Churchville-Chili transportation department moves to new facility
The Churchville-Chili Transportation Department will move into its new facility the week of February 19, February break week. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the radio system, computers and phones will be moved from the old facility, attached to the high school, to the new building, located at the corner of Westside Drive and Fairbanks Road, according to district officials. more

Diaz cuts workforce
Seven employees were laid off recently by Diaz Chemical in Holley. Chad Ebbs, 23, is one of the workers affected by the lay-off. He had been employed with Diaz for more than two years, he said. more

Holley Industrial Park may get new tenant
Holley’s Industrial Park may become home to Precision Packaging Products, Inc. of Greece, a firm that uses plastic from recycled pop bottles to manufacture packaging for both food and non-food retail products. more

Local food shelves feel effects of economic downturn

Plans underway for Max's Mardi Gras
Brockport's fourth annual Max's Mardi Gras will be held Saturday, April 27. The parade will begin at the corner of Main and Market Streets at 10 a.m., go south on Main Street and west on Adams Street. The festival will begin at Special Olympics Park on the SUNY campus when the parade reaches that site and will continue until about 2 p.m. more

Brockport Wegmans Department Heads
contribute to search and rescue group
After the attack on the United States on September 11, 2001, the department heads at Brockport Wegmans decided to donate the money set aside for their Family Christmas Party. They wanted to donate the funds to an organization that supported the country during this tragedy. more

Chili supervisor addresses township
Town of Chili Supervisor Steve Hendershott will be giving the annual State of the Town Address on Wednesday, February 27, at 7 p.m. The speech will take place at Chili Town Hall, located at 3333 Chili Avenue. The public is invited to attend. more

Community Chorus performs at Spencerport church
We're Gonna Put On A Show, a concert of seasons and show tunes, will be presented by the Spencerport Community Chorus on Saturday, March 2 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 3 at 3 p.m. Both concerts will be held at the First Congregational Church (the Historic White Church), 65 Church Street, Spencerport. Concerts are free with donations accepted. Receptions will follow both concerts in the Fellowship Hall. more

GED Classes at the Community Free Library

Police make arrest in bank robbery
Gary A. Masters, 35, of Villager Apartments, Brockport was arrested February 16 following a robbery at Chase Bank in Brockport on February 15, according to Brockport Police. more

Registration scheduled for Girl Scout Summer Camp
The Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley invites all girls, ages 5-17, to participate in its summer program. Girls do not need to be currently registered in Girl Scouts to sign up for summer camp. more

Repair work in progress
Crews are at work repairing what the NYS Canal Corp. refers to as "Culvert 54" just west of Adams Basin. According to Division Canal Engineer Dave Martin, there are two culverts which carry Salmon Creek under the Erie Canal. more

State grant to Monroe County to help make snowmobiling safer
Monroe County has secured grant funding of the snowmobile trail and maintenance program. The funding is from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and is derived from snowmobile registration fees. more

Sweden appoints highway superintendent
A new highway superintendent has been appointed in the Town of Sweden. During a special meeting February 19, Councilman Rob Carges proposed a resolution naming Frederick E. Perrine as the town's new highway superintendent. The motion was passed unanimously and Perrine will begin his duties with the town on March 11. more

Volunteers needed for Daffodil Days
In one of the American Cancer Society's oldest community events, hundreds of volunteers will mobilize to take orders and deliver daffodils during the week of April 1 in support of the society's programs in this community. more

Vroom Road water construction to begin
Vroom Road water construction will begin the first week of March, Ogden Supervisor Gay Lenhard said. The project was awarded to Maxim Construction at the regular town board meeting on Wednesday, February 13. more

New York State Assemblyman Charlie Nesbitt (R,C-Albion) believes Governor George Pataki's economic stimulus plan would create new jobs and spur the economic recovery of Western New York and the entire state in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. more

Churchville-Chili Senior High School presents "Into the Woods"
The Stephen Sondheim musical "Into the Woods" will be performed at 7:30 p.m. February 28, March 1 and 2 at the Churchville-Chili Senior High School. The story follows the lives of many fairy tale characters as their paths cross when they journey into the woods to seek their wishes. Kelly Walsh is the director of the production and senior Daniel Ketchum is assistant director. more

The Hilton School District will survey all parents of current K-12 students; staff members; and students in grades 4-12 in March 2002 to assess satisfaction in a number of areas. more

Jenna Lee Barber has been busy with more than books while becoming salutatorian in Holley High's graduating class of 2002. In the course of accumulating a 98.26 cumulative average, the senior, who aspires to Broadway, also has achieved on the school stage and sports fields. more

Regional Science Olympiad held in Brockport
Three hundred and twenty-five area high school students came to SUNY Brockport on Saturday, February 9, to compete in the regional 2002 High School Science Olympiad. The students demonstrated their knowledge of chemical reactions, mapping, rocks and minerals, ornithology, simple machines, mineralogy, human disease, earth processes, and the experimental method. more

Baseball Clinic offered by Riga Recreation
The Town of Riga Recreation Department and the Churchville Youth Association have joined efforts to offer a five week Baseball Clinic. This non-competitive instructional program teaches the fundamentals of the games. more

Blue Devils advance to semi's
Colby Jones and Brandon Dries scored first period goals and that would be all the Brockport Blue Devils would need in a 4-1 victory over Webster in Sectional Hockey playoff action February 16. more

Cummings scores 26 points in loss
Byron-Bergen's Ryan Cummings led all scorers with 26 points, but it wasn't enough as Holley defeated the Bees 56-52 in the final regular season boy's basketball game for both schools. more

Iroquois National Wildlife refuge seeks volunteers
Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in Alabama and Shelby are looking for volunteers to help meet the growing demands of public use on refuges. The refuge, a stopover point for thousands of migrating ducks, geese and other birds, receives approximately 50,000 people per year. more

Iroquois refuge readies for spring migration
Soon hundreds of thousands of birds will be winging northward again with many visiting Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in Alabama and Shelby. The refuge is a major stopover point for ducks, geese, raptors and many migratory songbirds en route to their nesting grounds. For some, Iroquois is their final destination, but for most, the refuge is a resting, feeding and staging area before continuing on to Canada or the Arctic. more

Byron-Bergen girl's basketball head coach Tom Sherwood was named Class CCC Coach of the Year at a Section Five Luncheon held February 14 at the Four Points Sheraton in Rochester. more
