Brockport couple proves the power of friendship
Two years ago, Kelly and Chad Collins were fairly typical twenty-something newlyweds. The two shared a Brockport apartment while Kelly worked on her psychology degree at SUNY Brockport and Chad maintained a full-time spot on the college campus grounds crew. Any spare time after work or classes was spent watching television or taking in an occasional movie. more

Brockport planning requests actions on village subdivision proposal
Brockport Planning Board Chairman Tom Hare has requested that the village take several steps regarding a subdivision proposal for the south side of East Avenue. The proposal, in the conceptual design phase, drew a crowd of over 70 people to a public hearing last week. more

Brockport police salaries
As the Village of Brockport moves into the final weeks of its annual budget process, one area of concern is the cost of operating the village police force. It’s not the first time Brockport has struggled with the issue. In the early 1990s, several officers were laid off to reign in costs when the village was faced with double-digit tax rate increases. Although no such crises looms at this time, the Brockport village board is taking a hard look at how to control expenses in a department that has grown back to its pre-lay-off strength. more

Churchville trustee saluted as she retires
Churchville village trustees honored and thanked fellow Trustee Marian Gowan, who is retiring after more than 10 years of service to the village board, at her final meeting Monday. more

Clarendon Historical Society receives grants for two projects
The Clarendon Historical Society was recently notified by GO ART that a grant request had been approved for the year 2001 to fund two separate projects. In the past the Society has received grant awards that have funded five other projects that were completed and benefited the CHS museum and community. more

Hamlin church moves to new location
Living Hope Assembly of God has moved to its new location at 2168 Roosevelt Highway in the Town of Hamlin. "We are thrilled to finally have a facility of our very own," says Pastor Paul Heidt, senior pastor of the church. more

Spencerport family brings West Avenue jewel back to life
The courtship of Andy and Janelle Cole was not your typical romance. Andy, an electrical engineer, had purchased a triplex in Charlotte and was trying to make it habitable during evenings and weekends. Janelle, a Gates Chili school teacher, was wined and dined by Andy, not by candlelight and soft music, but by hanging drywall and installing new flooring. more

To combat the fastest growing killer of young people in America today, Brockport Schools are implementing an international suicide prevention program called the Yellow Ribbon Program. more

Brockport incumbents declare candidacy
Three Brockport Village Board members, the mayor and two trustees, have declared their intention to seek re-election in the June 19 village election. Mayor Mary Ann Thorpe and trustees James Whipple and Norman Knapp will form the Citizen's Party in their re-election bid. Village elections are non-partisan. more

Brockport Post Office joins Family Wellness Center
in raising diabetes awareness
Brockport Postmaster Donna Chichester presented a poster of the new commemorative diabetes stamp to the Daisy Marquis Jones Family Wellness Center on March 16. The diabetes stamp, designed by artist James Steinberg, includes two elements associated with diabetes, research and testing. more

Brockport school budget vote set for May 15
Brockport School District residents will vote on the 2001-2002 school budget on May 15. The annual public budget presentation will be held two weeks before the vote, on May 1 at 7 p.m. at the district office building. more

Brockport's village tax rate to drop
Property owners in the Village of Brockport will pay less village taxes this year. As the annual budget public hearing was set for Wednesday, April 4, Treasurer Scott Rightmyer announced the tax rate would drop one dollar per thousand - from $113.78 per thousand in the 2000-2001 budget to $112.78 per thousand in the 2001-2002 budget. more

Churchville voters pick one incumbent, one newcomer for village board
A higher than average 146 voters turned out in the Village of Churchville last week to elect two of three candidates to the board of trustees. more

Clarkson Republicans name fall slate
At the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Clarkson Republican Committee, the following persons were nominated as the Republican candidates for this fall's elections. All candidates were interviewed and determined to be qualified for the positions they will hold if elected. more

Clarkson supervisor will force Republican primary
In a surprise move on March 15, the Clarkson Republican Committee passed over incumbent supervisor Paul Kimball to support Christa Filipowicz as the party's candidate in the November election. Filipowicz is currently a town councilwoman. more

Hilton Board of Education holds budget presentation
The Hilton Central School District Board of Education has called a special meeting Monday, March 26, at 7 p.m. to hear a presentation of the proposed 2001-02 budget by Assistant Superintendent for Business Steven Ayers. more

Historical Committee seeks Ogden photos
The Ogden Historical Committee, appointed by the Ogden Town Board in early 2000, has decided to enter into an agreement with Arcadia Publishing of Dover, New Hampshire to produce a book on Ogden-Spencerport. more

Hunter safety course scheduled
Instructors certified by the Department of Environmental Conservation will conduct a Hunter Safety Program April 17, 19 and 21, at Northstar Sportsman's Club. Those interested in attending may register in person at the Clerk's Office, Town of Parma, located at 1300 Hilton Parma Corners Road during office hours. more

Workshop on Dying with Dignity

The Monroe County Office for the Aging will present a videotaped series on "Dying with Dignity" on four consecutive Thursdays starting April 5 at the Rotary Camp Cabin at Camp Eastman. Barclay School students celebrate new gymnasium
Barclay Elementary School students no longer need to be bused to neighboring schools for physical education classes - their new gymnasium is complete. On March 9 students and staff celebrated the grand opening of the gym. The construction was part of the $19.1 million capital project approved by voters in 1998. more

Brockport school district takes "hit list" seriously
Three Brockport sixth graders were suspended for this past week for compiling a "hit list" of seven fellow students. The note, which did not contain specific threats, according to Middle School Principal Ann Sweeting, was turned in to a bus driver Thursday morning, March 15. Sweeting called the Brockport Police Department as soon as she was notified. more

New York State has released the 1999-2000 report cards for the district as a whole as well as each individual school within the Churchville-Chili Central School District. more

Churchville-Chili students explore new frontiers
Churchville-Chili Middle School students learned about outer space and the deep sea during a weeklong Project ADEPT ( A Diversified Enrichment Program for the Talented) workshop earlier this month. more

Spencerport High School graduating one of the largest classes ever
Spencerport High School's 2001 graduating class is the largest in many years, with more than 300 students expected to graduate on June 22. Last year, 280 students participated in the graduation ceremony. Because of the large number of graduates, the high school must limit the number of tickets provided for family and guests. more


In Seniors:

Chili Senior Center programs slated
The Chili Senior Center will be offering a trip to Cooperstown, NY on Wednesday, May 16. The trip will include transportation via a deluxe motorcoach, admission to the Baseball Hall of Fame, admission to the Farmers' Museum and a lunch buffet at Otesaga Hotel. The cost is $40 per Chili resident. Registration begins April 2. Non-residents may register, space permitting, beginning April 30 for $56. For information, call the center at 889-6185. more

Spencerport teams qualify for scholar awards
Six Spencerport winter athletic teams qualified for the NYSPHSAA Team Scholar Athlete Award during the Winter 2000-2001 season. In order to qualify, a team must have a team grade point average of 90 percent or above. more
