Carousel's future undecided
John Marello's application for Certificate of Appropriateness for a carousel at 148 South Union Street in the Village of Spencerport was approved by the Architectural Review Board on July 23 by a vote of four to one. Village Trustee Ted Rauber voted against the plans, while Trustees Steve Russell, Glenn Granger, Tim Peer and Mayor Ted Walker voted to approve the plans. more

New pools bring new dangers
There is a new danger to children, and some people don't want to hear about it. The problem is with the (sometimes smaller) soft-sided and metal-sided swimming or wading pools that can be purchased from discount stores for about $100 to $200. These pools are deep enough for a child to drown in and often have a filter system that is incorrectly hooked up to an electrical source. more

Sweden reforms garage sale policy
The Town of Sweden has adopted a new policy to govern residential garage sales. After numerous complaints from town residents about perpetual garage sales, homes that have a garage sale every week, as well as the littering of old garage sale signs, the town board addressed the topic and a new policy was written. more

End of summer events at Letchworth State Park
Letchworth State Park will be hosting the 14th annual Stone Tool Craftsman Show on August 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Highbanks Recreation Area near the Mt. Morris entrance to the park. more

Friends of the Hamlin Library plan book sale
The Friends of the Hamlin Library are once again hosting their largest book sale of the year with a completely new inventory of used books. All of the books from previous sales were donated to an inner city library and continuous donations from individuals and other area organizations have resulted in a sizable collection of 12,000 used books that the Friends are offering for sale. more

Hamlin plans celebration of Sesquicentennial
Hamlin will celebrate the town's 150th anniversary at Hamlin Heritage Day Wednesday, August 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hamlin Town Hall, Route 19. more

Hamlin Town Clerk's hours extended
The hours of the Hamlin Town Clerk have been changed to accommodate the purchasing of hunting licenses. more

Holley Library announces new hours, computer classes
The Community Free Library in Holley has changed its hours of operation. Beginning on September 2, the library will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. There will be no Saturday hours. more

Hubbard Springs Garden Club to do
fall plantings and clean up at town complexes

The Town of Chili and Hubbard Springs Garden Club are looking for volunteers to help with fall planting and clean up at each of the town complexes.

Local resident elected American Legion Auxiliary District President
At the New York State American Legion Auxiliary Convention in Syracuse July 19, Sharon Arthur, Hillary Drive, Chili, an active member of the Chili Unit #1830 since 1985, was elected president for the year 2003-04, of the eight counties of the Seventh District, including Monroe. more

NYS DEC Hunter Safety course scheduled in Parma
Instructors certified by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation will conduct a Hunter Safety Program on September 2, 3 and 6, at Northstar Sportsman's Club. Those interested in attending may register in-person at the Town of Parma Clerk's office, at 1300 Hilton-Parma Corners Road, Hilton from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. more

One Step volunteers in the nation's capital
One Step owner Bob Ottley along with two employees and their sons recently went to Washington, DC to help beautify Arlington National Cemetery. Ottley, Mike Boehley and Bob Samuelson, joined by sons Andy and Jeremy as well as other green industry volunteers, applied 90 tons of lime to more than 200 acres of the historic cemetery. more

Seventh District to hold fall conference
The annual conference of the Seventh District of the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of New York, will be held on Friday, September 12, at the Genesee River Restaurant and Reception Center, 134 North Main Street, Mt. Morris. more

Top readers at Community Free Library announced
The Community Free Library has just completed the 2003 New York State Summer Reading Program. This year, a total of 91 children participated. They read a total of 1,195 books. Prizes were awarded in three categories. more

Volunteers needed for Christmas on the Canal
Volunteers are needed for this year's Christmas on the Canal. The first meeting is scheduled for August 26 at the Spencerport Village Office, 27 West Avenue, at 7 p.m. with three additional meetings which are as follows: Tuesday, September 30; Tuesday, October 28 and Tuesday, November 25. more

Hilton Board of Education seeks applicants to fill vacated board position
At its August 12 meeting, the seven-member Hilton Board of Education decided on a process to fill the remainder of the term vacated by member Dale Beehler who resigned July 1 due to personal reasons. more

Kendall names new high school principal
The Kendall Central School District has hired Ty Zinkiewich as principal at Kendall Jr./Sr. High School. Zinkiewich, 32, most recently served as assistant principal at Greece Odyssey Middle/High School for grades 6-12. In Kendall, he will oversee grades 7-12. more

Little Red Schoolhouse graduates
To the music of "Pomp and Circumstance," Ogden Recreation's Little Red Schoolhouse graduated 19 students. Friends and family were treated to the signing of "If You're Happy and You Know It," facts about the American flag, and a mini play about friendship. more

Residents advised of Brockport CSD registration/student information
The Brockport Central School District Registrar's Office reminds all new residents to register their children for the 2003-2004 school year. To ensure that student placement and bus transportation will be in place prior to the first day of school, district residents should contact the Registrar's Office at 637-1857 for a registration packet. more

The BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education Center offers a six-week summer course for Cosmetology stu-dents to practice skills, earn hours and prepare for the New York State board exam. more

Hilton Lady Wildcats win in Buffalo
The Hilton Lady Wildcats Northeast Regional AAU Basketball team wrapped up a successful summer season with a tournament victory at the University of Buffalo High School Team Tournament. Amy Pratt and Marisa Clark led the team in scoring throughout the tournament as the Lady Wildcats went undefeated (5-0). Victories included wins over Albion, Toronto, Southwestern (Olean), Lockport and a championship victory over Springville 47-42. more

Water workouts: The wave of the future
On Wednesday nights this fall, the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center will be offering a water aerobics class called Aquadynamics at the Brockport High School Pool. The program will begin on September 24 and conclude on December 17. more
