Brockport firefighters respond to working house fire
Firefighters from Brockport and Hamlin responded to a report of a house fire at 84 Lyman Street in the Village of Brockport at about 4:15 p.m. September 18. First arriving apparatus reported heavy smoke coming from the structure as they pulled up in front. more

Flu vaccine clinics open October 1
For the first time in three years, all residents of Monroe County have the ability to obtain a flu shot beginning October 1. According to Rachel Gressel, director of the University of Rochester Medical Center's Community Nursing Center's flu clinic program, this winter's version of the vaccine will be available on time and in sufficient quantities to make it possible to offer flu vaccinations to all residents, without consideration to age or health issues. more

Funding announced for new senior housing project in Brockport
A grant of $185,342 has been awarded to the Brockport BDC Limited Monroe Partnership for 32 new senior housing units in Monroe County. The Village Center will provide affordable housing for senior citizens, age 62 and over, handicapped or disabled, that will be easy walking distance to the center of Brockport, according to Assemblyman Bill Reilich who made the announcement. more

Local volunteers working hard on the
"Ultimate" household and antique sale

The dates and location are set and preparations are well underway for the ABC Household & Antique Sale to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester. An army of volunteers has begun to sort and price the donated merchandise for the sale which starts October 16. more

Spencerport hires code enforcement officer
The job title of Village Code Enforcer sounds ominous, but Kevin Kelly assures that his position is more of a liaison between Spencerport village residents and the village board. "I don't want to be the hammer. I prefer to think of myself as a facilitator," he said. more

Spencerport improves business district sidewalks
Several weeks ago businesses along the east side of Union Street in Spencerport were notified that the sidewalks in front of their storefronts would be replaced. more

Volunteer effort refurbishes grave markers
It started with just one stone - tombstone, that is. Ogden resident Francis "Fran" Maier, Sr., began by helping Ben Roach, caretaker of St. John the Evangelist cemetery in Spencerport, pick up overturned and fallen stones, so that it would be easier for Roach to mow the grass. more

Library launches Scavenger Hunt
The Ogden Farmers' Library sponsors a community scavenger hunt as part of their Fall 2003 Program series. Families, teams and individuals can pick up scavenger hunt lists at the library beginning Monday, September 29, and will have two weeks to find as many of the 33 items listed as possible. All items can be found within the Spencerport and Ogden communities. more

Power outage scheduled in Village of Churchville
On Sunday, October 5, 2003 the Churchville electric system will be turned off to do much needed maintenance on the electric substation, according to Superintendent David Adams. more

Wellness Center offers diabetes education
The Daisy Marquis Jones Family Wellness Center of Lakeside Memorial Hospital is presenting its bi-annual Diabetes Education Series to the community. This program consists of six consecutive weekly sessions starting on Wednesday, October 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. All sessions will be held at Lakeside Memorial Hospital. The fee for the series is $25. more

Film series at the Strand returns
The Sweden Democratic Film Series kicks off its fourth season with a screening of John Ford's classic western, "Stagecoach" (1939).The film will be shown at the Strand Theatre on Main Street in Brockport on Thursday, October 16 at 7 p.m. A post screening discussion of the film will take place at the Fire Hall on Market Street immediately following. Refreshments will be served. more

Sweden town supervisor candidate Gary Skoog and town board candidates Bob Capo and Jennifer Skoog-Harvey talked with over 30 residents on a recent weekend regarding concerns about the current town board's spending practices. The three candidates spent a Saturday afternoon walking door-to-door in the Evergreen Road/Clark Street neighborhood in Brockport. more

Brockport High School library to be open evenings
Students at the Brockport High School will now have more options for getting their homework done. Soon they can go to the high school library at night to work on research projects, access the Internet, form study groups, or for a quiet place to do homework. Beginning October 15, the library will be open Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. more

Brockport High School musician
to participate in All State Jazz Ensemble

Brockport High School senior Mark Dudek will join musicians from high schools across New York state in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Conference All State Jazz Ensemble at the Eastman Theater. The All State Jazz Ensemble is part of the NYSSMA convention in Rochester from November 30 through December 2, which includes performances by choir, concert band, wind ensemble, vocal jazz and orchestra. more

Hilton High School will celebrate its annual Homecoming on Friday, October 3, with a parade down Main Street, Hilton, beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a varsity football game at LeBeau Field at 7 p.m. against Greece Athena High School. more

Parents of students at Hilton's Merton Williams Middle School are invited to the school on Tuesday, October 7, from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. to participate in the annual Visitation Day. more

Kendall facilities project to be dedicated at Homecoming
A dedication ceremony in honor of Kendall Central School District's $4.75 million facilities project will take place during Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, October 4. The festivities will begin at 10 a.m. with a parade that will head down Route 37 to Route 18 ending at Noon Boulevard, the new road that runs between the Elementary School and Jr./Sr. High School. more

Nativity BVM school closes after 127 years
The residents of Utica and Holley Streets in Brockport noticed a big change this September. The streets are quieter and there are fewer school buses driving by. The parking lot is empty and the sound of children's voices no longer fills the neighborhood during recess. more

Trip to Casino Niagara planned
The Hilton-Parma Seniors have scheduled a trip to Casino Niagara in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Included in this trip is round-trip transportation, driver gratuity, five hours of gaming time, current casino bonus, and dinner stop "on your own" at The Cracker Barrel in Niagara Falls en route home. more

Bees boys #2 in state
Byron-Bergen lost in the state boy's soccer finals last season, but has picked right up where they left off with a 3-0 shutout over rival Holley to improve their record this season to 8-0-1. more

Blue Devils swamp Rangers
It was Sister Act II as Brockport won nine events enroute to a 109-72 win over Spencerport in high school girl's swimming. Arianna and Sabrina Hill won three individual events while Hali and Tessa Snow also collected three wins during the meet. more

Lakeside hosts final round of golf
There is still time for one more round of golf. Lakeside's Final Round of Golf will be held on Columbus Day, October 13, at Twin Hills Golf Course on West Ridge Road in Spencerport. more

Rangers trounce Olympia
Spencerport received goals from six different players on their way to a 7-0 whitewash over Greece Olympia in high school girl's soccer. more

Ravens complete successful season
The Churchville-Chili Ravens U16 Division 2 Girl's Travel Soccer team just finished their summer soccer season with a record of 11-1-0 and took first place in their division. more

Spartans beat Blue Devils
Brockport had only four offensive plays in the first quarter and their offense had the ball for less than seven minutes in the first half as they lost to Gates Chili 21-0 in high school football. more
