Bird of Prey Week April 12-21
During spring raptor migration and Bird of Prey Week, Braddock Bay Park, in Greece, hosts one of the largest raptor migrations in the world. Each spring a "hawk" counter is perched on the Braddock Bay Park platform from March through the end of May. Last spring he identified and counted 69,118 hawks, eagles, and falcons migrating along the Lake Ontario shoreline. more

BISCO Brockport Arts Festival
to collaborate with Lakeside on Duck Derby
Under the leadership of Michael Murphy, president of the Brockport Integrated Services Community Organization (BISCO), planning has begun for the 2002 Annual Brockport Summer Arts Festival which will take place on August 10 and 11 in the Village of Brockport. more

Saying the Brockport Village Board should compensate him for his December censure, Trustee Peter DeToy said he intends to sue. more

Brockport school budget to reflect an increase
On May 21 voters in the Brockport Central School District will be asked to ratify a $52.9 million budget. The figure reflects a one (1) percent increase over the current year’s budget. more

Chemical-free lawn care workshop offered April 13
The Town of Parma, in cooperation with Cornell Cooperative Extension, is hosting a workshop at the Parma Town Hall, 1300 Hilton Parma Corners Road, April 13 at 10 a.m. for residents who are interested in lawn care that minimizes fertilizers and pesticides. Experts from Great Lawns/Great Lakes program will be the presenters for this program. more

English cottage gardening
The Garden Club of Brockport, at its last meeting in the historic Morgan Manning House, enjoyed a slide-presentation about English cottage gardening given by Mark Dunham, a local gardener and landscape designer. more

Hamlin supervisor says radio tower is long way off
Lately, Hamlin residents have been sounding off, showing their disdain for the proposal to erect a 340-foot radio tower on a parcel of land that is directly southwest of 65 Wiler Road. "As far as I am concerned, WMJQ has to show us that there is a definite benefit to the town of Hamlin," said Hamlin Supervisor Austin Warner. more

Hamlin Wetlands Nature Park
could happen this summer
If Bill Jennejahn has his way, his dream of restoring some 50 acres of wooded wetlands behind the VFW Post on Lake Road in Hamlin will become reality this summer. more

International Art Show to be held April 12-14
The 4th annual IACC International Art Show will showcase art from Italy and other countries by renowned artists such as Domenico Fera, Maria Luisa Belcastro, Andrea Valere and Franco Aguggiaro. more

Nature lectures at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge
Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Alabama and Shelby announced their schedule from nature programs to be held at the refuge during the month of April. This series of "Focus on…" programs, presented in partnership with the Buffalo Chapter of the Audubon Society, will be offered each Saturday at 2 p.m. at the refuge headquarters at 1101 Casey Road in Alabama. All programs are free and no reservations are required. more

Orleans County Youth Board plans banquet
The Orleans County Youth Board hosts the 20th Annual Youth Recognition Banquet Monday, May 13. This event is an opportunity to thank select individuals for their service to the community. more

Spencerport's Fire District consolidation targeted for June 1
After several months of discussion, analysis and consideration, the Village of Spencerport and the Towns of Ogden and Parma have determined that a consolidation of fire service responsibilities between the current Ogden-Parma Fire District and the Village of Spencerport is in the best interest of town and village residents. more

SUNY Brockport makes donation to fire department
The Brockport Fire Department is the recipient of a donation from SUNY Brockport’s President Paul Yu. more

Sweden names community center recreation director
The new recreation director for the Sweden Community Center will have his hands full juggling all of the tasks necessary to run the new center. James Nealon was appointed by the Sweden Town Board and will begin his duties April 8. more

The Bergen Business and Civic Association is celebrating the 200th Birthday of Genesee County and the 125th Birthday of the Village of Bergen by sponsoring two, $200 raffles on one ticket. more

Blue Star banners available
Ferris Goodridge Post 330 of the American Legion announced the availability of "Blue Star Banners" to be given, free of charge, to Ogden-Spencerport families who have a loved one serving in the Armed Forces of the United States during wartime. This includes activated members of the National Guard and Reserves. more

Free hearing screenings
in observance of the Noise Awareness Day
The Rochester Hearing and Speech Center (RHSC) will offer free hearing screenings on Wednesday, April 24 in its seventh year of participation in Noise Awareness Day. The league for the Hard of Hearing in New York City began the day as a way to bring attention to and educate the public about the relationship between noise and hearing loss. more

Girl Scouts salute leaders in April
The Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley will recognize adult volunteers at the 11th Annual Adult Recognition Gala at Waver's, 31 Paul Road, on Thursday, April 25, with a reception at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. and an awards presentation at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $20. The reservation deadline is April 20. more

Kids can learn the ABC's of fish hatchery
Just in time for trout season, pre-school children ages 3-5 can participate in the Parks Department's ABC's of the Fish Hatchery Program. Kids will learn about fish and Powder Mills Park's famous hatchery through Activities, Books and Crafts. This hands-on learning experience also includes a tour of the hatchery and an opportunity to cast a fishing line into the creek. more

to adopt proposed budget at April 9 meeting
According to district officials, Churchville-Chili Board of Education will adopt a proposed budget for the 2002-2003 school year at the board meeting on April 9 at 7 p.m. The board, with input from community residents, has been developing the proposed budget for the past several months. more

Churchville-Chili FIRST Team wins award
The Churchville-Chili GRR (Greater Rochester Robotics) Team brought home the Delphi "Driving Tomorrow's Technology" Award in the regional FIRST Robotics competition held March 21-23 in New York City. Nortel Networks has sponsored the C-C team since its beginning several years ago. The team is now preparing for the national competition at the Epcot Center in Florida April 25-27. more

Bright Raven Gymnastics Boys Team traveled to Syracuse March 23-24 to compete in the USA Gymnastics Compulsory State Championships. Each of the boys qualified for the State Championships by earning high all around scores in USAG sanctioned competitions held earlier in the season. more

Kendall wrestlers finish season 13-1
The Kendall Varsity wrestling team enjoyed another excellent season in 2001-2002. The Eagles won the Genesee-Region League Division II title, the Batavia Christmas Tournament team title, the LeRoy Tournament team championship and completed the season with a 13-1 win loss record. more

Local wrestlers featured in magazines
Wrestling brothers Craig and Brian Axford have now both been featured in Sport Karate magazine. Craig was featured in 2001 and Brian was featured in a 2002 issue. more

The Triple Cities International Karate Tournament was held on March 9 in Endicott. The Isshin Ryu Karate Academy of Hamlin sent a team of fighters that included members from Kishi Karate (from Rochester) as well as members from the S&S Fitness Gym Fight class. more
