of Holley $6 million road construction project

Eric Smith, owner of Glenside Sales & Service Inc., said he has already been affected by the upcoming Route 31 road work. Smith has been a longtime business operator in the village of Holley since the late 1970s, he said. "In one form or another, I have operated businesses on this corner for close to 30 years ... I have a big investment in Holley and this project will definitely infringe on my business operation." more

The Town of Riga Recreation and Community Events Department and the Churchville Lions Club invite the community to celebrate winter with Winter-Fest 2003 Sunday, February 9, at the Churchville Elementary School from 1 to 4 p.m. more

Saturday 'Organic Fitness' exercise class offered
An Organic Fitness exercise class will be offered by Spencerport Continuing Education. Fifteen classes will be held on Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m. beginning February 15. The fee for the class, which is code S052-5, is $20 for residents of the Spencerport School District, $23 for non-residents and $17 for resident senior citizens. The instructor will be Teresa Fiermonte. more

United Way of Eastern Orleans honors volunteers and donors
United Way of Eastern Orleans held its annual meeting January 27 to elect officers and members to the Board of Directors and to recognize companies supporting the United Way/Red Cross Campaign. In addition to the election of board members, local companies were presented awards in recognition of their support of the United Way/Red Cross Campaign. more

Book sale donations accepted
The Friends of the Chili Public Library plan a used book sale for March 20, 21 and 22. This event is a major fundraiser to benefit the library and donations of books, videos and DVDs, music tapes and CDs, as well as computer software are needed. Large print books are in demand, but no magazines can be accepted. more

Gates Lions distribute Liberty Day booklets
Lions Clubs International created a special project called Liberty Day a number of years ago. Liberty Day began as a way to teach students about the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution and in the fall of 2000, both houses of the U.S. Congress recognized Liberty Day in a Resolution -- making it a national, annual celebration. more

Public information meeting on new Ogden highway facility Feb. 5
A public information meeting will be held Wednesday, February 5 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the Ogden Community Center regarding a new highway facility. Information will be provided concerning the site of the structure, which will be to the south of the existing community center. In addition residents will have the opportunity to view a rendering of the building, as well as floor plans of the garage, maintenance area and office complex. more

On December 30, at the Hamlin Town Hall, Charles Hungerford was awarded the Extra Mile award. This award is designed to recognize Hamlin residents who have shown an act of kindness, done a good deed, or gone the extra mile. more

John critical of governor's proposed financial aid cut
Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester/Chili//Wheatland/Rush/Riga) has criticized a report that the governor will propose slashing financial aid for New York college students by as much as 50 percent. more

New Executive Director to lead Monroe County Dem Committee
Irondequoit native Andrea Guzzetta has been appointed executive director for the Monroe County Democratic Party, according to Democratic Committee Chair Molly Clifford. more

Spencerport School Board begins 2003-04 budget development
The Spencerport School Board began reviewing each section of the budget as part of the development of the 2003-04 budget proposal at the January 28 board meeting. In developing the proposal, the board will take into account the recommendations of the Budget Advisory Committee, which consists of community residents and district employees, according to school officials. more

One Brockport High School Music Department student and two alternates were chosen to participate in the NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Conference All State ensembles this year. more

Bright Raven Gymnasts bring home team banners
Bright Raven gymnasts traveled to Utica to compete in the Leatherstocking Invitational, January 10-11, winning three team banners and many individual awards. The Level 5 team took first place with a team total of 179.80. more

Clark leads Brockport in Women's Basketball win
Senior forward Kristen Clark (Hilton/Hilton) scored 29 points in Brockport's 77-54 win over SUNY Fredonia. With the win, Brockport remains undefeated in the SUNYAC improving to 5-0, 11-3 overall. Fredonia falls to 7-9, 3-5 in the conference. more

First win for Brockport gymnasts
The Golden Eagles, the SUNY Brockport gymnastic team, defeated Ithaca College, Saturday, January 25. Sophomore Jordan Christiano (Hilton/Hilton) won the all-around and the floor to lead Brockport to a 178.125 to 175.275 victory. more

Hilton's Dan Lucas on boxing card
"It'll be my first boxing match ever," said Dan Lucas about his upcoming heavyweight match as part of the seven-fight card at the Blue Cross Arena March 6. The feature match of the evening pits Rochester residents Robert "Push-up" Frazier against Charles "The Natural" Murray. more

Holley's Ezell leads Golden Eagles
Freshman Adam Ezell (Holley) won his 165 lb. match 10-2 as the Brockport Golden Eagles defeated Oswego 39-3 in college wrestling. The Golden Eagles have seven wrestlers ranked nationally and the team is ranked third behind Wartburg College (Iowa) and Augsburg College (Minnesota). more
