Brockport Merchants add new showcase to July event
This year, the Brockport Merchants Association is adding a Saturday feature, the Community Showcase, to the weekend events set for July 8, 9 and 10 in downtown Brockport. In addition to Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m to 10 p.m., Main Street will be closed on Saturday from King Street to the Strand Theater from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. more

Celebrates 100th birthday
Marjorie Van Cise celebrated her 100th Birthday on June 13 with an open house at The Landing in Brockport, where she lives. Hosting the celebration were her three daughters: Sue Baker of Waterport, and Carol Bott and Ruth Rath of Hamlin. more

Chief Hutchison retires from the Parma Special Police
Frank W. Hutchison of Parma, long time volunteer Auxiliary Police Officer, Special Police Officer and Civil Defense Administrator for Town of Parma, retired after 30 years of service to the Town of Parma on June 14. more

Clarendon mulling zoning changes for Hanson
In what Town of Clarendon Supervisor Richard Moy hopes will put an end to "locking horns" with a multi-national company, officials are attempting to come up with zoning ordinances that it hopes will prevent the town from going to court against Hanson Aggregates New York, Inc. more

Clarkson historian's archives note special visit
It was one year ago that Hazel Kleinbach retired as historian of the Town of Clarkson and I became the new historian. How time passes. Over the past year I have met many wonderful and interesting people and am excited when I look forward to the year to come. I have found that one of the jobs of historian is to wade through and categorize all sorts of printed material. Yesterday's news is now history. more

Culinary competitors wanted for Daily Specials Cook off

Maziarz, Wexler elected to Brockport trustee posts
In an election overshadowed by what some village residents called "political nastiness," residents in Brockport remained true to the village's non-partisan tradition. Mayor Josephine Matela agreed that the campaign got a little nastier than she imagined it would. more

The 2004 Monroe County Fair is looking for entries to its first ever-open Pinewood Derby. In cooperation with the Boy Scouts of America and sponsored by Chase Pitkin, the 2004 Monroe County Fair will host a Pinewood Derby on Sunday, July 18 during the Monroe County Fair. more

Preserving the past in Chili
On February 22, 1964, more than 140 years after its founding, residents of the Town of Chili felt the time had come to begin preserving the town's history and the Chili Historical Society was formed. There were 20 members in attendance at that first meeting - some of whom are still alive today. more

Town of Chili receives life-saving device
The Town of Chili recently received a donation of an automated external defibrillator (AED). The AED was installed at the Chili Town Hall Complex. The AED was donated by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield of Rochester. more

The Monroe County Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Town of Chili and the New York State Department of Transportation, are sponsoring a public input meeting to discuss the Ballantyne Road corridor study. more

Brownie Troop 977 donates quilts to newborns
Brown Troop 977, part of the Girl Scout Brockport Service Unit, presented nurses in Lakeside's Obstetrics Department with a donation of quilts. These quilts will be donated to babies born at Lakeside. Two crib sized quilts were hand sewn with special hypoallergenic materials that will not harm the babies in any way. more

Concert series begins in Hilton
The Hilton Parma Gazebo Band starts its concert season on June 23 at 7 p.m. at the gazebo in Hilton. It will be preceded by the Strawberry Social from 5 to 6:30 p.m. sponsored by the Historical Society. All concerts are free and held at 7 p.m. at the gazebo, near the Hilton Community Center, on Wednesday evenings from June 23 to July 28.

Contest winner will be librarian for a day
A contest at the Seymour Library in Brockport will let a winner be librarian for a day. Participants can pick up an entry form at the library and explain why they would like to be chosen. more

Family collects cans to help trolley station project
Five-year-old Alanna Harrington of Spencerport with the help of her family, has collected soda cans and donations totaling $55 for the Spencerport trolley station project. Under the direction of Bernie Cubitt, the trolley station has been renovated and money is now needed to move it to its original site in downtown Spencerport. more

hosts second annual volunteer recognition

In an effort to recognize the people who volunteer their time to improve the quality of life for others, Greece Community Partners began a volunteer recognition event. On Saturday, August 21 at 3 p.m., the second annual ceremony will take place in association with the Town of Greece, in the town hall and under the town tent. more

Preserving small wetlands program scheduled
Preserving small wetlands will be the topic of a presentation by the League of Women Voters. The public is invited to the hour-long program at the Chili Conservation Board's June 28 meeting. more

Robotic Milking Center opens at Springdale Farm
Springdale Farm opens the Riedman Robotic Milking Center with a Dairy Day Celebration on Saturday, June 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 696 Colby Street in Ogden. more

State transportation commissioner honors employees
New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joseph H. Boardman presented 58 NYSDOT employees with the Commissioner's Award of Excellence, honoring individual and team accomplishments, innovations and acts of valor. more

Maziarz/Hoyt bill to improve Workers' Compensation
A new bill providing for the electronic deposit of workers compensation payments was recently passed by the NYS Senate and Assembly. Senator George D. Maziarz (R-C, North Tonawanda) and Assemblymember Sam Hoyt (D-Buffalo, Grand Island) said the new bill gives workers compensation recipients the option of having their compensation payments directly deposited into a bank account. more

Nesbitt receives multiple endorsements
Assemblyman Charles H. Nesbitt (R-C-I Albion) reports he has received official notice that he has obtained the endorsement of several major political parties. He has been informed of the support of the Republican, Conservative, and Independence parties throughout his district. Petitions are currently being circulated on his behalf in Genesee, Monroe, Niagara and Orleans Counties. more

Elementary students wrap up a year of community service
The Caring Kids Club at Brockport's Ginther School celebrated a year of giving back to others through community service. More than 600 kindergarten and first-graders marched to the high school waving flags and red, white and blue streamers. The theme of the day was "You're A Grand Old Flag." more

Ginther School students beautify their garden
In a courtyard inside Brockport's Ginther Elementary lies a secret garden of sorts, a serene place with a pond and a garden where students like to go to learn and relax. Kindergarten students in Tracy Robb's and Geri Rightmyer's classes at the Brockport Ginther School recently took their learning outside the classroom and helped beautify their special place. more

Interact Club lends many helping hands
Hilton High School's Interact Club has only been in existence for a few years, but its members are enthusiastic for service. Linked to Rotary International, Interact is advised by Family and Consumer Sciences teacher Helaine Donn, who is a Rotarian, and Hilton Rotarians Al Alton and Judy Nesbitt. Students meet to strategize ways to make themselves available to help wherever possible. more

'Kindness Week' celebrated by Brockport students
Because being kind to others is such an important part of every day life it has been turned into a week-long lesson for second- and third-graders at Brockport's Barclay Elementary School. They recently deemed one week as Kindness Week, with the theme of "Kindness, Pass it On." more

LMH Twig Association awards scholarships
The Lakeside Memorial Hospital Twig Association recently awarded its annual scholarships to 10 deserving students. These scholarships are presented to students who are working toward a degree in the health care field. more

Miniature Steam Engines
On June 11, Hilton's Quest Elementary School held a schoolwide Science Fun Day which included a workshop on steam presented by Don Stilson of Hilton. The "Wizard of Steam" was fascinating to Ben Griffiths and Sam Wolcott. more

Students prepare for recyclable regatta
The first Recyclable Regatta, a project of Spencerport High School's Principles of Engineering class, is a capstone project in which students design and race life-size boats made of recyclable materials. more
