Aid freeze would hit taxes,
school programs, school board group reports
School districts would be forced to slash programs and staff positions even while raising tax levies by an average of 12 percent if the 2002-03 Executive Budget education financing recommendations were enacted, according to a new survey by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA). more

Brockport approves the hiring of a police officer
Following a long and convoluted discussion at the March 18 Brockport Village Board meeting, board members decided to hire an additional police officer for the Brockport Police Department. "It’s not truly an additional officer," Police Chief Daniel Varrenti explained. more

Brockport compiles capital improvement plan
Spurred on by conversations with state and federal representatives, Village of Brockport officials have begun the process of delving into the village's needs and working on a capital improvement plan to address those needs. more

Brockport forms Local Development Corporation
The formation of a Local Development Corporation and/or an Industrial Development Agency was approved to help Brockport village obtain tax-exempt status. more

Brockport sets public budget hearing
Knowing the village is facing a "tough budget year," according to Mayor Josephine Matela and trustees, board members have scheduled a public information hearing. more

Genesee County celebrates 200th
March 30 with day of events
One upon a time Genesee County's proud reach encompassed every square mile of land from the west bank of the Genesee River to the western boundary of New York State. more

Girl Scouts to hold Summer Camp information sessions
The Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley invites all girls, ages 5-17, to participate in its fun-filled summer program. Girls do not need to be currently registered in Girls Scouts to sign up for summer camp. more

Park Ridge Auxiliary names board officers
The Park Ridge Auxiliary has appointed its slate of officers for 2002. They are: Sharlene Penna, president; Mary Jo D'Angelo, first vice president; Mary Stroh, second vice president; Irene Perevich, recording secretary; Lena Calabrese, corresponding secretary; Norma Clement, treasurer and Loretta Welch, group coordinator. more

Remediation action plan outlined for Holley
A public meeting was held March 20 in the Holley Elementary School to address concerns and receive public comment on the Department of Environmental Conservation’s plan to clean up soil and groundwater supplies in and around the Diaz Chemical plant. The meeting was not in relation to the January 5 chemical spill in which 75 gallons of 2-chloro-6 fluorophenol were released into the air. more

United Way of Greater Rochester announces the appointment of Lucine M. Kauffman as Regional Coordinator for Genesee and Eastern Orleans Counties. As regional coordinator, she will be responsible for coordinating the fundraising efforts of the annual appeal, training volunteers, educating the community on the good things United Way is doing, and working with volunteer boards to identify and address community needs. more

WTC, national recession affect New York's 2002 job growth
After an unparalleled three-year period of peacetime growth of 2.2 percent or higher in New York State, private sector job growth declined in 2001 due to lingering effects of the World Trade Center attacks and the national recession. more

Labyrinth returns to Spencerport
If you didn't get a chance to travel the labyrinth in October, a return visit is scheduled during Holy Week. Labyrinth will be open at the Spencerport United Methodist Church at 32 Amity Street, Spencerport, on the evenings of March 25 and 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, March 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. more

Musical tribute scheduled
Roberts Wesleyan College will host a musical tribute to its president, William Crothers, and his wife, Rilla. Dr. and Mrs. Crothers have served Roberts Wesleyan as president and first lady since 1981; they will retire this May. more

New leadership chosen in Holley
In a town that has been divided by tension over a local chemical company, residents in the Village of Holley have chosen a new mayor to lead them for the next two years. more

With a "key deadline" in the state legislature's budget review process already missed, State Assembly Republican Leader John J. Faso (R-Kinderhook) recently called for the convening of the budget conference committee "to get on track and stay on track." more

for the blind expanded and improved
Congressman John J. LaFalce (D-29, NY) announced that, as a result of a $4 million appropriation from Congress, effective March 1, 2002, the National Federation of the Blind's (NFB) NEWSLINE - an audio newspaper service - is available anywhere in the United States free of charge. more

Ogden Democratic Committee restored after a quarter century
Monroe County Democratic Party Chairman Ted O'Brien has announced the rebirth of the Ogden Democratic Committee after over a quarter century of dormancy. "Our momentum is rising," O'Brien said in a prepared press release. "The formation of the Ogden Democratic Committee is especially significant following the Party's recent takeover of three County Legislature seats and Judge Valentino's State Supreme Court victory. We are on the move." more

targeted for signage improvements
The state Department of Transportation has completed its review of the intersection of Route 104 and Route 272 (Monroe-Orleans County Line Road) in the Town of Clarkson and recommended the installation of new, more visible signage. more

BOCES 2 GED student receives high honors in Albany
A dream brought Heng Leng to America, but persistence and dedication got her to where she is today. Leng left Cambodia on a boat bound for America with her husband and two children during the revolution of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge Army in April 1975. The couple did not fully know what they were going to do once they got here. more

High School Printing and Graphic Arts
students visit area print industries
Hilton High School students in teacher Ron Hindmarch's Technology classes visited several area printing industries in March. The day of shadowing, tours and lunch was sponsored by the Printing and Imaging Association of New York State, of which Hindmarch is a member and officer. more

McQuaid Jesuit High School is seeking nominations to its five-week summer Higher Achievement Program (HAP) for students who have completed seventh grade. Nomination forms are available at most public and private junior high schools in the county and city. more

win Exemplary First-Year Teacher Awards
Two Roberts Wesleyan College students have won Exemplary First-Year Teacher Awards from the Rochester Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. Kristen Bartnick and Danielle Smith are participants in the Urban Teachers of Tomorrow program, a partnership between Roberts Wesleyan and the Rochester City School District. more

Spencerport High School students
donate money to PAVE
Spencerport High School students donated $1,000 to PAVE, People Against Violence Everywhere, as part of the "Reach for Peace" mural dedication ceremony on March 5. Randy Everett of PAVE received the check on behalf of the organization. The peace mural is painted in the main hallway in the high school. more

Two new principals named at Spencerport schools
Dan Milgate, assistant principal at Spencerport High School, has been appointed principal of the new elementary school, and Todd Yunker, assistant principal for Munn and Bernabi Elementary Schools, has been named the new principal of Munn School. The Spencerport Board of Education approved the appointments at its March 12 meeting. more

Buffalo Bisons Girls Hockey team on their way to nationals
The Buffalo Bisons Girls Hockey team won the state championship played the weekend of March 16 and will be competing in the USA Hockey National Championships which will be held in Anchorage, Alaska starting April 3. more

Try outs are scheduled during the month of April for youth interested in joining the Monroe County Youth Hockey league. more
