Society's Bicentennial Farm Award

Brown's Berry Patch and Orchard Dale Fruit Farms in Waterport and Colby Homestead Farms in Ogden were named as two 2006 Bicentennial Farms, for over 200 years of continuous family ownership. The eleven 2006 Bicentennial Farm families were honored as part of the 175th Annual Agricultural Forum of the New York State Agricultural Society, held January 11 in Syracuse. more

Brockport fire chief sworn in
Village of Brockport Mayor Mort Wexler swore in the 42nd Chief of the Brockport Fire Department and the first chief of the newly reorganized department. Timothy J. Rombaut, 39, who ran unopposed for the post, was elected by the membership in December, confirmed by the village board and took his oath of office before his personnel, family, friends and town officials from Sweden and Clarkson. more

Hilton Post Office offers passport services at special Sunday event
The first phase of the Western Hemisphere Initiative went into effect January 23, making it necessary for air travelers to have a passport when flying in and out of the United States and the Postal Service is making it easier for families to apply for a passport at an upcoming passport event. more

It was definitely puppy love
It was a little chaotic, crowded and noisy at the Town of Sweden Dog Pound on White Road on Saturday, January 20 what with two penned dogs barking constantly, a crowded room, six puppies and their mother being held by various people, girl scouts from Troop #976, who helped care for the puppies, and two newspaper and other photographers trying to get pictures to capture the moment. more

Ogden's Citizens Police Academy begins in February
The Town of Ogden Police Department offers their Citizens Police Academy on Wednesday evenings at the Ogden Community Center, 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport, beginning the end of February 2007. The class will meet for approximately eight weeks and there is no cost to the participants. more

Sweden officials happy with early budget reports
Department heads were commended by Sweden Town Board officials at their January 23 meeting for their ability to bring budgets in under projected figures, specifically in the Senior Center and the Recreation Center programs. more

Mardi Gras Monte Carlo Night proceeds
would help trolley depot project along

As the photo shows, the Spencerport Trolley Depot is now settled on the southeast bank of the Erie Canal. It’s hoped that come the 2007 canal boat and bicycle traffic season, the depot will be ready to open as a visitor center as well as a destination site for area residents. more

The Orleans County Sheriff's Office, in cooperation with all county fire departments, would like to encourage residents in all areas of the county to adopt a fire hydrant. more

Sheriff issues snow plow warning
Now that significant snow has returned to the area, the Orleans County Sheriff's Office cautions residents and snow removal contractors that it is against the law to plow snow into public streets or roadways. more

Ogden Republicans accepting letters of intent
The Ogden Republican Nomination Committee is accepting letters of intent and resumes for the 2007 elections. Supervisor Gay Lenhard, Town Clerk Lynn Bianchi, Ogden Town Justice Michael Schiano, Councilman Mal Perry and Councilman David Feeney are all up for re-election and anticipate running as incumbents. more

Basketball and Blues team up at Genesee Community College
As part of its 40th anniversary celebrations, Genesee Community College is planning two events on Saturday, February 17; the alumni student-athletes will be recognized during the between-game intermissions of the women's and men's basketball games against Erie Community College followed by a live performance by Eric Bibb, a internationally renowned blues-folk musician, which will take place in the Stuart Steiner Theatre. more

Children learn about food safety with Chef Patti
It was Safe Cooking Week at the Schoolhouse of Brockport, 1375 Transit Way. The ‘Bugs and Critters’ were busy learning about safe shopping, cooking, serving and storage of foods during this life skill week. Chef Patti Battista, a certified personal chef, offered cooking tips and demonstrated food presentation. more

Tax help and safe driving class offered through H-P Seniors group
The Hilton-Parma Senior Center offers two programs for seniors within the community. AARP trained tax preparers will be on hand to prepare state and federal income taxes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. There is no charge for this service, but appointments are necessary and can be scheduled by calling the Hilton Recreation Department at 392-9030. more

Gymnast team wins in Florida
Bright Raven gymnasts traveled to Coral Springs, Florida to participate in the Junior Orange Bowl on January 12-14. At this international competition, the Level 5 team captured first place with Nicole Bell of Gates taking first all around in the senior division with a score of 34.40. more

Karate student’s unselfish act earns certificate
For the past two years, Maxim DellaPosta, 10, grew his hair long. He became aware of a non-profit organization, Locks of Love, that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. more

Kendall-Hamlin U19 Babe Ruth Baseball try-outs Feb. 12
Try-outs have been set for U19 Baseball team sponsored jointly by the Hamlin and Kendall Recreation Departments. Try-outs are Monday, February 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Kendall Elementary School Gym, 1932 Kendall Road. Additional dates may be scheduled if needed. more

Local winners in K of C free throw contest advance
Over 30 Hilton-area youngsters competed at the local level of the annual Knights of Columbus Free-throw contest held at Merton Williams Junior High School. Boys and girls ages 10-14 shoot 15 free throws each and the winners in each age category advance to the next level of competition. more

MacEwan, Ortiz lead Blue Devils
It was Senior Day and Brockport finished its home schedule in style with a 95-83 boy's swimming victory over Eastridge to improve their record to 7-1. Mike MacEwan and Ryan Ortiz combined for four individual first place finishes and three relay team firsts to pace the Blue Devils. more
