During a 90-minute walking tour led by Civil War reenators, 21st century civilians will glimpse life as it was behind the battle lines of the Civil War. The realities of life both on and off the battlefield will be depicted in 12 vignettes, reenacted throughout the historic village at the Genesee Country Village & Museum on September 7. more

Brockport police arrest rape suspect
Brockport police have arrested the suspect accused of an early morning sexual assault that occurred in a Perry Street home on August 17. What began as an apparent burglary attempt on August 17 turned into a sexual assault, according to Brockport Chief of Police Daniel Varrenti. more
Civil War reenactment at Hamlin Beach State Park
All the participating regiments, north and south, fire volleys to salute their portrayl of Civil War history Saturday, August 17, 2002 at Hamlin Beach State Park. The re-enactment is traditionall on of the largest in the area and drew units from New York and surrounding states on a hot and steamy August day. more
Coastal Cleanup aims to protect shorelines
The Water Education Collaborative, located at the Rochester Museum and Science Center, is inviting the community to participate in this year's International Coastal Cleanup. Last year, over 200 volunteers helped collect over two tons of trash. The effort aims to protect and restore the shorelines of the Genesee River and Lake Ontario. more

" Master of Ceremonies Dave McKinley asked the crowd gathered in Brockport on August 18 for the unveiling of the Firefighters Memorial Monument. Remembrance, grief and healing were felt, and shared, by firefighters, policemen, emergency service personnel and more than 1,100 who attended the event. more
Duck Derby hits new record for entries
A record for numbers of ducks sold was set for the Brockport Summer Art Festival Duck Derby this year. A great turnout at the festival and heavy pre-sales contributed to over $32,000 raised for BISCO and Lakeside Memorial Hospital. more
'Faces' is Apple Fest photo contest theme
The Apple of My Eye Photo Contest at this year's Hilton Apple Fest, October 4-5, is extending a "call for entries" for photographs of that special face. more
Sweden/Clarkson Community Center Grand Opening September 2
Tours, meeting the new recreation director, food, fun and games are on the agenda for the grand opening celebration at the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center on September 2, Sweden Supervisor Nat O. (Buddy) Lester said. more
She holds her own in the Hilton Public Works Dept.
Karen Strassner was a part-time worker mowing lawns for the Village of Hilton in 1997 when she heard of a full-time opening in the Hilton Public Works Department. Encouraged by her father, Dale Zarpentine, who had worked for the Town of Parma, to seek outdoor work, she applied for the job. Superintendent Tom Tilebein interviewed her and she was hired. Tilebein says, "It was the best thing we could have done." more

Brockport Fire Department hosts open house
The Brockport Ambulance Corps and the Brockport Fire Department host a community Open House at Fire Headquarters, 38 Market Street this Saturday, August 31 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Firefighters and ambulance personnel will be on hand to answer questions about fire safety, basic first aid training that is available, or to do blood pressure checks. Visitors will get a chance for an up close and personal look at fire trucks and new ambulances. more

A ceremony establishing the Spencerport Fire District will be held September 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Clyde Carter Gazebo in Spencerport. more
Clarkson Summer Concert Series features female vocalists
Four of Rochester's well known singers will be brought together for one night only at the Clarkson Summer Concert Series at Clarkson Community Park on Lake Road in Brockport, on Monday, August 26 at 7 p.m. Dee Adams, Julie Dunlap, Maria Gillard, and Annie Wells will share the stage, performing their original music as well as a few cover songs by popular female musicians who have inspired them. The performance is dubbed "4 Strong Voices, 1 Night of Music." more
Fall book sale time at the Parma Public Library
Doors open on this year's Fall Book Sale at the Parma Public Library, 7 West Avenue, Hilton, at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 16. The sale will run until September 24. more
Hilton-Parma Recreation Fall Program brochure released
Hilton Parma Recreation has announced their Fall Program line-up. Brochures will be distributed through the Hilton Central School district the first week of September. They will be available at the Parma Library, Parma Town Hall and the Village Community Center at 59 Henry Street. Registration will begin on Monday, September 9. more

