Lakeside Beikirch employee receives statewide honors
Karen Burr, R.N., will be honored June 25 for receiving the Long Term Care Employee of Distinction Award given by the New York Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. This award was given in the eight districts of New York state. more

Parma Public Library adds two local authors to collection
The Parma Public Library has added two new authors to its local author collection. A Shot at Redemption by Hilton resident and Quest school teacher Christine Mulcahy, is a mystery featuring the Reverend Jack McHeffey. The Reverend is found shot in his church and awakens with no memory of the incident. The unfolding mystery parallels the Reverend's emotional unfolding where we must face the fact that he is the source of his own pain. more

Summer fun begins at Newman Riga Library July 2
Summer fun begins at the Newman Riga Library Monday, July 2. "Hit the Books" reading program sponsored by the Buffalo Bills and UPS kicks off for children in grade levels 2 through 12. For every book read during the month of July, the participant will be allowed to fill out a scorecard and deposit it at the library for a chance to win a ticket to the Buffalo Bills-Seattle Seahawks game in Buffalo. more

Young inventors' work recognized
Rob and Sean Tanner entered the 2001 Rochester Invention Convention. The mission of the convention is to encourage science education for young people. Each NYS region conducts its own regional Invention Convention through judging invention disclosure forms. The disclosure form must include the problem, solution and a drawing of the invention. Once all disclosures are submitted, 80 students are selected to build a model of their invention and display it at the Rochester regional ceremony which was held on May 19. more

Brockport Mayor Mary Ann Thorpe has appointed eight members to a committee that will help review applications in the search for a new police chief. The chief’s position will be advertised once the wording of the job description has been approved by civil service. more

Carillon summer recital series begins July 9 at UR
Two carillonneurs from Yale University will inaugurate this year's Hopeman Memorial Carillon Summer Recital Series at the University of Rochester. more

A newly formed group will monitor proposed projects in South Chili, including the NYS Thruway Exit and the soccer complex. more

The Town of Greece has been updating its Master Plan and will hold a Public Review and Comment Session at a spe-cial Town Board meeting on June 27 at 7 p.m. in the Board Meeting Room, Greece Town Hall on Long Pond Road. more

Learn About Letchworth series to be presented
The Arts Council for Wyoming County has received a mini-grant from the New York Council for the Humanities, made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities, to produce this year's Learn About Letchworth series, Canal Crossings: The Erie Meets the Genesee Valley. The Learn About Letchworth series will take place at the Lower Falls Restaurant, Letchworth State Park, each Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in July and August, beginning July 10 and is free to all. more

NYS Senate confirms O'Flynn as MC Sheriff
The New York State Senate confirmed the appointment of Patrick M. O'Flynn as Sheriff of Monroe County to fill the vacancy created by departing Sheriff Andrew P. Meloni's retirement on May 31, 2001. The appointment was made by Governor George Pataki. more

Racers Taking the Green for the Ronald McDonald House
On Sunday, April 22, a fundraiser was held for the Ronald McDonald House at the Bergen Fire Hall on Route 19 in Bergen. Over 50 local race teams participated in the event and raised over $6,000 for the Ronald McDonald House of Rochester. This was the second annual event and the money raised this year was triple the amount from the first year. more

Route 33 in Bergen being resurfaced
NYSDOT maintenance workers have begun a highway project to resurface 3.7 miles of Route 33 between West Bergen Road and Route 19 in the Town of Bergen, Genesee County. Motorists should allow extra time to pass through the highway work zone. more

Seymour Library announces first artist in residence
The Seymour Library Board of Trustees has chosen local artist Jappie King Black to be the first Artist in Residence. She will be creating a sculpture on the library side lawn. more

Thorpe loses re-election bid
Brockport Mayor Mary Ann Thorpe has lost her bid for a third term as mayor to Josephine Matela by a vote of 556 to 502. more

Tuesdays with Seymour begin July 10
The Seymour Library has announced the line-up for its third annual Great Lawn Summer Concerts. The concert series features community bands to play for local and visitors alike on Tuesday evenings on the east lawn at the library. more

Weber, Hare resign Brockport posts
Brockport Building Inspector/Assessor Bill Weber has resigned from his position effective next month. A 24-year village employee, Weber has accepted a position with Ontrac Equipment. more

Area juniors to attend Empire Girl's State Sessions
Two Churchville-Chili juniors and one Spencerport junior have been chosen by units of the American Legion Auxiliary to attend the 51st Mythical State of the Empire Girls State program to be held the week of June 24-June 30 at Russell Sage College, in Troy. more

Assistant superintendent appointed at BOCES 2
Dr. Pamela W. Kissel was appointed Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Support at Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES. Dr. Kissel is presently principal of Penfield High School. She is expected to begin her new duties at BOCES 2 in mid-August. more

Brockport elementary students become "world travelers"
Ever wonder what it would be like to travel the world without having to pay for an airline ticket? In a sense, students at the Barclay Elementary School in Brockport did just that. With just the cost of postage, the students' virtual journeys were underway. The students went all over the world - vicariously - using paper dolls to do the traveling for them. more

Brockport High School Band members receive awards
At the annual Brockport High School Band Banquet, June 10 in the SUNY Brockport Ballroom, band members received individual recognition for their participation in band. The 30 graduating seniors in the band were cited for their accomplishments. more

C-C student awarded MCC scholars scholarship
Churchville-Chili Senior High School student Anna Marshall has been awarded the MCC Scholars Program scholarship. She is one of eleven recipients, chosen from 90 applications from 30 schools. more

Genesee Center for the Arts offers season tickets
The Genesee Center for the Arts will offer season tickets for its 2001-2002 season, which begins October 4. Subscribers will also receive an additional complimentary ticket of equal value to any Forum Player or Fine Arts event throughout the season. more

Hill School staff raises nearly $3,000 for cancer research
Third-grade teacher Tammy Zaffuto knows first hand how devastating it is to lose a loved one to cancer. She lost her mother to ovarian cancer eight years ago. That is why she and her family have participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life every year for the past four years. This year, Zaffuto decided to organize a relay team of her own with her fellow staff members at Brockport's Hill Elementary School. more

Ever wonder what home schooled children actually do? Joyce Stewart of Churchville submitted this photo of her daughter, Samantha Stewart, with her end of year home-school project, called a Tetrahed. Samantha built this Tetrahed to prove that it is the shape of an object, not what it is made of that makes it strong. more

Kendall Elementary raises over $7,000 for American Heart Association
Kendall Elementary School received a letter of thanks from the American Heart Association (AHA) for the $7,700 its students raised during the annual Jump Rope for Heart. Every student in grades 2-6 participated in the program as part of a fitness unit in physical education class and had the option of also collecting pledges. more

Spencerport High School student receives Chamber of Commerce award
Spencerport High School student Rachel Brongo has received the Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce scholarship. Rachel will receive the $500 after completing her first semester of college and registering for the second semester. more

Spencerport students and staff raise money for charity
Students and staff at Bernabi Elementary School in Spencerport have raised $1,742 for the American Cancer Society. The staff held a breakfast during which they collected $310 in one morning. more

U14 Boys Jr. Rhinos win State Cup, bound for Germany
It has been a dizzying month for the U14 boys Jr. Rhinos soccer team, which is currently ranked #1 in the United States. Over Memorial Day weekend, they were the champions at the U.S. National Nike Premier Cup outside Philadelphia, where 24 of the top U14 teams from throughout the nation were invited to play. They defeated nationally ranked Middletown (New Jersey) and F.C. Delco (Philadelphia) on penalty kicks and Lou Fusz (St. Louis) in the finals (2-1). more
