Hilton Lion receives state honor
Lion Jim Allardice of the Hilton Lions Club will receive the 2002 Past District Governors' Leadership Award at the Opening Ceremony of the State Lions Convention, May 3 through 5 in Binghamton. Allardice was selected from among 1,800 Lions club members in the seven county district in western New York. Eleven other Lions will also receive the honor, representing eleven other districts from across the state. more

Stroll for Strong Kids set for June 1
Following his birth on May 12, 2000, Jack Henry Zyra spent the first week of his life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Strong Memorial Hospital. He was born with several anomalies that required the expertise of the physicians and nurses at the hospital. So when his parents, Karen and Darren Zyra, learned of the Stroll for Strong Kids last spring they were eager to participate. more

Cropwalkers work to stop hunger
On Sunday, May 5, at 1 p.m. a group of people will depart from the Spencerport United Methodist Church to walk the canal path to Adams Basin and back. This is not just an afternoon stroll, these walkers have a mission: to fight world hunger. more

Environmentally-friendly lawn care workshop offered in Ogden
The Ogden Farmers' Library, 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport, in cooperation with Cornell Cooperative Extension, is hosting a free workshop on Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. in the library meeting room. more

Quite a shower!
It was a big surprise when Willis and Carrie Heise returned to their home on the corner of Kenmor and Countyline Road in Morton April 10. A geyser had erupted from a water line near the home, shooting a stream of water over the two-story house. more

Sidewalk replacement continues in Spencerport
The Village of Spencerport will be continuing their Sidewalk Replacement Program this spring. The sections of sidewalk that will be replaced are on Amity Street, Clark Street and Lyell Avenue. more

Star Party set for Northampton Park
Members of the Astronomy Section of the Rochester Academy of Science Astronomy Club invite people of all ages to the park to view the planets and deep sky objects through the members' telescopes. See galaxies, star clusters, and gaseous nebulae. Come early for views of the planets, stay late for best views of dim deep sky objects. more

Spencerport Swing Choir to perform
"There Ought to be Music in Everyone's Home" is the upbeat theme for the 2002 Barbershop Show by The Chorus of the Genesee. The Webster-based chorus take the stage on Saturday, May 11, 8 p.m., at the Theater on the Ridge, Rochester. more

Biotechnology Education and Training funding sought
"We need to invest in the emerging biotechnology/biomedical industry to create jobs at various skill levels," Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester/Chili/Wheatland) said. "I'm working to secure $15 million for the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Center for Biotechnology Education and Training - a proposed facility to provide academic and career training in biotechnology." more

Career and Tech Center students
help with fish stocking project

More than 35,000 fish now have a new house, thanks to welding students and their teacher Mike Sorrentino at the BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education Center in Spencerport. The students built three 20' x 5' x 5' pens to house 25,000 Chinook King Salmon and 10,000 Steelhead Trout. more

Conference encourages students
to think about careers in teaching
A conference held on the campus of SUNY Brockport last month brought together more than 300 students from 31 area schools in a five-county area for the second-annual Think About Teaching Conference. The all-day conference was open to all students, though the goal was to encourage students who are underrepresented in the educational field to consider careers in education. more

Roberts Wesleyan residence hall
to be named for Donald and Maxine Davison
A 200-bed residence hall, opened last fall and known generically as North Hall this school year, was named April 23 in honor of Donald F. and Maxine B. Davison, former owners of the Ogden Telephone Company and longtime supporters of Roberts Wesleyan College. more

Townsend named NYACCE Teacher of the Year
Greece Adult Literacy teacher and Hilton resident Jeanne Townsend has touched the lives of over one thousand students from more than 80 countries in the 26 years that she has been an ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) instructor. In recognition of her efforts, Jeanne has been selected as one of five NYACCE teachers of the year. more

Tutors and students have new center for learning
If a student is suspended from school, even for a day, a school district is bound by New York state law to provide alternate instruction for two hours a day for high school and middle school students and 60 minutes a day for elementary students. This is almost always done with tutors. more

It was dancing to the swinging sounds of the Hilton High School Jazz Band for students from Hilton High School, members of the National Honor Society, and residents at the Hilton East Senior Residence in Hilton on April 23. more

Bright Raven gymnasts participated in the Lilac Invitational held at the ESL Sports Center April 13-14. more

Hilton cheerleaders complete stellar year
The Hilton Varsity Cheerleaders had an outstanding year, taking many first place awards and a couple of Grand Championships. The year started out with a trip to Niagara Falls, Canada to participate in the Festival of Lights Competition. more

Local archers compete at Archery Competition
The New York State Indoor Archery Competition proved successful for youths and adults from Creekwood Archery, again this year. A local delegation of 20 shooters captured medals and trophies representing the many hours of practice prior to the tournament at the Seneca Falls Chiropractic College. more

Sports Dome remains down
The Sport Dome on West Ridge Road, just west of Manitou Road, was blown down by the severe winds in Mach and remains like a shroud over the indoor driving range. more

Wasson, Murray lead Brockport
Senior Nate Wasson tossed a four-hit complete game and Jeremy Murray drove in the game's only run in the first inning as Brockport defeated Churchville-Chili 1-0 April 23 at home. more

Wright scores twice as Blue Devils win
Senior Jenna Wright scored two runs while Kellie Wright and Erin Briener each knocked in a run as Brockport defeated Hilton 5-4 on a sunny but chilly April 23. more
