market manager. more

Brockport village residents continue to question budget figures
Following a board meeting that lasted close to three hours, residents of the village of Brockport still had many concerns regarding the village's proposed budget which carries with it a 9.98 percent tax rate increase. more

Churchville-Riga celebrates Arbor Day

Funding for walkway to Veteran's Memorial received
Monroe County Legislature Peter McCann and Parma Town Supervisor Richard Lemcke have announced $13,000 for funding for the construction of an Americans with Disabilities compliant walkway at the Veterans' Memorial at the Parma Town Hall. more

Hilton family physician honored by medical society
Dr. Leon Zoghlin, a Family Practitioner in Hilton, and attending physician at Lakeside and Park Ridge hospitals, will be honored this year at the Monroe County Medical Society Annual Meeting with the prestigious Edward Mott Moore Award. more

Historic Preservation grants available
Applications are now available to eligible municipalities and not-for-profit organizations to compete for funds through Preserve New York, a grant program of the Preservation League of New York State and New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). more

Some Ogden residents disgruntled by re-assessments
As previously reported (April 18 editions), 2,800 Ogden property owners received reassessment notices in early April. Most property values went up, on average 15 percent. A few assessments were lowered. more

Two land use seminars offered in May
The Cornell Land Use and Community Development Seminar Series will continue in May with two programs at Cornell Cooperative Extension - Monroe County. On Thursday, May 6 at 7 p.m., Professor Tom Lyson from the Department of Rural Sociology at Cornell will discuss the results of his research on the impact of big box retail on local wages and tax base and the desirability of strengthening local business. more

Union Street sidewalk project aided by grant
Funding for the construction of 1,000 feet of sidewalk on Union Street between Parkway Drive and Meadow Farm South was announced last week by Monroe County Legislator Mary Valerio. Funding for this project comes as part of over $2.2 million in Community Development Block Grants designated for Monroe County. more

Adams Basin bridge closes for season April 30
The Adams Basin (Route 36) lift bridge over the Erie Canal will be raised on April 30 for the navigation season. It will be lowered to accommodate vehicular traffic November 15. more

Career and Technical Education student-built house for sale
A three-bedroom Ranch home built by BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education carpentry; plumbing, heating and air conditioning; and industrial/residential electricity students will go up for auction on May 27 at 5:30 p.m. (preview at 4:30 p.m.) more

C-C Board of Education approves proposed school budget
The Churchville-Chili Board of Education approved a proposed school budget of $55,577,308 for the 2004-2005 school year. This proposed budget represents an estimated tax rate increase of 4.28 percent. The proposed budget is a 5.52 percent spending increase over the current budget. more

Plans have been made for Hilton-Parma Seniors to cruise the Niagara River on the Grand Lady for "Sailing with the Stars," a Las Vegas Review in full costume with live impersonations of superstars, including Englebert Humperdink, Judy Garland, Tom Jones, the Andrew Sisters and others. more

Bright Raven gymnasts win at USAG Championships
Bright Raven gymnast Sabrina Hill of Hamlin was named the State Champion in uneven parallel bar competition at the USA Gymnastics Level 7 Championships held April 17-18 in Mohegan Lake. The Brockport High School sophomore earned first place on bars with a score of 9.275 competing in the 15 and over age division. more

G&T Basketball clinches fourth victory
The 7th and 8th grade Grace and Truth Basketball clinched their 4th tournament victory in the Spring Invitational Grace and Truth tournament held at Northstar Academy. The team is coached by Mike Brado and Mike Dwaileebe. more

Kincaid triple drops Cadets
Joe Kincaid's two out-two strike, bases loaded triple in the first inning drove in three runs and starting pitcher Nate Parrino struck out nine batters over six innings as Class AA defending champ Brockport defeated Hilton 4-3 in high school baseball. more

Kostarellis & Wolfe lead Rangers in tennis
Juniors Dimitrias Kostarellis and Chris Wolfe handily won the second doubles match 6-1, 6-1 for their first varsity win in leading Spencerport to a 6-1 victory over Greece Athena in high school boy's tennis. The match, held in cold weather, was the first played by the team on the new courts - part of the multi-year sports facility project. more

Rough start for Bees in softball
Byron-Bergen dropped their first game of the season 28-0 to Oakfield-Alabama with just six varsity players and four starters in the lineup due to spring break. Junior Mandy Taylor was the only Bee to reach base with a second inning single. She stole second and took third when the catcher's throw went into center field, but was left stranded. more
