Amish quilts featured at Parma Museum Show
Amish quilts will hold the spotlight at the spring program of the Parma Meetinghouse Museum, May 4 and 5 at 460 Parma Center Road. The quilt show will be held both days from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., with talks each day at 2 p.m. by Parma Town Historian Shirley Cox Husted relating her experiences in working with residents of an Amish community near Gowanda. more

Brockport's Christ Community Church announces new senior pastor
Christ Community Church as installed Rev. Bruce Plummer as its new senior pastor. At the same time, the Rev. John Benedetti, senior pastor for the last 25 years, is remaining with the church, but will move full-time into his developing international ministry. The installation service will be held Saturday, April 20 at 6 p.m. at the church. The church, with a membership of approximately 450, is located at 36 Coleman Creek Road in Brockport. more

C-C Board of Education adopts budget proposal
The Churchville-Chili Board of Education has adopted a proposed budget of $50,964,764 for the 2002-2003 school year. The year-to-year increase in expenditures is 3.99 percent. In developing the budget, the Board of Education considered input from administrators, faculty, staff and district residents, according to district representatives. more

Church celebrates 125th anniversary
with historic commemorative worship service
Church of the Epiphany, 3285 Buffalo Road, Gates, will host a commemorative worship service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, as part of its 125th anniversary celebration. The order of service will follow that which was used in 1876. This re-enactment of a service based on the 1789 Book of Common Prayer will be presided over by the Right Rev. Jack M. McKelvey, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester. The guest preacher will be the Rev. Dr. Robert Page, retired seminary professor and former Epiphany interim rector. more

Village of Brockport residents gathered at Seymour Library April 4 to listen to clean up plans that were outlined for two contaminated former industrial sites on State Street. more

Hilton to hold tax rate same for 11th straight year
For the eleventh straight year, Hilton residents will see no increase in the village tax rate. The village board adopted a $2,045,730 budget that is 10.7 percent higher than last year, but does not alter the tax rate of $2.32 per thousand of assessed valuation. more

Kendall church celebrates a restored treasure
In the year 1912, Concordia Lutheran Church in Kendall purchased a two manual Morey pipe organ at a cost of $1,000, no small sum at that time. In recent years, after accompanying that congregation in countless hymns, the organ was sounding old and tired and parishioners decided something had to be done. Concordia found itself in the position of having to decide whether to restore their pipe organ, or replace it with a new electronic model. more

Music for Aimee concert raises funds for accident victim
On Sunday, April 28, local recording artist Josie Waverly, along with several other local bands, will be holding a benefit concert at Josie's Country Jukebox, 5435 West Ridge Road, Spencerport. The concert, entitled Music for Aimee, will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. more

North Chili intersection redesign raises some parking concerns
The New York State Department of Transportation is designing the reconstruction of the intersection of Route 259 and Route 33 in North Chili. The plan involves the area on Union Street (Rt. 259) between Berry Lane (north) and the firehouse (south) and the area on Buffalo Road from Attridge Road (west) to Orchard Street (east). It involves signaling changes, lane additions and sidewalks. more

Spencerport schools looking at tax rate hike
Rising health insurance costs, changes in the way the state allots building aid and almost half a million dollar decrease in state aid will be contributing to a seven to nine percent tax levy increase for taxpayers in the Spencerport School District. more

Tax assessment reduction approved for Seldon Square project
By a vote of three to two, a 35 percent tax reduction was granted for the Seldon Square Park Phase II project in the Town of Clarkson. more

An elementary school will grow here
In ceremonies April 6, Spencerport school officials, Board of Education members and district residents joined together to break ground for a new elementary school. The students served as representatives for the district's three elementary schools, the middle school and the high school. more

Career and Tech Center director retires after 19 years
Gerald Hochreiter, director of the WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center for the past 19 years, retired April 5. Hochreiter started at Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Career and Technical Education Department in 1983 as director. He spent a total of 33 years working in career and technical education for the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). more

Science Fair taps student curiosity
Hilton's Village Elementary School Annual Science Fair, held April 5, attracted more than 160 student participants whose exhibits ranged from chemistry and electronics to the study of ocean life, crystals, tarantulas, and human physiology. more

Terry Taylor Elementary School sixth-grade teacher Andrea Page was chosen as Channel 8's Teacher of the Month, thanks to the nomination by three of Page's students, Gabriella MacDonald, Gina Dandrea and Kaitlin Anderson. more

A community of caring project implemented by the Spencerport school system as part of the New York State Department of Education’s Character Education initiatives has grown to a much larger scale. more

become detectives for a day

Sixth-grade students in Spencerport's Taylor Elementary School became sleuths during the school's Mystery Festival in March. Students were given a "crime scene" including evidence such as an ice cube tray, a guitar pick, pieces of blue string, a garbage can with a candy wrapper, English Leather cologne box and a towel. In their efforts to determine the perpetrator, students conducted tests, including a fingerprint test. more

WE-MO-CO students earn
VICA honors at Alfred competition
Thirty-one students from WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center took first, second and third place in the VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) Alfred Area I Competition recently. The students, representing Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES component school districts, competed in various categories such as Data Entry, Office Technology, Precision Machining, and Auto Service. more

The Hilton-Parma Seniors have scheduled an upcoming trip to Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada for Springfest on Wednesday, May 22. A sit-down family style luncheon, followed by seasonal entertainment, including Broadway hits at Liuna Gardens are included. more

Blue Devils sweep in opener
The Brockport Blue Devils boy’s tennis team didn’t lose a single set in a 7-0 win over Greece Olympia on a cold, windy April 9th afternoon in the season opening match for both teams. The Blue Devils lost five seniors from last year’s team, but are as deep as ever this season. more

FLCC woodsmen earn state championship
Students from Finger Lakes Community College, Paul Smith's College and the State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse chopped, sawed, tossed, climbed and rolled to settle both team and individual woodsmen's championship status Saturday, April 6. more

Limiting sports injuries in kids
The Arthritis Foundation, Upstate New York Chapter, is offering a workshop for coaches, parents and recreation staff, "Limiting Childhood Sports Injuries" on Wednesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. at Total Sports Experience, 880 Elmgrove Road. more

Each of the winter athletic teams at Spencerport Central Schools participated in the "Spencerport Student-Athletes Care" community service project during the 2001-02 school year. more

Spring 2002 LOC Derby kicks off the season
The 2002 Spring LOC Derby is scheduled for April 26 to May 5. In addition to the top 81 (grand prize winner and top 20 in each of the four divisions) there will again be another 36 anglers that will be cashing in. The largest fish caught (lakewide) in each of the four categories of salmon, lake trout, brown trout, and rainbow/steelhead for each of the first nine days of the derby will win $100 each. more
