Collaborative effort creates support center
Spencerport school district opened The Family Support Center April 10. A collaborative effort to provide support services to district families, the center was made possible with a $400,000 federal grant, one of the eight awarded nationwide. The community partners include the Town of Ogden and the Village of Spencerport, who helped the district secure the grant. more

Farmworkers, allies march for equal rights
Farmworkers, students, union members, and clergy from all over western New York will join forces in a ten-day march to Albany beginning in Seneca Falls on April 21. They'll be wearing red T-shirts emblazoned with the message: New York's farmworkers deserve equal rights. more

Free electric bulbs save energy
Spencerport Municipal Electric has teamed up with Independent Energy Efficiency Program, Inc. Together they've come up with a bright idea to help customers save money on their electric bills. Since April 7, electric customers have been able to bring in their electric bill to Ritchie Family Hardware and receive two free Energy Star labeled compact fluorescent bulbs at no charge. more

Genesee Valley Greenway work day set for April 26
The Genesee Valley Greenway will be full of activity on Saturday, April 26, as volunteers undertake a variety of projects in Chili, Caledonia, York, and Nunda. more

Ice stressed trees require care
The ice storm of April 2003 brought power outages, damaged trees, and cleanup. The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County offers the following tips. Think safety first. Do not attempt to remove large branches on your own or go in the vicinity of trees that may be dropping more branches or may be in contact with power lines. more

Needs of children remain the same,
retiring nursery school teacher says

"I hear that there are college students still able to sing all (verses) of Old Mrs. Witch," says Sylvia McManis, referring to a favorite Halloween song she taught her students. Actually, there are also parents out there who also know all the verses - especially if they had several children attend Countryside Nursery School in Spencerport. more

Parking ticket 'dodgers' in Brockport have until April 30 to pay up
Under a recently approved measure, Village of Brockport trustees unanimously carried a motion authorizing an "amnesty period" for individuals with unpaid parking tickets. The amnesty period ends April 30. more

Pennies support child care
Representatives from Buckmans Car Wash presented a check in the amount of $938.88 to Lakeside Child Care from proceeds raised through their "Penny Power" project. This amount was collected during the last quarter of 2002, in addition to the $4,051 donated last summer. more

Spencerport CROP Walk Against Hunger set for May 4
Come rain or shine, many area residents are gearing up to join in the 2003 Spencerport Crop Walk, on Sunday, May 4. Registration and the walk will begin between 1 and 2 p.m. The 10 kilometer walk will begin and end at the Spencerport United Methodist Church on Amity Street and will follow the towpath to Adams Basin and back. A one mile walk for families or seniors is also offered. more

Unique Last Supper depiction created by local crafter
On Thursday, April 17, Christians will commemorate the Last Supper, the traditional Passover meal that Jesus shared with his disciples. The Last Supper has inspired artists throughout the centuries who have depicted it in paintings, stained glass, and needlework. An impressive and unique rendition of the Last Supper makes its home in Brockport. more

Local poet honored
Teacher and Poet M.J. Iuppa of Hamlin was honored by the Monroe County Legislature for her contributions to the community. Iuppa is the Writer-in-Residence at St. John Fisher College. She has published more than 200 poems in magazines and books throughout the United States and Europe. more

The Parma-Hilton Historical Society will host a panel of long-time area residents responding to questions of 'OLDEN DAYS,' following a short business meeting on April 21. more

Plans presented for North Chili intersection
at Routes 33 and 259 reconstruction

The New York State Department of Transportation will host a public meeting in North Chili to present plans to reconstruct the intersection of Route 33 (Buffalo Road) and Route 259 (Union Street) to the community. more

Toy show rescheduled due to ice storm
The Spencerport Sports Booster Club will host their 3rd Annual "Toys For Sports" fundraiser on Saturday, May 3 at the Taylor Elementary School in Spencerport. A Toy Show will open at 9 a.m. and run until 3 p.m. Admission is $1 for adults, children 12 and under are free. more

Two positions open on Hilton Board of Education
The three-year terms of current Hilton School District Board of Education members Dan Wellington, vice-president, and Gary Comardo will expire this year. The two positions on Hilton's seven-member board will be up for election this May 20 at the annual Budget Vote and Board Election. more

An ABC Quilts Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 at the United Methodist Church of North Chili, 2200 Westside Drive on Buffalo Road from 9 a.m. to noon. more

BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education Center (CTE) students Maria Ramos and Mike Alonci in Rick Gage's TV/Radio Broadcasting class videotaped BOCES 2 programs in the nine component districts and created a video, BOCES 2 Part of the Solution, which aired at the BOCES 2 annual meeting April 2. more

BOCES 2 student places first
BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education Center student Matt Elkins recently presented his speech "My Success at WE-MO-CO" to fellow VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) students, teachers and WAC (Work Activities Center) students at WE-MO-CO. The speech was about his educational experiences at BOCES 2 and his recent win at the New York State Skills/USA VICA competition. more

Marie Barron, Churchville-Chili Junior High library media specialist, was chosen as New York State's Lottery Educator of the Week for the week of March 31. A profile of Barron at work with students was featured as part of the 5 p.m. newscast on WOKR Channel 13 throughout the week of March 31. more

C-C Odyssey of the Mind team headed for competition
A Churchville-Chili Intermediate Odyssey of the Mind team will compete in the Odyssey of the Mind World Competition to be held in Ames, Iowa in May on the campus of Iowa State University. The students are sixth-graders Steven Brown, Tom Loughlin, Ellen Sadri, Megan Specksgoor, Sean Tanner, Tres Heffron and Kelby Weilnau. more

The Greece Teachers Association has presented its Fourth Annual Golden Apple Teacher of the Year. more

Holocaust Photo Exhibit travels to C-C schools
A traveling exhibit from Monroe Community College (MCC) gave Churchville-Chili Junior and Senior High School students an opportunity to learn about the Holocaust and World War II. "The goal of the Holocaust/Genocide studies program at MCC is to educate the community about the tragedy of this time in our history. more

Roberts Wesleyan winners headed to nationals
The Roberts Wesleyan College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) recently placed first in their league at the SIFE Regional Competition and Career Opportunity Fair. The team has qualified to compete in the national competition May 11-13 in Kansas City. more

A Social Studies Festival at Munn Elementary School in Spencerport transformed the school gym and gave students a multi-disciplinary learning experience. more

WE-MO-CO student wins art award
Greg Sandera, a junior at WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center in Spencerport received second place in the 2003 International Aviation Art Contest sponsored by the New York State Department of Transportation. He received a framed copy of his artwork and a framed certificate. more

The Varsity Club at Brockport High School sponsors their annual Senior Citizen Prom at the high school cafeteria, 40 Allen Street, Brockport, on Saturday evening, April 26, from 7 until 9 p.m. Last year over 125 seniors listened to music and danced with Varsity Club members. more

Spencerport Westside Soccer wins
The Spencerport Westside Soccer Team won the Men's Open Indoor Soccer League on March 26 at the Rochester Sports Garden. Westside beat Webster American Soccer Club, 7-6 in four overtimes in the finals. more

Tri-County PeeWee team wins Year End Classic
The Tri-County PeeWee Tier III Travel Team defeated the North Virginia Ice Dawgs 4-3 on St. Patrick's Day weekend to capture the Pittsburgh 2003 Year End Classic. The winning goal was scored by Brandon Miner with 5:02 minutes remaining in the third period. more
