A day on the ice - February 18, 2003
A great day for ice fishing - Though the schools' Winter Recess started off with a six inch accumulation of snow on President's Day, February 17, the second day of the week-long vacation was a sunny delight with temperatures in the high 20s. Many took advantage of the free time and first 'warm' temperatures in more than two weeks to try their luck at ice fishing. more

Area residents' art work featured at Arts Center/Old Forge
Two new exhibits opened at the Arts Center/Old Forge featuring Ruth and Wilhelm Haas, of Spencerport, who participate in a show titled "Together in Art." Ruth Haas will exhibit oil landscapes. Her favorite scenes are of the Adirondacks, the East Coast, and the NY Finger Lakes region. Wilhelm Haas will exhibit wood sculptures in the trompe-l'oeil style. more

Brockport commends its snow removal warriors
When the phone rang Thursday, February 13, at 3:40 a.m., Brockport Village Trustee Norman Knapp answered, got dressed and rode along with the department of public works team as they plowed, salted and cleared the roadways. Making the roads safe, and passable, for morning commuters is a task not to be taken lightly, Knapp said at the village board meeting. more

Canal wall reconstruction causes vibrations
The canal wall reconstruction which has been underway in the Village of Brockport for the past few weeks is causing some shaking, rattling and rolling, according to business owners. more

College Alumni donate chair to Seymour Library
At the February meeting of the Seymour Library Board, George Rich, president of the Brockport Alumni Association, presented a Boston Rocker to the library in memory of Fannie Barrier Williams. more

Cornell Cooperative Extension and 4H Clubs promote horse programs
The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County sponsors 4-H clubs in the area, an organization for all youth ages 5 to 18. The professional knowledge, information and research comes from Cornell University and passed on to every county in New York state through the Cornell Cooperative Extension. more

"Music for Manhattan" concerts scheduled
The Cosgrove Middle School Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble from Spencerport will be traveling to lower Manhattan in March 2003 to rehearse and perform with music students at Intermediate School 89 (IS 89). more

Nominees sought for Women of Distinction program
State Senator George D. Maziarz (R,C-North Tonawanda) invites local residents to nominate friends, co-workers, and neighborhood leaders whose outstanding work on behalf of our communities makes them deserving of special recognition by the State Senate as a New York "Woman of Distinction." more

Ogden plans for new highway headquarters
Ogden residents who attended the February 5 and February 12 meetings concerning the building of a new highway facility heard details of the proposed structure. The building will be 7,100 square feet and includes the garage, offices, restrooms and locker rooms. more

Bullying and harassment problems in schools and communities are the focus of a two-day training program offered through the Brockport Central School District. more

Spencerport sets timeline for decisions on 2003-04 school budget
Spencerport Superintendent Phillip W. Langton is preparing a list of potential program reductions to present to the Spencerport School Board at its February 25 meeting. The list is a result of the governor's state budget proposal, which calls for a $2.1 million cut in state aid for Spencerport Schools. more

Troop 90 scout earns Eagle rank
Boy Scout Troop 90 held a Court of Honor on January 21 to recognize Benjamin S. Meinhold for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Friends and family were in attendance at the First Baptist Church in Chili to see Meinhold receive the Boys Scouts' highest award. more

Soil clean up in Parma
A view to the west of the earth removal going on at the corner of Manitou and Frisbee Hill Road. According to Project Manager Jon F. Heerkens, an engineering geologist, "The officials in Parma could not make a decision (about soil remediation on a Parma site), so the contaminated soil is going to the Mill Seat Landfill at a price of about four times what remediation would have cost. more

Area schools participate in Odyssey of the Mind Regional
Local students in elementary through secondary school will compete in the Region 14 Odyssey of the Mind Regional Competition on Saturday, March 1 at Canandaigua City School District. This event is the first in a series of competitions that will determine which teams will represent the state of New York at the Odyssey of the Mind 2003 World Finals at Iowa State University in May. more

B-B second graders send good cheer to marines in the middle east
Students in Mrs. Zambito's second grade class have been working on a very special writing project. They are sending letters of good cheer to United States Marines stationed in the Middle East. more

College-district partnership works on drug/alcohol awareness
The Brockport Central School District is teaming up with SUNY Brockport and the community to help deal with the issue of drug and alcohol abuse among young people, thanks to a $12,489 grant for the Healthy Campus Community Demonstration Project to help educate students about drug and alcohol abuse. more

to hold information sessions

Empire State College, of the State University of New York, will hold public information sessions about its undergraduate programs on Tuesday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, March 6 at 5:30 p.m.; Monday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m.; Monday, March 17 at noon; and Tuesday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m. at its Genesee Valley Center, 1475 Winton Road North, Rochester. more

Five school districts host college information night
A College Information Night on Thursday, March 20 for students in grades 8-11 and their families will help students prepare for the college admissions process. The program, to be held in the Brockport High School Auditorium, 40 Allen Street, from 7 to 9 p.m., is hosted by school counselors from the Brockport, Hilton, Holley, Kendall and Spencerport School Districts. more

The last day of January was a first for Cosgrove Middle School students, who began eating in their brand new, brightly lit cafeteria. The cafeteria is light and airy with one wall of windows. more

Scholarship offered in Greece
The Greece Branch of the American Association of University Women is offering a $250 scholarship to a graduating senior from Greece. The criteria for this award are that the applicant is planning to earn a bachelor's degree, be in the top 20 percent of her class with at least a 3.0 grade point average, and has demonstrated qualities which enhance the perception of women in leadership roles. more

School bus runs changed in revised transport plan
The Spencerport school board recently approved a revised transportation plan for the 2003-04 school year. The district currently uses a two-tier system, transporting high school and middle school students in one run, and elementary students in the second run. The new three-tier system will have high school students on the earliest bus run, middle school students on the second run, and elementary students on the third run. more

Students compete in Science Olympiad
More than 300 area high school students competed in the 2003 Regional High School Science Olympiad at SUNY Brockport on Saturday, February 8. The students demonstrated their knowledge of cell biology, chemical reactions, earth processes, fossils, genetics, human disease and nutrition, mapping, ornithology, polymers, simple machines, and the experimental method. more

Sweethearts at Sweden Senior Center
The Sweden Senior Center hosted a Valentine's party on February 14. One of the "senior couples" who participated was Bud and Stella DeTar, who came to the center for the party which included music, dancing, and a lunch featuring Chicken Cordon Bleu. more

B-B's Sherwood Coach of the Year
Byron-Bergen's girl's basketball coach, Tom Sherwood, was named Class CCC Coach of the Year at the Sectional Luncheon held February 13 at the Four Points Sheraton in Rochester. It is the second consecutive year he has won the award. more

Bright Raven gymnasts capture all around titles
Bright Raven Gymnastics Optional gymnasts traveled to Binghamton February 7-8 to compete in the I Love New York Cup held at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena and captured several all around titles. more

Clark leads Golden Eagles with 23 points
Senior forward Kristen Clark (Hilton/Hilton) led SUNY Brockport with 23 points in the Golden Eagles 74-69 win over Oneonta February 18. Clark scored 21 of her game-high 23 points in the second half. more

Lynch puts Cadets in semi-finals
"I took a look and nobody was open, so I just shot. Coach told us before the game that he had a pretty good glove hand so I shot to the blocker pad side." Greece Arcadia transfer Adam Lynch took a pass from Joe Patarino, skated down the left wing and scored to give the Hilton Cadets a 2-1 high school hockey victory over Penfield in the sectional playoffs and a trip to the Class A semi-finals for the first time in the team's 15 year history. more
