The surrender ceremony aboard the U.S.S. Battleship Missouri, Tokyo Bay: September 2, 1945, ended this war after Japan’s acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration, August 14, 1945. more

Church celebrates with open house
On Sunday, September 23, the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Spencerport welcomes singer and songwriter Bill Welch to participate in the service. Welch, who is from Rochester, is renowned for his spiritually uplifting music. more

With the fall season beginning next week, area residents will begin looking in earnest for events and entertainment unique to this time of year, including finding their way through mazes in corn fields which provide more than a tasty treat. more

Churchville appoints fire marshal
Scott Flagler is the new Fire Marshal/Inspector for the Village of Churchville. Village Mayor Nancy Steedman made the appointment during the September 10 meeting of the village board of trustees. more

Dunbar sewers to be extended
A $24,000 local implementation grant from the Lake Ontario Coastal Initiative allows for sanitary sewers to be extended to reach seven homes along the south side of Dunbar Road in the Town of Parma. Assistance from this grant allocation and the Parma Town Board allowed the financing for these homeowners to fall below the bonding threshold of the Office of the State Comptrollers for this public health construction project. more

Golf tournament to benefit infant
Madison Klafehn, daughter of Lisa and Dustin Klafehn of Churchville, will be the recipient of funds raised during a September 24 golf tournament. more

Lions 'Peace Poster' contest underway
The Lions Club of Chili is sponsoring the 2007-2008 Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Children ages 11 through 13 by November 15, attending the two participating schools in this community, Gates-Chili Middle and St. Pius X RC schools can submit one original poster designed according to the contest rules. more

Meeting's public forum still focused on wind towers
HAMLIN - The Wind Tower Committee (WTC) has been disbanded, the reports and findings have been turned over to an attorney, but the topic of conversation at the recent Hamlin Town Board meeting continues to be wind turbine focused. more

Mikey's visits bring comfort and joy to Beikirch
When Mikey walks into Lakeside Beikirch Care Center in Brockport, there are always smiles, greetings, and hugs for the 110 pound Goldendoodle. He is a gentle giant therapy dog who saunters down the hallways and into resident's rooms with his "mom," Dianne Hickerson. more

Monroe County is celebrating National 4-H Week with a series of informational sessions across the county. Current families, volunteers, and members will be joining the discussions to share their experience with potential new members. more

Riga board approves water line extension
Members of the Riga Town Board began their September 11 meeting about 40 minutes late so that they could attend a 9/11 memorial service hosted by the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department. Ceremonies were held outside the Fire Hall on East Buffalo Street and included recordings of patriotic music, speeches and prayers by fire department personnel. more

Spencerport United Methodist Church welcomes new pastor
The Spencerport United Methodist Church appointed Reverend Bernadette Smith in July to serve the congregation and extend her ministry to this community at large. "Pastor Bunny" (as she likes to be called) and her husband Earl are native Buffalonians but settled into the parsonage on Ballard Avenue in Spencerport, along with their grandson, Markus Allen. more

Bear sighting
A bear was spotted in the town of Parma on Moul Road on Friday, September 7 around 2 p.m. in front of the home of Maureen Grisdale, where she took its picture. It walked around checking where it had gotten into the garbage the day before and checked around the mailbox area. more

Breast cancer walk planned
This year 180,510 Americans will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Almost 41,000 will die from this disease. Monroe County is the second highest cancer diagnosis in New York state. It is also the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death. more

Eagle Scout project planning
Brockport Eagle Scout candidate Trevor Speer has been meeting with the Sweden Town Board regarding his proposal to construct a picnic pavilion at the Sweden Town Park on Redman Road. more

Winds knock down tree at The White Church
Strong wind gusts during a thunderstorm Tuesday evening, September 11 downed a large maple tree near the First Congregational Church (The White Church) in Spencerport. more

Board reschedules report on school survey
The Board of Education has decided that in order to allocate the appropriate amount of time, and allow for interaction with the community that the presentation of survey results will be rescheduled as a stand alone public forum rather than a part of a regularly scheduled board meeting. more

Churchville-Chili Leo Club plans school dance
The Churchville-Chili Leo Club is sponsoring a Welcome Back to School Dance on Friday, September 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Junior High Commons for seventh, eighth and ninth graders. Pizza and soda will be available. more

College credit programs available for students
Spencerport High School offers students the opportunity to earn college credit while taking select high school courses through a dual credit program with Monroe Community College. The dual credit program is open to all students enrolled in select Spencerport High School courses regardless of age or grade level. more

Holley fourth grader recognized for helping family in need
Holley fourth-grader Angela Pinson was recognized at the September 10 Board of Education meeting with a Soaring to New Heights Award for helping a family who lost its home and belongings in a fire. more

Join the parade
Organizations from communities served by the Spencerport Central School District are invited to participate in the Homecoming Parade, Saturday, September 29 at 12:45 p.m. Marchers line up at the Spencerport Firemen's Park by the canal. The parade ends at the varsity football stadium. more

NYS DMV Online Learner's Permit Testing
now offered at Hilton High School

Students are able to take their Learner's Permit test online at Hilton High School this fall for the first time, according to Hilton Central School District Community Education Director Barbara Carder. more

Rachel's Challenge program planned for Sept. 21
Spencerport parents can learn ways to encourage children to improve behavior and attitudes during a free presentation on Friday, September 21 at 7 p.m. A speaker from Rachel's Challenge will conduct a session with parents and community leaders in the Spencerport High School Performing Arts Center. more

Roberts Wesleyan College opens Golisano Library
At a ribbon cutting ceremony, Roberts Wesleyan College officially opened its $11 million B. Thomas Golisano Library, declaring it a "library for the 21st century." Located at the academic heart of the campus, the two-story, 43,000-square-foot library incorporates unique design elements, is built with the environment top-of-mind, and fosters a spirit of learning. It is also available to the public. more

Spencerport CSD chooses new administrator
On September 20, Bonnie Seaburn succeeds Dr. Bernadette Skobjak as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction at Spencerport Schools. Skobjak announced her retirement last spring. more

Brannan leads Devils to first win
Victoria Brannan finished first in consecutive events and Jami Barber and Emma Snow took the top two spots in the 50-yard freestyle as Brockport defeated Batavia 99-76 in girls swimming. more

Brothers invited to Masters Tournament
Spencerport brothers Joe Persia and Dan Persia earned spots in the Rochester Junior Grand Prix Masters Tournament. The Masters Tournament is by invitation only based on points earned through summer weekend tournaments. more

Collier scores five TDs for C-C
Senior running back Averin Collier scored three first-half touchdowns and five overall as Churchville-Chili outscored a pesky Spencerport squad 42-20. more

DiMartino wins 9th horseshoe pitching title
Mike DiMartino of Churchville won his ninth NYS Horseshoe pitching title in Waterloo, New York over Labor Day Weekend. more

Golden Eagles now 4-0
Brockport made a first-half goal from leading scorer Jill Neidlinger stand out as they defeated Nazareth for the first time in three seasons 1-0. Since that game, the Golden Eagles added a 5-0 victory over Hilbert College and had yet to allow a goal against over the first four games. more

Kendall wins on Brightley tally
Kendall sophomore Paul Brightley converted the go-ahead goal with just nine minutes remaining to lead Kendall to a 2-1 win over visiting Byron-Bergen in boys soccer. It marked the first victory for the Eagles over the Bees in three seasons. more

Local swim clubs join together
Sharks and Eagles Aquatic Sports (SEAS) and Westside WAVE Swim Club (WSSC) have merged and are recruiting new swimmers. more
