Brockport chiefs gather information
for specialized Employee Assistance Program

In time of stress and everyday emotional toll, Brockport's Chief of Police Daniel Varrenti recommends his officers and Fire Chief Gregory Wing's personnel have access to a specialized employee assistance program (EAP). The village presently offers EAP to its employees but both Wing and Varrenti say their personnel may require specialized personnel to help with their emotional concerns. more

Deer and car season: a bad combination
Each year, car collisions with deer account for more than 200 human and 1.4 million deer fatalities. The period of October through December is the highest season for the accidents, since it's a time for both wandering deer and holiday travelers. more

For the birds
Thousands of volunteer citizen-scientists across our region this winter will be keeping an eye on bird feeders for signs of West Nile virus and the impact of acid rain and global warming on birds. more

Hilton Apple Fest has many winners
The Hilton Apple Fest Apple Pie Contest first place prize of $100 for the adult division was won by Kim Vitelli of Hamlin. Kim used Red Delicious and Cortlands to make the prize winning pie. Second place prize of $50 went to a Hilton resident, Melissa Morgante, who used 20 Ounce apples for her pie. The third place prize of $25 was won by Sherry Farrell of Hilton, who also used 20 Ounce apples. more

Kendall graduate to make solo debut
with Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra

Class of '99 Kendall graduate Jillian Pritchard will make her solo debut with the Rochester Philharmonic on November 3 in the Eastman Theater at 2 p.m. as part of a Casual Sunday Matinee Series concert highlighting some of the Eastman School of Music's leading musicians. more

New Roberts president looks
to build on school's recent successes

It has been nearly six months since John A. Martin assumed the helm at Roberts Wesleyan College following 20 years of a heralded presidency by William Crothers. Following two decades of amazing growth and prosperity at the local Christian college, maybe the best compliment available for Martin would be that things don't change. more

No decisions made yet on Brockport's dispatch issues
There have been three meetings and more than seven hours spent but no decision has been reached on what to do with Brockport's dispatching unit. more

Onion crop fetches premium prices this season
Because of a wet spring and several frosts followed by a hot and dry summer, onion production for New York is expected to be 150,000 tons, down 28 percent from last year's crop of 210,000 tons. For western New York, onion growers are averaging anywhere from 25 percent to 50 percent less per acre when compared to last year's crop. Onion yields in New York can vary considerably from year to year and from field to field. Average yields range from 15 to 18 tons per acre but can reach 25 tons or more per acre when growing conditions are favorable. more

Spencerport resident wins Toastmasters Contest
Spencerport resident Karl Scheible won the Area 5 Contest of Toastmasters International for the oral evaluation he presented as part of the Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest Saturday, October 12, at Ezzy's Restaurant on Buffalo Road. Joan Fox, of Henrietta, won for the humorous speech she presented. more

Sweden residents will see tax increase
According to Sweden Supervisor Nat O. Lester III, no services have been cut in the proposed 2003 town budget, but costs for services have increased. Town appropriations will rise to $3,700,305 in 2003 compared to $3,044,857 in 2002. more

Law enforcement officials in the Village of Brockport were kept busy the past quarter, according to reports filed by Police Chief Daniel Varrenti. more

Brockport's 'Red-tagged' house re-opened
A house at 141 Holley Street in Brockport village that was closed for various code violations in September was re-opened, Code Enforcement Officer Scott Zarnstorff reported at the October 21 village board meeting. more

'George Burns' entertains in Brockport
Saturday night, October 19, area residents attended the dinner show at SUNY Brockport banquet room. Alan DeValerio gave his George Burns standup humorous routine of the late comedian. The event was a Brockport Kiwanis Club fundraiser with proceeds going towards various children's activities in the area. more

New pastor appointed
Pastor Kathy Iannucci was formally appointed to the Parma Free Methodist Church. more

On September 16, 2002, Boy Scout Troop 53 presented scouts with merit badges earned over the summer. The boys worked very hard on their requirements both at Massaweepie and on their own. more

Spencerport Canal Days Committee gives to the community
Every few years when the surplus builds up in the Spencerport Canal Days treasury, the Committee agrees to donate some of their funds to a worthwhile cause or causes in the community. more

Beers honored by alma mater
Morris Beers, professor and chairperson of the Department of Education and Human Development at SUNY Brockport, received the University of Western Connecticut's Centennial Award of Excellence. The award was given to 80 outstanding alumni to celebrate distinguished alumni's outstanding achievements and contributions to society during the University's centennial year. more

to hold information sessions

Empire State College, of the State University of New York, will hold public information sessions about its undergraduate programs on Monday, November 4 at 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, November 13 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, November 16 at 11 a.m.; Thursday, November 21 at 5:30 p.m.; and Tuesday, November 26 at 7:30 p.m. at its Genesee Valley Center, 1475 Winton Road North, Rochester. more

Frozen pies new to CC Fruit Sale
The annual Churchville Chili Senior High School Band Fruit Sale got underway on Wednesday, October 16. This year the band is using a Rochester based company featuring fresh produce this year from Florida, California, New York and Hawaii. more

Pennies add up - students purchase memorial bricks
It was an unusual bank deposit - 30,000 pennies. Brockport's Fire Chief Gregory Wing reported that 257 students from Barclay Middle School collected the 30,000 pennies and donated them to the Memorial Monument. more

Spencerport's new elementary school named
The Spencerport Board of Education has selected Canal View Elementary School as the name for the new school currently under construction. Board members made the choice based on a recommendation made by a board-appointed committee of community members. The committee considered many options, including the names of prominent local citizens, and made its recommendation based on the area's geographic and historic legacy. more

Seniors and high-risk residents urged to get flu shot
Public health officials are urging seniors and those residents at high-risk of complications from the flu to obtain a flu shot as soon as possible. Through November 1, flu shots will be administered only to residents aged 65 or older, and to those who have a greater risk of complications from the flu including people with chronic health problems such as heart or lung disease, diabetes, or asthma. more
