Bergen offers municipal electric customers energy efficient light bulbs
The Village of Bergen, in conjunction with the Independent Energy Efficiency Program, Inc. (IEEP), will offer two Energy Star® labeled compact fluorescent lamps (CFL's) to residential electric customers. The IEEP assists municipal utilities facilitate the installation of energy efficient technologies throughout New York state. more

"Deb's Meds" Trust Fund to help with kidney transplant medications
Friends of Debbie Vernam at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencerport have set up a trust fund to collect money donations to help pay for the co-payments for medications that will be needed after Debbie has a kidney transplant. In order for her to have the transplant, she will need to afford many expensive medications in the first year following the procedure, according to a representative of the group. more

Fairfield Place DEIS meeting September 16
Citizens concerned with the proposed Fairfield Place housing will have a chance to sound off to Parma town officials Tuesday, September 16 at 7 p.m. at the Parma Town Hall. The town will hold a public hearing to get reactions to the project's draft environmental impact statement. more

Foster Homes needed for future Guide Dogs
Guiding Eyes for the Blind (GEB) has an ongoing need for individuals or families to provide foster homes for potential future guide dogs. Approved raisers receive an eight week old, specially bred Labrador Retriever puppy, which will be kept safe, taught good manners and socialized to prepare for formal guide dog training. more

Grocery sets scene for wedding
On September 5, Rick Furnal, owner of the Hilton Big M, permitted a major rearrangement of the Produce Department to free up a large space in front of the green onions, cukes and red, yellow and green peppers to accommodate a 2 p.m. wedding. The bride, Kathleen Smith, had requested the use of store space to enable her Big M friends to be there and to avoid "a stuffy, old wedding and have fun." more

Historical societies, museums open for Olde Northampton Day
Eight museums and historical societies in this area are sponsoring an "Olde Northampton Heritage Day" on Sunday afternoon, September 28. They are jointly holding open houses, inviting area residents to tour their facilities and view their museum collections. Admission is free. more

Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce seeks nominees for awards
The Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for its 2003 awards, which will be presented at a special dinner on Friday, January 30, 2004 at the Whittier Party House. The awards are the Clyde W. Carter Citizen of the Year, the Business Person of the Year and the Civic Beautification Award. more

Trolley Station restoration project gets underway
From 1908 to 1931, the Buffalo, Lockport and Rochester Trolley transported people to and from school and work and also on pleasure excursions. Students in Gates rode the BL&R to Spencerport because Gates did not have a high school. more

Brockport Fire Department dedicates flagpoles at monument
The Brockport Fire Department has received two bronze colored flagpoles as a donation from the Kenyon family in honor of their father, Everett Kenyon, as he turns 80 years old. The poles will display the American flag and the Brockport Fire Department flag. more

Community Chorus begins rehearsals
The Spencerport Community Chorus will begin rehearsals for its Winter concert season on Sunday, September 14, at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church (The Historic White Church) on Church Street in Spencerport. more

Electric car shuttle offered at Park Ridge
Park Ridge Hospital has received three electric motorcars donated by Global Electric Motorcars, LLC, a DaimlerChrysler Company. The donation is part of a national program providing the cars to non-profit agencies. more

Fall Recreation brochure available
Hilton-Parma Recreation has released their Fall Program Brochure. The brochure is available for pick-up at the Parma Public Library, the Parma Town Hall and the Village Community Center and was distributed to the school district by homeroom. more

New racing team member
Mike and Rhoda (Wolfe) Fauci added a new member to their racing team August 26 when Nicholas Turner Fauci (7 lb. 14 oz., 20-1/2 inches) was born at Lakeside Memorial Hospital in Brockport. Nicholas left the hospital in his first GoKart, built by his father and featuring a Coyte racing chassis. more

Scarecrow Festival returns to Springdale Farm
Back by popular demand, Springdale Farm will be hosting the Scarecrow Festival on Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Recent fall festivals at Springdale Farm featured a corn maze. Due to expansion at the farm, the Scarecrow Festival returns at the request of visitors. more

Following a 328 to 466 loss to Austin F. Warner III in the September 9 Republican Primary, Ed Evans said it is time for him to walk away from Hamlin town government. more

Health Emergency Preparedness funds awarded
Assembly Republican Leader Charles H. Nesbitt (R,C-Albion) and Governor George Pataki announced $484,846 in federal grant funds to further enhance Orleans, Genesee, Monroe and Niagara counties readiness for bioterrorism and other health emergencies. The money is part of a $79.5 million federal grant issued to New York State by the United States Health and Human Services. more

Holley Mayor Dan Schiavone resigns
Dan Schiavone sought election in the Village of Holley because he felt he could make a difference. "I have never lost sight of my goal to assist the village I love and am so proud of," he wrote in a letter to trustees. He presented the letter Tuesday, September 19. more

Hilton Teacher and Staff Person of the Year chosen
Hilton Central Schools' Teacher of the Year and Support Person of the Year were named at the annual faculty and staff convocation held September 2 at Hilton High School. Named 2003-04 Teacher of the Year was 25-year teaching veteran Ojars "OJ" Vidas, a social studies teacher at Merton Williams Middle School. Named Staff Person of the Year was 14-year teacher aide, Kathy Grinnell, from the Village Elementary School. more

Chili Senior Center programs
Simply Lite Jazzercize - for seniors on Wednesday mornings October 1 - November 5 from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. This class is a combination of aerobics and exercises designed to improve strength, balance and flexibility using easy-to-follow movements. Participants should bring water bottle and hand weights. The cost for the six week program is $36. more

Brockport netters take Athena
Wins at first and second singles along with second and third doubles enabled the Brockport girl's tennis team to beat Greece Athena 4-3 for their second win of the young season on their home court. more

West Virginia women's soccer assistant coach Jenn DePrez has been selected as one of 500 winners of the second annual AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year award. more

Holley basketball players gather for reunion
Fifty-seven years ago, they were the Genesee-Orleans Class A high school basketball champions. The same 58 years ago. During their regular senior year season, they were 16-0. more

Local resident is state champ
Gary Rivers of Spencerport won the New York State title in the Master Class of a shooting sport known as sporting clays. He won the title in Franklinville, New York in August. more

Rochester Rookies receive gift
Easter Seals New York - Western Region's Rochester Rookies Jr. Wheelchair Sports Team has been awarded a $1,000 gift as part of the Rochester Press-Radio Club's charitable giving program. more

Soccer teams set for September 20 event
September 20 is Soccer Night at Brockport High School. The new players of the Brockport Middle School Modified and Freshman teams will be introduced during half-time of the BHS varsity games. more
