Canal town mayors to focus on revitalization
The 177th anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal on October 26, 1825 is the occasion for a forum being organized by the Planning Commission for the Western Erie Canal Heritage Corridor involving mayors and other local elected officials who will share, discuss and debate revitalization strategies for their town centers utilizing the potential of the Erie Canal as a component to attract investment and rebirth. more

Children's illustrator to visit Brockport

Genesee County gets new "Tax-Free" Empire Zone
A new Empire Zone has been approved for Genesee County - a step that will create 601 new jobs and retain 56 existing jobs, while also generating more than $57.1 million in new investment. This new zone provides essentially tax-free status for certain areas within Genesee County to help facilitate new private-sector investment, job creation and economic growth for the local community, according to NYS Governor George Pataki. more

Mexican "Day of the Dead" presentation to be given in Holley
On Wednesday, October 23 residents in and around Holley will have the opportunity to "travel" to Mexico, via the Community Free Library on the Public Square. Family Ties Do Not Die, a slide presentation depicting the "Day of the Dead" in Oaxaca, Mexico, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Photographer and RIT professor Dennis Defibaugh will lead the audience through his colorful images and experiences of this important Mexican holiday. more

Notes from Brockport/Sweden
We are celebrating our agricultural heritage in the Village of Brockport with a harvest festival on October 25. Town Historian Kathy Goetz is preparing an attractive, readable tri-fold brochure listing farms and farm markets in our area. more

Ogden budget spending up, tax rate stable
For the fourth consecutive year, residents of the Town of Ogden will have no tax increase. Although there is a 2.8 percent increase in expenditures, fund balancing and revenue adjustments have kept property taxes at a status quo. more

Red hats symbolize a state of mind
The limousine driver said it as well as anyone could. The members of Brockport's Granny Apple Society wanted to pay him before the trip to the Niagara Casino began. "You can pay me now or later," he offered. "We don't want you to forget," said the purple-clad, red feather-boaed woman in the back seat. There was just a moment's pause as the driver's eyes swept over the 11 vibrant red hats in his vehicle. "I don't think I'll be forgetting you anytime soon," he laughed. more

Hundreds of Scooby-Doos, Barbie Princesses and a Spiderman or two will march up Main Street in Churchville on October 31 when the Churchville Lions Club treats area youth to its annual costume parade and Halloween party. more

Forces of Nature Dance Theater Company
to perform at SUNY Brockport

Artistic Director and Choreographer Abdel Salaam's New York City based Forces of Nature Dance Theater Company will be in residence at SUNY Brockport's Department of Dance for technique classes, lectures, lecture demonstrations and two concerts, October 20-26. more

Genesee County Farm Bureau elects officers, support policy
The Genesee County Farm Bureau held their annual meeting on Thursday, October 10 at the Batavia Party House. The business portion of the meeting included election of officers. Dean Norton returns as president and Dale Stein as vice president. Dean Recker and Steve Boldt were re-elected to serve on the board of directors. Shelley Reynolds is a newly elected director. more

Groups plan last canal "sweep"
The Town of Sweden's Adopt-A-Trail committee will close the 2002 canal season with a cleanup "sweep" along the towpath on Saturday, October 26, according to Bill Andrews, committee chair. Members of the eight volunteer groups on the committee will meet at Harvester Park in the Village of Brockport at 9 a.m. more

Hillside Cemetery campaign underway
A campaign to help with maintenance and preservation of Hillside Cemetery in Holley is underway. Tree removal, deteriorating landscape and lawn mowing are costly and if enough funds are not raised, the ownership of the cemetery could be taken over by the Town of Clarendon and put on the tax rolls. more

Museum attracts visitors from afar
Brockport has a gem that I think some of you are not aware of, our Museum. Recently, two families have gone out of their way to visit Brockport. First was a mother, father and son from Scotland who came because they had heard about our Reaper. I have never seen anyone examine it so closely; they were fascinated by it. They left me with the impression they had similar ones in Scotland. more

Registration for the Walk for Exercise/Health Program will take place in the Spencerport Terry A. Taylor School, Large Group Classroom, (PAC), 399 Ogden Parma Town Line Road, on October 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. more

Hamlin Fire Department receives federal grant
According to Congressman John J. LaFalce (D-29, NY) the Walker Fire District has been awarded $19,759 under the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The Walker Fire District serves a portion of the Town of Hamlin. more

C-C parents group donates equipment
The Churchville Elementary School Parent's Association (CESPA) has recently purchased equipment totaling $6,869 for Churchville Elementary School. This equipment has been donated as a gift from CESPA. more

C-C school district residents asked to vote on funding change
A special vote will be held on Wednesday, October 30 relating to the on-going Churchville-Chili capital improvement project. Voters will be asked to consider approval of a resolution to re-allocate already approved funds to the transportation facility from the rest of the project. more

Churchville-Chili staff make a difference
Churchville-Chili staff raised a total of $19,029.27 for the 2001-2002 United Way campaign. The 2001-2002 average employee gift of $123.57 increased by 8.3 percent from the 2000-2001 campaign. The United Way education division consists of 23 school districts. Churchville-Chili ranks third in this division in the average gift category. more

College students pitch in for Make A Difference Day
Saturday, October 26, SUNY College at Brockport will take part in the annual Make a Difference Day. more

Cosgrove Band shares talents with Manhattan students
Just after the September 11, 2001 attacks, Cosgrove Middle School band students in Spencerport, began a practice-a-thon to raise funds for the relief effort. Students learned that several schoolchildren in the World Trade Center vicinity were evacuated from their schools and they did not return to them for many months. more

Hilton High School social studies teacher
named Teacher of the Year

Hilton High School social studies teacher and varsity wrestling coach Chuck Partridge was named the 2002-03 Hilton Central School Teachers' Association annual Teacher of the Year at the faculty and staff convocation at Hilton High School held in September. H.C.S.T.A. President Kathleen Donahue presented him with the award. more

Hilton students learning respect,
responsibility through Character Education

"Have you ever been teased?" asked Hilton Assistant Principal Karen Bolinger of the fourth graders in teacher Rachel Karwoski's classroom. Hands shoot up ... "How did that make you feel?" Students responded "not that happy." Then students and Mrs. Bolinger brainstormed things they can do when they are teased or see someone else the object of teasing or bullying: "stick up for them," "tell the person to please stop - it's hurtful," "tell an adult." more

Spencerport Music Association (SMA) annual citrus fruit sale will be held from October 24 through November 7. A variety of citrus items will be available. more

It was definitely Sweet Sixteen for sophomore Tom Graham as he scored two first half goals on his birthday to lead Spencerport to a 2-0 win over Hilton October 15. more

Hill, Smith pace Blue Devil swimmers
Ariana Hill and Natalie Smith each had two first place finishes as Brockport defeated Hilton 95-72 in girl’s swimming October 15. more
