A celebration of new ministry at St. George's Church
St. George's Episcopal Church on Wilder Road in Hilton is installing a new rector on Thursday, May 30 at 7 p.m. The Reverend Krista Cameron comes to Hilton from Indianapolis, where she served as interim rector for Church of the Nativity for two years. Presiding over her installation will be The Right Reverend Jack McKelvey, Bishop of the Diocese of Rochester. St. George's invites everyone to join the church in this celebration of new ministry. more

American Legion officers elected; May activities scheduled
The officers of Hiscock-Fishbaugh American Legion Post 788 of Hilton elected for 2002-2003 are as follows: Commander Bert Marlatt, 1st Vice Commander Dave Harris, Adjutant Al Howe, Finance Officer John Barclay, Service Officer Bob Hall, Chaplain Dave Goodrich, Sergeant-At-Arms Brayton Miles. They will take over their duties at the June meeting. more

Beautification of Brockport
Last fall, Mayor Josephine Matela and members of the Garden Club of Brockport planted spring bulbs in the Village of Brockport's newly created Remembrance Park, on Park Avenue near South and High Streets. more

Cub Scouts clean up at Community Center
On Tuesday, April 16 the Cub Scouts of Pack 228 participated in their annual Conservation Project. This year the boys trimmed shrubs and cleaned up the front area of the new Sweden Community Center. more

Holley senior citizen becomes oldest SUNY Brockport graduate
Joe Andreano was just a few days away from graduation and even though he didn't have a job lined up, he wasn't nervous. In fact, he already seemed to be content with the idea of retirement. more

Kendall ready to begin construction project
The heavy equipment is in place, the water lines are waiting for installation and now all the Kendall Central School District is waiting for before construction can begin is dry weather. "The road was roughed out about two weeks ago and then the rains came," Superintendent of Schools Michael O’Laughlin said. more

Land transfer is hot topic in Chili
A tiny parcel of land, locked within a subdivision in Chili, has been the topic of conversation among town residents this spring. The property in dispute is a small 4.4 acre town park adjacent to Ranchmar subdivision in the center of town. This section of land, which had been gifted to the town in 1954 by builder Joe Entress, has received only minimal attention in recent years, partly because there is no provision for parking. more

Monroe County awarded money
to secure Parma's Scharping property
Monroe County has been awarded $251,000 under the Great Lakes Coastal Watershed Restoration Program to acquire 35 acres of lakefront property in Parma for preservation. This land, known locally as the Scharping property, is the largest of its kind left in Parma. "I'm very excited about it," said Parma Supervisor Rick Lemcke. "This property is postcard-nice and full of pristine wildlife." more

Seat belt crackdown to target teens during Memorial Day week
The largest nationwide seat belt enforcement effort ever will kick-off just before Memorial Day weekend as more than 11,000 law enforcement agencies in all 50 states conduct child passenger safety, seat belt and drunk driving checkpoints and other special enforcement activities as part of the Operation ABC Mobilization. more

Soapbox Car Race set to go on June 1
Clarendon's third annual Soapbox Car Race will be held on Saturday, June 1. This is an event that promotes positive youth development, as well as family and community involvement. The family builds the car together and then will spend the race day together, either working as the "pit crew" for the racer or as spectators cheering from the sidelines. more

Spencerport firemen respond to apartment building fire call
Spencerport Volunteer Firemen were called to a fire in a multiple occupancy structure at 26 Church Street, in the village of Spencerport on May 11 at 3:45 p.m. According to fire department Public Information Officer Lieutenant Brian Krywy, a female occupant of an upstairs apartment smelled and saw smoke, went to investigate the origin of smoke and heard the smoke detector going off. So, immediately left the building to call 911 from a business across the street. more

State funds earmarked for canal improvements
More than $50 million in state funds will be flowing through the area as part of a five year plan to revitalize the 348 mile stretch of the Erie Canal from Lake Erie to the Hudson River. more

Red Cross CPR for the
Professional Rescuer recertification class offered
The American Red Cross in Orleans County will offer CPR for the Professional Rescuer (Recert) on Monday, June 24 at 6 p.m. at the Holley Fire Department. Certified Red Cross Instructor Patrick Dann of Holley will teach the course. This course is designed to teach professional rescuers, those with a duty to respond, the skills to respond appropriately to respiratory and cardiac emergencies. more

Churchville-Chili Team competes in National FIRST Competition
The Greater Rochester Robotics (GRR) team 340 of Churchville-Chili Senior High School competed at the National FIRST Robotics competition in Orlando, Florida. Nearly 300 teams, some from as far away as Brazil and Britain, competed at the event. Churchville-Chili made it into the semi-finals, where they placed sixteenth overall. This event marked the end of the 2002 season. However, planning has already begun for next year. more

Jump Rope for Heart a success at Churchville Elementary School
On Monday, May 13, Churchville Elementary School third and fourth grade students jumped all over heart disease and stroke by participating in their second annual Jump Rope for Heart Event. Ninety students participated in this year's event raising over $5,400 for the American Heart Association. more

Preparations for Spencerport Senior Bash underway
The parents of the students of the Class of 2002 are finalizing plans for the drug and alcohol free Senior Bash to be held immediately following the Senior Ball on May 31. The event will take place in and around the East Gym at Spencerport High School. more

secures Alan Keith-Lucas collection

Roberts Wesleyan College has received, as a gift, the collected works of the late Alan Keith-Lucas, longtime professor of social work at the University of North Carolina and a pioneer in the integration of Christian faith and social work practice. Lawrence Ressler, director of the Master of Social Work program at Roberts, accepted the collection from Keith's daughter, Susan Carson, this spring. more

SUNY Brockport student wins prestigious writing award
Sonja Livingston, a graduate student in the Department of English at the State University of New York College at Brockport and a counselor in the Hilton High School, won an international creative writing award for a nonfiction essay she wrote while enrolled in the fall 2001 Creative Essay class taught by Judith Kitchen, SUNY Brockport lecturer and writer-in-residence. more

Youth apprentices present their senior projects
Students completing the Youth Apprenticeship program at WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center this year presented their senior projects at Eastman Kodak Company on April 25. Student presentations demonstrated the student's ability to research and solve complex work-based problems using applied learning competencies: communication, analysis problem solving, teamwork, organization and customer focus, commitment to excellence, adaptability and learning, and personal attributes. more

FIRS selects Monroe County to host International Congress
The Monroe Sports Development Corporation (MCSDC) and the Greater Rochester Visitors Association (GRVA) has announced that Rochester will be the host of the 2002 Federation Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS) Semi Annual Congress on Thursday, August 1 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. FIRS is governed by the International Olympic Committee and is the international governing body for figure skating, speedskating, and in line hockey. more

Kim Hill won the girl’s Pentathlon, Meghan Rowcliffe won the girl’s 3,000 meter and Matt St. James was tops in the boy’s 1,600 meter for Churchville-Chili at the Rush-Henrietta Invitational May 11. more

Simmons wins cheerleading championship
Churchville-Chili Senior Bonnie Simmons won first place in the senior individual category of the Greater Rochester Cheerleading and Dance Championship. Her routine had to include at least four jumps, a cheer and a dance. She choreographed her entire routine, which also included tumbling, gymnastics and dance moves. more

Spencerport Soccer Club takes first place
The Spencerport Soccer Club Boys Under-12 travel team recently took first place in their division at the Rochester Sports Garden indoor soccer season. They defeated Fairport in sudden-death overtime in the championship game. Shawn Potter coaches the team. more
