Brockport third grader wins fire truck ride
In the second annual coloring contest sponsored by FUSE, Mackenzie Northrup received her first place ribbon from Assistant Chief Michael J. Henry of the Brockport Fire Department and Past Chief Charlie Hungerford, Walker Fire Department, who represented Firefighters United for Safety Education (FUSE) after giving her a ride to school on a fire truck. more

Cherry production up
According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York office, 2007 tart cherry production is forecast at 13.0 million pounds. This forecast is 25 percent above last year's production of 10.4 million pounds and 73 percent above the 2005 crop. Despite a few reports of dry conditions, growers are experiencing an average to above average crop. The crop does not appear to be as heavy as some growers were predicting. The Lake Ontario fruit region and central part of the state have both generally reported a good crop so far. more

Registration opens July 9 for Deb Coller's Puzzle Piece Pin craft program to be held Tuesday, July 17. Choose either the 10 a.m. program or the 11 a.m. This is for ages 4-12. Registration opens the same day for the earrings craft with Deb Coller. This program will be held Tuesday, July 17 at 1 p.m. and is for those ages 10-18. more

Summer musical theatre training for students takes the stage
Hilton Parma Recreation is offering encore musical theatre camps this summer for students in grades 3 through 12. Kathleen Sereika, a BFA musical theater major who has toured the nation with The Children's Theater, will be the primary instructor. She will be accompanied by two other SUNY Fredonia musical theater majors, Sanford Holsapple and Caitlyn Herzlinger, forming the group P.U.R.E. Creativity. more

Cornell Cooperative Extension's gala raises $10,000
The Cornell Cooperative Extension's Friends of Extension Gala brought together program participants and volunteers who support Extension's broad educational reach within the community. Farmers, horticulture businesses, 4-H volunteers, Master Gardeners, consumers and community partners contributed auction items for an event that featured food, New York state wine, and a silent and a live auction. more

New fund aims to meet rising needs
Most people are familiar with The Salvation Army's holiday bell-ringing fundraising. However, the need for assistance in Rochester is growing to such levels that the current fundraising programs are no longer sufficient. more

Sweden Senior Center is first in county to receive accreditation
The Sweden Senior Center, located at 133 State Street in Brockport, has become the only accredited senior center in Monroe County. It is among only 10 such centers in New York state and 130 nationally to receive accreditation. more

Hilton players make it to All-Star game
The Eddie Meath Senior All-Star Football game will be Sunday, July 1 at PAETEC Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. On Friday, June 29, the Annual Eddie Meath All-Star Banquet will be held to honor the six Section V Coaches of the Year and game uniforms being presented to the Eddie Meath All-Star players, cheerleaders and coaches. more

Upstate Lakers captures consolation title
