Anti-soccer complex rally draws nearly 100 residents

BISCO funds skate park
A skate park for Sweden-area youth is a lot closer to reality after BISCO donated $20,000 to the project last week. The donation makes possible the paving of the skate facility, which will be located at Sweden’s new Redman Road park. Paving should occur during the next few weeks, before asphalt plants shut down for the season, Sweden Supervisor Buddy Lester said. more

Brockport to begin police chief interviews
The Village of Brockport expects to interview five candidates for chief of police during the next two weeks. The candidates include four officers from other Monroe County police agencies and Acting Brockport Police Chief Doug Ziegler. Whoever is selected will have to take and pass the Civil Service Police Chief Examination in March. more

Churchville passes noise ordinance
The Churchville Village Broad unanimously passed an amended noise ordinance October 1 following a public hearing attended by six residents and a representative from the Monroe County Sheriffs Department. more

Court will decide whether Brockport's police chief deal becomes public
When former Brockport Police Chief Gary Zimmer was reinstated on May 17 after a three-month administrative leave, the deal struck between him and the village regarding his subsequent retirement was sealed as a personnel record. Since that time, several entities have filed Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests pertaining to the related documents. more

Family's tradition a patriotic one of military service
The Cappetta family of Spencerport has been involved in the military since 1940. Sal (Salvatore) Cappetta, a disabled American Veteran who served two tours in Viet Nam, said that the military has always been important to his family. His father and two brothers both served in the armed forces, Sal was a Marine and then joined the National Guard, and his three children are all in the National Guard. "This family's a bit patriotic," he said. "The whole family has a sense of duty and purpose. This country's been great for everyone; (we want to) ... give something back." more

Razing of Brockport's Oxford Street houses imminent
Following the acceptance last week of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Village of Brockport and the 3M Company, five houses on Oxford Street will be razed later this month. more

Riga Landfill operations to be leased
Monroe County has entered an agreement to lease day-to-day operations of the county's Mill Seat Landfill in Riga. Through a competitive process, Waste Management was selected to operate the facility and to construct the remaining phases of the landfill. Monroe County will retain oversight and monitoring authority over the entire Mill Seat site and operation. more

Rochester resident raises guide dog puppy
to become blind student's guiding eyes
Rochester resident Ron Schulz, a volunteer puppy raiser for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, has just seen his second puppy graduate to a full-fledged guide dog. Bucky, a black male Labrador Retriever, has been with Schulz since he was just 10 weeks old. Now full grown, Bucky has become the gift of independence to Amanda Dobner of Wauconda, Illinois, who has been blind since birth. more

UR and Wegmans team to host flu shot clinics
Flu shot clinics will begin October 3 throughout Monroe County, but shots will initially be administered only to residents aged 65 and older or high-risk individuals. In addition, pneumococcal vaccine will be offered at most community clinics to further protect residents from severe complications from the flu. Residents may call 274-6189 for the locations of flu shot clinics in Monroe County. more

Winter heating costs should be lower
Natural gas heating customers of Rochester Gas and Electric Corp (RG&E) could pay about 19 percent less to heat their homes this winter than they did last year - if the weather is the same, according to RG&E officials. more

Writing to the troops
Individuals and families all across the nation - in schools, and churches, with campus groups, youth organizations, veterans groups and auxiliaries, and many other kinds of groups (including on military bases), are already writing fan mail to American troops at home and abroad for the Christmas 2001 Military Mail campaign. more

AARP Driver Safety Program offered
To reduce auto insurance premiums by nearly 10 percent, drivers take the AARP Drivers Safety Program - a community service course sponsored by the AARP Northwest Chapter. In addition, four points, from violations, can be forgiven with successful completion of the course. Drivers or their spouses should be 50 years old or older. Preregistration is required. more

Brockport band to travel to Kentucky
The Brockport High School Band will travel to Kentucky May 1 through 4 to perform in the Pegasus Parade and the Kentucky Music Festival. Traditionally, the band travels to a national music festival every other spring. more

Final month for Ogden brush pick ups
The Ogden Highway Department is in the last month of brush pickup that ends October 26. At that time, a final sweep will ensure debris will not winter over at roadside. more

Free star party offered to public
Members of the Rochester Academy of Science astronomy club invite people of all ages to Northampton Park to view deep sky objects through members' telescopes on Wednesday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m. See galaxies, star clusters, and gaseous nebulae. The viewing will be held near the ski lodge on Hubbell Road. more

Hilton expects to approve capital project vote
The Hilton School District Board of Education is expected to approve a Capital Project bond vote to be presented to district residents for their approval on December 4. The approval vote follows a year of planning by the board's Long Range Planning Committee, a group of teachers, administrators, parents and community members, which worked with two consultants to develop the set of school building additions, renovations and technology requirements. Those consultants were The Thomas Group, Inc. of Ithaca and Christa Construction, Inc. of Victor. more

