Brockport district residents to vote on school bus garage proposal
Brockport school district residents will vote on a $5.3 million bus garage proposal on January 24. The proposal includes the purchase of approximately 110 acres of land on Redman Road and the construction of an eight-bay drive-through bus garage. The bus garage would feature a staff meeting room, offices and a lounge. Included in the cost are new furnishings, equipment and machinery. Enough parking is planned at the site to accommodate the entire 100-plus bus fleet. more

Churchville budget passed by board
The village of Churchville Board of Trustees has passed the $3,028,130 budget for 2001-2002, and for the fifth year in a row there will be no tax increase for village residents. more

Frozen food warehouse expansion raises noise concerns
A proposal to expand the Allied Frozen Food facility on State Street seems to have the general support of Brockport officials and residents, although noise issues have been raised by several residents. more

Monroe County unveils youth smoking cessation campaign
Monroe County Executive Jack Doyle has launched a major new initiative to reduce youth smoking by encouraging the 35 percent of the county's teenagers who smoke to quit. more

New Year's baby celebrates her 108th birthday
Reminiscing with a television reporter about seeing the Empire State Building being constructed, seeing the Titanic and being on television were some of the highlights of the day for Emma Stark on the occasion of her 108th birthday on New Year's Day 2001. more

Plans to nearly double size of Parma Park underway
As Steven Fowler, director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Parma, puts it, "The Parma Town Hall Park is the jewel of the town." That jewel is about to get much bigger. Plans to add another 56 acres to the 70-acre park are underway and have already been unanimously approved by the town board. more

Senate tax cuts to trim heating bills
Senator George D. Maziarz (R-C, North Tonawanda) joined Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno and members of the Senate Majority to unveil a plan to slash energy taxes by nearly a half-billion dollars, lowering energy costs and helping homeowners and businesses slash their heat bills by encouraging energy-saving improvements. more

Sweden growth remains slow in 2000
There may be big development plans ahead in the Town of Sweden, but new construction remained typically slow for the year 2000. more

Sweden looks at first phase costs of new park
The Town of Sweden is taking a look at the estimated cost of the development of the first phase of the town’s new 150-acre park on Redman Road. Prepared by the town’s engineers, Phase I could include a skate park, BMX track, two soccer fields, a pond, two parking lots and the extension of the access road, at an estimated cost of $550,000. more

Sweden residents to receive reassessments next month
New property assessments will be mailed to all Town of Sweden property owners on February 9. The town is in the midst of its first reassessment since 1970. Instead of the fractional market value at which Sweden properties are currently assessed, all properties will be assessed at 100 percent of market value. more

Hamlin water rates going up
Town of Hamlin residents will notice an increase in water bills due to a rate hike by the Monroe County Water Authority. more

Lakeside welcomes New Year's Baby
Joshua Ingham made his way into the world on January 2, 2001 at 6:21 a.m., making him the first baby to be born at Lakeside Health System for the new year. more

River Otter restoration project
The Monroe County Parks Department will offer an informational program on the River Otter Restoration Project Thursday, January 25, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Black Creek Park's Woodside Lodge. more

District holds School Nurse Appreciation Day
The scene is the same in the five nurses' offices at Brockport Central School District: students stopping in to get first aid, ask a question, take their medication, or just talk, sometimes all at once. There to help are well-trained, sensitive professionals - the school nurses. In addition to their credentials as registered nurses, these professionals are experts at another skill - multi-tasking. more

Hilton HS January exams scheduled
Hilton High School will offer a variety of examinations for students from Tuesday, January 23 through Friday, January 26. During these days, Regents, State Proficiencies, RCT's, as well as local mid-term and final examinations will take place. more

Holley sixth-graders take a trip back to the Middle Ages
It may have been the new millennium (or nearly the new millennium, depending on who you ask), but in the Holley sixth-grade classrooms last month, it looked more like the Middle Ages. Students were combing and spinning their own wool, weaving fabric, making sachets, playing scribes, and constructing their own "chain mail," which is the protective body armor that was used in battle. more

Holley welcomes new school business administrator
The Holley Central School District has hired Theodore J. Welch as its school business administrator. He replaces Cathleen Milliman, who took a position as assistant superintendent for business and personnel with the Marcus Whitman Central School District. more

For seniors who have given up driving, whether it be for health reasons or financial constraints, finding transportation can be difficult – especially so for seniors who live in suburban and rural areas that have little or no public transportation. more

Blue Devils skaters trounce Batavia
Jimmy Baker and Brian Abrams each had three-point games and freshman Jarrod Minor scored his first high school goal as the Brockport Blue Devils ran over Batavia 8-2 January 3 at SUNY Brockport. more

Brockport wins on Nichols free throw
Senior Mike Nichols made a free throw with 1.2 seconds left to break a 60-60 tie and give the Brockport Blue Devils a 61-60 win over Hilton January 3. more

Flag football offered in Ogden Bears program
There is a new addition for the Ogden Bears of the Monroe County Pop Warner Football League for the 2001 season as flag football will be added to the tackle program. more

Saints win first divisional game
The Churchville-Chili Saints hockey team spotted Spencerport a one-goal lead before roaring back with three unanswered goals enroute to a 4-2 win January 2 at Scottsville Arena. more
