Adams Basin canal liftbridge out of service until November 3
Area residents grow accustomed to travel delays caused by Erie Canal liftbridges being raised for boat traffic to pass. But if you live, travel through, go to church, or use business services in the hamlet of Adams Basin in Ogden, youll have a long wait for the Route 36 (Washington Street) canal bridge to be lowered from its current raised status. more

Its a rare occurrence that a home goes back to Habitat for Humanity once it has been constructed, but a home built in Clarkson in 1999 has recently been turned back to the organization. more

Local man raises mega-bucks for Diabetes research
Ross Vasbinder of Meadow Drive in Spencerport completed the Tour DeCure bicycle fundraiser on June 8. He has cycled in this fundraising event for the last ten years and this year he surpassed all other years collecting over $1,700. more
Relay for Life celebrates cancer survivors
As a crowd cheered them on, 68 cancer survivors walked the first lap in celebration of their victory over cancer at the 3rd annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Spencerport. The annual event raised more than $50,000 to support lifesaving research, as well as local education, advocacy and patient service programs. more

Summer reading program helps mark library's 50th
The Newman Riga Library celebrates its 50th anniversary with a summer reading program and activities. "Escape into Books" is the theme for the preschool, 6-12 year old and Young Adult programs which begin July 8 and ends August 8. more
Visiting giraffes
Amma and Chad are the names of the two visiting giraffes at the Seneca Park Zoo, according to representative of ELS Federal Credit Union, sponsors of the visit and a contest to give the animals temporary names. Out of over 970 entries submitted, Kristy Evans' proposed names were chosen as the winning names. The first runner-up, Jonathan Miller, submitted Stars and Stripes as his names, and the second runner-up, Julia LaJuett, of Hilton, submitted Ruby and Diamond as hers. more

Bicyclists to ride from Buffalo to Albany
More than 300 bicyclists from all over the United States will roll out of Buffalo, Sunday, July 7, for the fourth annual "Cycling the Erie Canal" bike event, July 7 through July 14. The event is organized by the New York Parks and Conservation Association (NYPCA), a statewide nonprofit organization. The 400-mile trek follows the Erie Canal along the Canalway Trail and scenic rural roads. more

Correction
Joyce Henry of the Oak Orchard Power Squadron advised of this correction to an article on boating safety classes which ran in the June 10 issues of Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald. The statement "To obtain an Operator's Certificate a person must complete a Boating Safety Course sponsored by a Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla" is incorrect. more

Kendall to offer summer recreation program
Kendall Central Schools will again offer a summer recreation program for five weeks from Wednesday, June 26 to Friday, August 2, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Kendall Elementary School. All Kendall students in grades K-6 (grade just completed) are eligible to participate. more
Motorcycle ride proceeds benefit LAI's Sensory Park
The Blue Knights motorcycle club will host the 2nd Annual Gus Schmidt Memorial Run on August 4. This ride benefits the Lifetime Assistance Sensory Park located in Clarkson off of Horizon Park Drive. more

State DOT to hold public meeting on Route 259 bridge replacement
The NYS Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting on June 17 at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Community Center at 59 Henry Street to collect input from local officials, property and business owners, and anybody who uses the Route 259 bridge over West Creek. more
State DOT to protect ground-nesting birds along parkway
The NYS DOT has adopted as an experiment, a modified mowing management schedule in two areas along the Lake Ontario State Parkway. Mowing along the meadow-like right-of-way in the vicinity of Lake Shore Road and Peter Smith Road will be deferred until September 2002 in an effort to protect many native ground nesting bird species. There are other experimental areas across the state. more

A free rabies clinic is scheduled at the Chili Community Center, 4400 Buffalo Road, North Chili, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 22. more

Hilton Village Park project receives needed funds
The Village of Hilton has been approved to receive $166,500 in funding for the Hilton Village Park project. The funding was made available under the Land & Water Conservation Fund, according to Senator George Maziarz (R-C North Tonawanda), and Assemblyman Charles Nesbitt (R,C-Albion). more

Brockport junior receives Clarkson University Leadership Award
Michael C. O'Laughlin, a junior at Brockport High School, received the Clarkson University High School Leadership Award at Brockport's Scholarship Reception and Awards Night on June 1. This award, which entitles him to a $36,000 scholarship over four years, is the highest honor at Clarkson University. It recognizes outstanding leadership qualities and academic promise. more

at area businesses, earn college credit
Holley students got a jump on their careers this year through the Career Education Internship Program (CEIP) at BOCES 2. They spent 108 hours in internships and earned college credit through in-class training on topics such as college preparation, career planning and goal setting. more
Teachers become art students
After a long day of teaching, a group of teachers at Hilton High School signed up for another class ... this time with their own students as teachers. "It's nice to have the kids come here after school to help you," School Social Worker Carol Cowey said. more
Tree planted in honor of Ryan Merritt
Hilton High School honored the memory of a student this week, who died in a tragic automobile accident last year, by planting a tree on school grounds. Ryan Merritt would have graduated with the Class of 2001. more

Pitch Hit & Run Team Championship Finals
Hamlin Recreation had two finalists in the Team Championship of the Pepsi Pitch Hit and Run contest. Zackery Coughlin competed at 7/8 level and Bobby Quick at the 13/14 level. To get to the Team Championships they had to win at the local and sectional level. more
Phouthavongsa second in state
Brockport High junior Tara Phouthavongsa, fighting bursitis in her knee, jumped 36 feet, 11 inches in the Class A Triple Jump to take second place in the New York State Public High School Track and Field Meet at Rush Henrietta June 8-9. more
Registration open for Saints summer baseball camp
Registration is open for the Churchville-Chili Saints Summer Baseball Camp for those 8 to 18 years. The camp will focus on baseball skills such as throwing, fielding, pitching, hitting and defensive and offensive play. Coaches of the high school baseball program, as well as area baseball coaches and players, will teach the program. more

U-17 boys premier team wins state cup
The New York State West Youth Soccer Association State Cup finals were held in West Seneca, NY on June 1 and 2. Teams from the Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse and Binghamton districts competed for the New York State West Championship. Boys and girls from U-12 to U-19 compete for state titles each year. more