Hilton-Parma Recreation plans Toronto trip
A limited number of tickets have been obtained by Hilton-Parma Recreation for a one-day trip on Saturday, February 9, 2002 to see the musical "Mamma Mia" in Toronto. This upbeat and uplifting musical is an original romantic comedy woven around a succession of ABBA songs from the 1970s and 80s including Dancing Queen, I Have a Dream, Knowing Me, Knowing You and Mamma Mia. This musical is being performed at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto. more

Monroe County to hold vehicle auction
Monroe County's Surplus Vehicle and Equipment Auction will be held this Saturday, October 6. Through the coop-erative efforts of 50 municipalities and 20 local businesses, the county will auction heavy equipment, tools, cars and trucks beginning at 9 a.m. at the Gates-Chili- Ogden Facility (GCO), 145 Paul Road off Scottsville Road. more

The Town of Ogden is forming an advisory committee to work on a five year master plan for the Department of Parks & Recreation. more

Residents urged to practice E.D.I.T.H.
The Spencerport Fire Department is again sponsoring a community-wide Exit Drill In The Home during Fire Prevention Week. This life-saving exercise, commonly referred to as "E.D.I.T.H.," will be conducted in partnership with fire departments throughout Monroe County on Wednesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. All residents are encouraged to participate in this activity which has saved lives throughout the nation. more

Winter coats collected for Clothing Closet
The MOMS (Moms Offering Moms Support) Club of Hilton is sponsoring a Winter Coat Drive to benefit the Hilton/Parma Community Center Cloth-ing Closet. Participants can drop off used coats at the Big M Supermarket in the Village Plaza in Hilton or the Parma Library, West Avenue in Hilton. The coat drive runs from October 8 through November 5. Hats, gloves and other winter apparel for children or adults will also be accepted. more

Brockport School District supports new bomb threat law
In the wake of the September 11 terrorist acts, the New York Legislature approved a new law that will substantially change the penalty for falsely reporting a bomb threat in schools. Under the new law, the penalty for reporting a false bomb threat has been increased to a Class D felony, which means that anyone convicted of calling a bomb threat to a public school could be imprisoned for up to seven years. more

Hilton-Parma Seniors plan day trip
Plans have been made for the Hilton-Parma Senior Citizens to travel to the Hearthstone Manor in Buffalo on Wednesday, November 14 for a performance by Al Martino, known for hits such as "Spanish Eyes," "Here In My Heart," "Mary in the Morning," "Tears and Roses" and "Can't Help Falling in Love." Also included in this trip is a sit-down luncheon at the Hearthstone Manor. more

Sweden Senior Center announces new web site
Sweden Senior Center, a nutrition and activity center for seniors over the age of 60, has announced the launching of its new website. The staff at the Senior Center views the site as another tool in their efforts to improve and expand communications with Seniors and the community. more

Adult twirlers take first place
The 10th Annual New York State Twirlers Hall of Fame competition was held in Utica on Saturday, August 18. The contest also featured a Masters Division for "retired" twirlers age 21 and over. Hilton-Parma Recreation's adult twirling class "Mayne's Mature Majorettes" was awarded the first place trophy. The winning routine was choreographed to the song "Disco Inferno" from the hit movie "Saturday Night Fever." more

Apple Derby shines on runners
Ideal weather conditions on Saturday, September 29 welcomed 110 runners who competed in the 23rd Annual Apple Derby/Merkel 5 Mile Run held in conjunction with Hilton Apple Fest weekend. more

Hilton High School Athletic Hall of Fame seeks nominations
The Hilton High School Athletic Hall of Fame is seeking nominations of former Hilton athletes or coaches who have made outstanding contributions to the Hilton athletic program according to Athletic Hall of Fame Committee member Michael Whelehan. more

Hilton-Parma Recreation Ski Program set
Hilton-Parma Recreation has scheduled the Sr. High ski program for the 2001 season. Ski programs are open to students residing in the Hilton School District and/or Town of Parma. more

Kendall sweeps homecoming
The Kendall Eagles swept a pair of Homecoming soccer games September 29 as the girls defeated Elba 3-0 and the boys followed suit with a 4-1 whitewash of the School of The Arts. Between games, the Kendall soccer field was officially dedicated and named Jurhs Field after Vic Jurhs. The Jurhs family farm was formerly on the property on which the soccer field is now and he was a part of the first varsity soccer team in the school's history. more

Rangers netters win two
The rankings for Section Five boys volleyball aren't out yet, but you can be sure Spencerport will be ranked at or near the top after defeating two strong teams in Brockport and Churchville-Chili within six days. more

Saints Patalano scores two
Junior Joanna Patalano scored a goal in each half - her first two of the season - to pace the Churchville-Chili Saints to a 3-1 victory over Brockport September 28. more