The Monroe County Health Department has scheduled several immunization clinics to assure that children have received all of the shots required for school entry in September. more
Parma remembers with September celebration
On September 14, Parma will remember the first anniversary of 9/11/01, commemorate the 176th anniversary of the writing of the National Anthem, mark the 35th anniversary of Shirley Cox Husted's appointment as Parma town historian and welcome descendants of the Rev. Charles Hilton from whom the village was named and the Honorable Elam Cross, the first president of the Village of Hilton. more

Volunteers needed to write for the blind
Volunteers are needed to provide Braille transcription for the blind in the Spencerport area. Volunteers transcribe textbooks, novels, cookbooks, menus, and similar items. more
Wagon missing
The Hamlin Wheel Fest Committee is missing one of their specially made little red wagons used for planters for flower display on Lake Road. This wagon was taken from in front of Krony's at the corner of Lake Road and Hamlin Clarkson Town Line Road sometime since August 5. more

Assemblymember secures money for hospital
Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester/Chili/Wheatland) secured $3 million to help renovate the Rochester General Hospital Emergency Room - ensuring the hospital can meet the demands of providing a high standard of care for all patients, she stated in a press release. more

Spencerport Driver Education registration September 9
Students wishing to register for the fall semester Driver Education class should attend a meeting with a parent or guardian on Monday, September 9, not September 6 as previously published. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Board of Education Meeting Room in the Spencerport School District Administration Building at 71 Lyell Avenue. more
Students keep learning through summer months
By 10:35 a.m. on August 1, it had to be 85 degrees inside the classrooms in the north wing of Greece Olympia High School, one of the sites for BOCES 2s Regional Summer School. But Joel Cotton, a soon-to-be senior from Chuchville-Chili, was determined not to let the heat deter him from his goal. Joel was in summer school to complete his junior-year English course satisfactorily, a challenge that involved raising both his class average and his final score on the tough New York State Comprehensive English Regents Exam. more

Hilton-Parma Senior Center nutrition staff member retires
After eighteen years of service, Pauline Jock announced her retirement from the position of kitchen aide from the Hilton-Parma Senior Center's Nutrition Program. Pauline's work began since the center's doors opened on February 14, 1984. Since that day, she has been instrumental in providing service and assistance with meals for the senior population. While assisting in the kitchen, she also became a close friend to many of the seniors. more

Baker wins Eddie Meath MVP Defensive Player Award
Jimmy Baker, who represented Brockport Blue Devils Football, won the prestigious Eddie Meath MVP Defensive Player Award for the West Side Football Team, coached by LeRoy High School Coach, Brian Moran. more
Lumberjack Festival marks 20 years
The Macedon Center Community Lumberjack Festival, 20 years old this year, will feature 46 men and women from all over New York state. The festival will be held September 7-8 at the Macedon Center Firemen's Field on Canandaigua Road. more
Premier Cheer's first open house September 1
Premier Cheer, Inc., a new gym and facility for cheerleading, will host an open house on Sunday, September 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. at their 1150 University Avenue, Building 5, location in Rochester. The open house will allow parents and children to tour the new 10,000 square-foot state-of-the-art center, talk with the owners and NCA-certified cheerleading coaches, and win Premier Cheer T-shirts, water bottles and other prizes. There will also be a drawing for a free six-month membership. Food and refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon. more

The Red Sox, from the Spencerport boys 8-year old division, won the playoff championship in a tough battle against the Yankees. more
Sporting license procedures changed
2002-2003 sporting licenses can be purchased beginning August 26. The Department of Environmental Conservation will be implementing a new program called DECALS. New computers have been installed in all the town clerk's offices and will be a direct link to the DEC in Albany. Each license agent will be creating a new data bank of information this year. Therefore, past license or proof of a hunter safety certificate are required at the time of purchase of a new license. Documentation of New York residency is also required. more
