Brockport consolidates fire company operations
For the past 125 years, the Brockport Fire Department has had five companies chartered under the laws of New York state. Within the next month, the companies will consolidate their internal operating structure - the physical buildings and location of apparatus will not be affected by the consolidation. more

On Saturday, September 9 more than 600 motorcycles entered the village during the sixth annual “Operation Patriot.” Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn led the procession. They came to pay their respects to those lost on September 11, 2001 while at the same time honoring those that continue to serve. more

Kleen Brite Labs fire ruled arson
On September 9, at about 6:31 p.m., the Brockport Fire and Police Departments responded to 100 Fair Street, the property formerly occupied by Kleen Brite Laboratories, for a reported structure fire. more

Ledgedale Airport seeks rezoning
The owners of Ledgedale Airport say they have no specific businesses in mind but they came before the Town of Sweden board requesting changes to zoning from residential to light industrial and residential to airport on close to 40 acres surrounding the Colby Street airstrip. more

Local apple crop best on recent record
Bob King of the Cornell Cooperative Extension said the local apple crop may be one of the best on recent record in terms of quality and quantity for the Rochester region. "The overall crop is rated excellent and we expect a consistent and favorable season throughout the fall," he said. more

Public transportation options for students

The Orleans Transit Service, Inc. (OTS) and Brockport Student Government has launched a new service for Brockport students and staff seeking to ease their commute with expanded service including a new commuter route from Albion to Brockport. more

Nicole Sercu, who grew up playing on the playgrounds in Hamlin, approached Town of Hamlin officials with the idea of getting a group of concerned citizens together to work on playground improvements. more

Sweden moves forward with eminent domain process
By a unanimous vote, officials in the Town of Sweden passed a resolution to move ahead with forcing a property owner to sell land in order to make way for sidewalks, bike paths and a turning lane for a Lowe's store. more

Wailing sirens no longer sole alert to emergencies
For most fire districts, the use of a siren is more for the benefit of the community and for nostalgia rather than as a way to alert firemen and EMS officials to a fire or other emergency. Over the past 20 years, firefighters’ equipment has moved rapidly forward from the scanners that would sit on a table in the corner of a fireman’s house and required volunteers to be within listening range at all times. more

On August 19, the Hamlin Recreation Department held a "Junk Jamboree." The event was a community garage sale that brought in 26 individuals selling a wide variety of items on the Hamlin Town Hall grounds. more

Historical items donated
Kay Tegelaar and her mother, Dora Naylor Jones, and her aunt, Bernice Naylor Clarke made a donation to the Town of Ogden's historical collection. Sisters Dora Jones and Bernice Clarke were born in Ogden in 1914 and 1916, respectively. more

Riga bicentennial committee forming to plan 2009 celebration
An informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 20 at 7 p.m. regarding the formation of a Riga Bicentennial Committee. more

A local high school student could win a trip
to Washington, DC and $30,000 scholarship

Commander Richard Gross of the Monroe County Council of the Veterans of Foreign Wars said this year's VFW and Ladies Auxiliary "Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition" is underway. High school students can compete in the annual audio essay competition and win scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C. more

B-B graduates recognized
Four Byron-Bergen graduates were recognized at the third annual Alumni Hall of Fame Recognition Induction Ceremony on September 8. Inductees recognized were James Glazier, Class of 1974; Neil Gallivan, Class of 1982; Susan Penepent, Class of 1984; and Dennis Burke, Class of 1985. more

B-B student to collect data via hot air balloon
Byron-Bergen High School instructor Briana Wood is facilitating a trip with her physics students on Tuesday, September 19, (weather permitting) in a hot air balloon. On the 19th, one of Wood's physics students will go up in a hot air balloon provided by "Balloons Over Letchworth" and will measure muon flux rates at altitudes up to 3,000 feet. more

GCC inaugurates Alumni Hall of Fame
Genesee Community College's College Foundation has created its first ever Alumni Hall of Fame to recognize those alumni who have achieved outstanding success and made a lasting impact on their communities. more

Parent University's focus is on bullying
The Spencerport School District's Family Support Center will sponsor a series of three presentations on bullying in October. Each workshop will cost $3 for district residents and $6 for non-residents. more

Remembering 9/11
Third graders in Deb Koehler's class in Holley were only three years old when the events of 9/11 happened, so they had plenty of questions when Albion Firefighter Sarah Miesner, who is also their student teacher, wore her uniform to class on September 11. more

Roberts Wesleyan and Northeastern Seminary
to host historic gathering and symposium

Northeastern Seminary and Roberts Wesleyan College host its 2006 McCown Symposium: Reconnecting the Dots - Methodism, Past, Present & Future. This historic pan-Methodist gathering will take place October 1 and 2 at the college, bringing together six major branches of the Methodist Church. more

Greece Athena hosted the Hilton Cadets and started the game off with the first score of an eight yard pass from QB Robbie Zappia to Brian Carmody (kick failed) in the first quarter. more

Head Volleyball Coach Jim Vanderhoof recently passed the 300 win plateau after the Raiders defeated Embry Riddle College, Florida on August 26 at the Houghton Invitational Tournament. more

Senior setter Jake Swanson handed out 44 assists and Cal Palumbo knocked down 18 kills to lead Hilton to a 25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 25-13 victory over Webster-Thomas in boy's volleyball. more
