Root Road, Sweden, residents want yard cleaned up
Root Road residents appeared before the Sweden Town Board on January 23 to ask the town to enforce its junk, abandoned vehicles, and open burning ordinances against the owners of 575 Root Road. more

Spencerport Area C of C makes annual awards
The Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce has named Tom Friedo the Clyde W. Carter Citizen of the Year, honored Ginny Swarthout with the Civic Beautification award, and named Hi-Qual Heating and Cooling, Inc. owners Bill Hill and Bob Quataert Business People of the Year for the year 2000. more

Spencerport Electric seeks increase in municipal rate
Spencerport Municipal Electric is seeking a 10 percent increase in electric rates, the first rate hike in 12 years, and all consumers are invited to a public information meeting Wednesday, January 31, at 7 p.m. at the Spencerport Fire Hall at 175 Lyell Ave. more

Spencerport Lions have a busy holiday season
The Spencerport Lions have completed one of the busiest holiday seasons this year, according to members. At Christmas on the Canal, club members provided hot drinks and other food items. At Breakfast With Santa, they provided a good breakfast, toys for the children, and a visit with Santa. Free pictures are being sent to the parents as a keepsake. The money derived from these two events has been donated to the Cartons for Christmas program. more

2000 Monroe County Firemen's Association Essay Contest
The year 2000 was the thirty-fifth year the Monroe County Volunteer Firemen's Association has sponsored a Fire Safety (Fire Prevention) Essay Contest. The essay subject for 2000 was Carbon Monoxide Detectors. Of the five schools in the Brockport area, four decided to participate when approached by Captain Mark Warner, the local representative. more

CC sixth-grader wins local International Peace Poster Contest
Douglass Bish, a sixth-grade student at Churchville-Chili Middle School, is the Churchville winner of the Lions Club Peace Poster Contest, qualifying him to compete for the international grand prize. Douglass' winning entry now advances to round two district competition, where his entry will compete with other area winners. Douglass' entry is among more than 325,000 entries worldwide. more

GCC offers computer seminars
Area residents interested in learning more about the internal workings of computers are invited to join Genesee Community College's "Understanding Computers" workshop at the Orleans Campus Center, Mondays, February 5 to March 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. The workshop will also be offered at the Batavia Campus, Saturdays, February 10 to March 10, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. more

Prints and paintings by Brian H. Jones
on exhibit at SUNY College at Brockport
The SUNY Brockport Department of Art welcomes the outstanding, emotionally-charged exhibit by Brian H. Jones, professor of fine arts at Indiana University Southeast. The Jones exhibit includes several of his recent prints and paintings, and will be on display in the Tower Fine Arts Gallery, Holley Street, January 26 through February 10. more

Spencerport student receives 'Do the Right Thing,' award
Spencerport High School student Felicia King has received the Rochester Police Department's "Do the Right Thing" award. The award ceremony took place January 11 at the Rochester Public Safety Building. Police Chief Robert Duffy and Mayor William Johnson presented the award to Felicia and four other area students. more

SUNY Brockport to offer information technology certificate program
SUNY College at Brockport, in collaboration with Element K Learning Center (formerly Ziff-Davis Education Center), continues to offer a certificate program designed to provide individuals with the skills necessary to gain entry-level employment in the information technology (IT) profession. Classes begin every month. more

Blue Devils Icemen win two
The Brockport Blue Devils hockey team defeated Penfield and Churchville-Chili by identical 4-1 scores to take sole possession of second place as the regular season winds down. more

Blue Devils sweep Penfield
The Brockport Blue Devils girls varsity volleyball team played their final home match of the regular season on Senior Day and swept Penfield 15-5, 15-5, 15-0 January 20. The game also marked the final regular season home match for 22-year coach Mary Lou Blodgett. more

Boley named Athlete of Week
Mahnseah Boley was named Niagara County Community College Athlete of the Week for January 8. more

Hilton Cadets Raise Funds For Special Olympics
Hot Shots - Hilton varsity players Amanda Eichas and Garaeth Lenhard and J.V. players Brian Eichas and Melissa Haight were winners of a free throw contest organized by the Hilton Girl's Basketball Team for half-time on the Hy Burritt Tournament. more

Winners of free-throw contest announced
St. Leo's Knights of Columbus recently completed the local competition for a state-sponsored basketball free-throw shooting contest. Boys and girls, 81 total, ages 10-14 competed against each other and were asked to attempt 15 free-throws, with the person scoring the greatest number advancing to the next level of competition at St. Jude's Church. more
