Challenge and Reward for Troop 62
On August 17, boys, girls and adults representing the Boy Scouts and the Venture Crew of Troop 62, met at a farm located along the canal in Holley. After quickly setting up camp in a small patch of pines, the group headed for Medina with 14 canoes in tow to embark on a trip down the canal, which would end back at their campsite. The distance was estimated at about 20 miles. more

Chili Fire Department receives $75,000
Asemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester, Chili, Wheatland) recently announced $75,000 to assist the Chili Fire Department in funding its Apparatus Exhaust Project. more

Friends of Greenway seek historic photos of canal and railroad
In its efforts to promote knowledge, appreciation and preservation of the Genesee Valley Greenway as an historic transportation corridor, the Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway have launched a Historic Photo Project. They are searching for any photos that might show the Genesee Valley Canal or Pennsylvania Railroad in Livingston County. (The railroad was known as the Pennsylvania Railroad Rochester Branch, but before that it was the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad, and before that, the Buffalo, New York, and Philadelphia Railroad.) more

Generous people to receive award
Recognizing the innovative generosity of local people, Rochester Area Community Foundation will present philanthropy awards to five area residents at the group's annual luncheon on September 20. more

Harvest Ball helps fund wishes
The Second Annual Make-A-Wish Harvest Ball hopes to raise nearly $90,000 to grant the special wishes of children in Western New York who have life-threatening illnesses. The black-tie event, scheduled for Saturday, November 16, will be held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. more

Hilton High Class of 1937 holds reunion
On Tuesday, August 27, the class of 1937 of Hilton High met at the Arlington for lunch to celebrate their 65th reunion. Of the 21 remaining members of the class, 11 classmates joined in the festivities. more

Household Hazardous Waste collections slated
Monroe County's Department of Environmental Services (DES) and the towns of Gates, Chili, Riga, Wheatland and Churchville and the Village of Scottsville have joined forces to hold an appointment-only Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection at the Gates Highway Garage, 475 Trabold Road, on Saturday, September 21 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. more

Lions fund new park sign
Over the past twenty some years, the Spencerport Lions Club has supported additions to Pineway Ponds Park. Starting back in the early 1980s with the construction of a pavilion which is now the Owen Lodge, the club added two more pavilions which are now the Gravelle Lodge and a storage facility. more

RPO musicians present 80th anniversary open house
The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra has announced that they will kick-off their 80th Anniversary Season with a free Open House. The Eastman Theatre will be open to the public on Saturday, September 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and musical activities are planned for adults and children of all ages. The RPO's 80th Anniversary Committee is chaired by Dr. Jacques and Mrs. Dawn Lipson. more

Walkable Communities workshop sponsored by GTC
The Genesee Transportation Council (GTC) is sponsoring an evening workshop on "Walkable Communities" with nationally recognized pedestrian specialist, Dan Burden, on Tuesday, September 17, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Rochester. more

Apple Pie entries sought for contest
The Seventh Apple Pie Contest will be held Saturday morning, October 5, during Hilton Apple Fest and is open to all New York state residents. The pies must be made with New York state apples. Pies will be judged on appearance, taste, and texture. There will be a youth category for ages 16 years and younger and an adult category for ages 17 and older. more

Arts and Letters Lecture considers American electoral system
Genesee Community College is offering a luncheon lecture entitled "Unwritten Amendments: Who Really Gets to be President?" on Friday, September 13, for noon to 1:30 p.m. at Tillman's Historic Village Inn in Childs. Presenter Kirk House will review what the U.S. Constitution says about who can and cannot be president and how these requirements have changed over the past 225 years. Discussion will include the reasons behind the doomed campaigns of political figures such as Ross Perot, Jesse Jackson, George Wallace, Theodore Roosevelt, and a discussion of upcoming presidential elections. The $23 fee includes lunch and dessert. Seating is limited; pre-registration is highly recommended. more

First rail car shipment arrives
Allied Frozen Storage, Inc.'s newest property, Sweden Industrial Center, has been selected for inclusion in Monroe County's Empire Zone. more

Hojack Road project completed
During the week of August 26, the Village of Hilton DPW completed the Hojack Road and infrastructure project started in 1995. more

Ogden Town Board delays 9/11/02 regular meeting
The start of the regular Ogden Town Board meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 11, 2002 will be delayed from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. According to Ogden Supervisor Gay Lenhard, the reason for the change in time is to offer everyone the opportunity to attend the "Remembering September 11, 2001" service that begins at 7 p.m. at the Village of Spencerport Gazebo.

Holley Elementary School welcomes vice principal
Holley Central School District has created the position of vice principal to help oversee the 750-student elementary school and has welcomed Sheryl Feigenbaum to fill that position. The growth of the district and the elementary building, along with moving the sixth-grade to the Elementary School, prompted the need for a vice principal there, according to district officials. more

SUNY Brockport Alumni elect new board members
The Alumni Association of the State University of New York College at Brockport elected six new members and eight current members for three-year terms on the Association's Board of Directors. They will join 11 other board members whose terms have not yet expired. more

H-P seniors take fall foliage trip
The Hilton-Parma Seniors can take a two hour guided tour through Letchworth State Park Friday, October 18. Seniors will enjoy the "colors of fall" as well as a sit-down luncheon at the historic Hillside Inn. After the meal, there will be time set aside for shopping and browsing at the quaint shops in Wyoming, including the "Countryside Decorator" in Warsaw. more

Goalkeeper Jarod Miller made 18 saves and Ricky Grizzanti had a goal and an assist to lead Hilton to a 2-0 win over Brockport in boy’s soccer September 3. more

National Hunting and Fishing Day -Avon style
September 28 and 29 are days of celebration for outdoor enthusiasts as they flock to the Avon area. The occasion, the National Hunting and Fishing Day weekend festival, at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Avon Office located on Route 5/20, half way between East Avon and Lima. Recent years have seen 10,000 to 20,000 people attending. This is the 28th annual gathering at Avon. Each day runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. more

New coach joins SUNY Brockport staff
Mark Krueger joins the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagle coaching staff this fall as the new head coach of the men's and women's cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field teams. He replaces Brian Gawne, who was coach for the past two seasons. more

Spencerport Soccer Club donates shelters
The Spencerport Soccer Club has donated two team shelters, valued at a total of $10,000, to the Spencerport School District for use during home varsity soccer games at the district's soccer stadium. The covered shelters replace the original wooden benches that were damaged beyond repair in a wind storm last spring. more

T'ai Chi program continues through H-P Rec.
Hilton Parma Recreation is offering a continuation of their T'ai Chi program this fall, beginning on Monday, September 23 and ending on November 18. (8 lessons). more
