Brockport author nominated for National Book Award
The National Book Foundation named William Heyen, SUNY Brockport professor of English and poet emeritus, a finalist for a 2004 National Book Award for his book of poetry, Shoah Train (Etruscan Press). The book is a collection of more than 70 poems Heyen has written on the topic of the Holocaust over the last dozen years. Shoah is the Hebrew word for annihilation. more

Brockport Kiwanians and BUM players present murder mystery
Brockport Kiwanis Club's Mystery Theatre presents "Mask Murder at Mack's," an original by Gary Thomas and the "BUM" (Brockport United Methodist) Players. Class on identity theft aims to reduce number of victims
The statistics issued by the Federal Trade Commission are staggering when it comes to victims of identity crimes -- in the last five years more than 27.3 million Americans were victims. The fraud loss to those victims totaled $50 billion and the out-of-pocket expenses incurred by the individual consumers/victims of those crimes accounted for an additional $5 billion. more

Gates and Ogden courts to receive grants
Two justice courts in Monroe County have been awarded funding grants under New York State's Justice Court Assistance Program. The justice court in the Town of Gates will receive $1,020 and the justice court in the Town of Ogden will receive $2,000. This funding will be used to purchase equipment needed to facilitate their operations. more

Work begins on Parma Monument of Remembrance
The Town of Parma has begun a major renovation project to the Veteran's Monument at Parma Town Hall. This flagstone designed structure located in front of the Town Hall building was constructed 29 years ago, serves as the main pole for the U.S. flag, and is utilized for Parma's municipal memorial services. more

Apple Fest helpers
The Hamlin Youth Group worked at the Hilton Apple Fest as the "clean-up" crew. The Hamlin Youth Group is contracted by the Hilton Apple Fest Committee to keep the grounds area clean and recycle the pop cans for that weekend. more

Public meeting scheduled to discuss Holley-Murray building plans
Holley and Murray may be two separate entities but they are all one community, Town of Murray Supervisor Hank Lehning said. And toward that end, the two municipalities are collaborating on a project to construct a municipal building that would house both branches of government. more

School walking program dates set
Registration for the Walk for Exercise/Health Program will take place in the Spencerport Schools Volunteer Office at the Terry A. Taylor School, 399 Ogden Town Line Road on Friday, October 29 from 3 to 5 p.m. and again on November 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. Registrants should enter by the west door and follow the signs. more

Six people treated for illness due to malfunctioning heating unit
Brockport firefighters and Brockport's ambulances responded to 82 Holley Street in the Village of Brockport for an unknown odor in the residence making people sick, just past midnight on October 20. more

Website includes action group's activities
The Walk! Bike! Brockport! Action Group, a volunteer organization that formed last year to promote walking and biking within the three communities of Brockport, Sweden and Clarkson, has initiated a new website as a means of keeping the public informed about its activities. more

Because of the distribution of an unauthorized survey, Spencerport's Cosgrove school has suspended the FACTS program. FACTS is an abstinence based health education program geared toward sixth-grade students. more

Two candidates vie for BOCES 2 superintendent position
Dr. Gregory C. Geer, Byron-Bergen superintendent, and Dr. Christopher B. Manaseri, Wheatland-Chili superintendent, are the top candidates for the Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES superintendent position. more

Brockport had the better of the scoring chances early, but undefeated Pittsford-Mendon came back to convert their chances for a 4-0 victory in boys soccer. more

Golden Eagles defeat ranked Ithaca
After dropping both meetings between the two schools last season, including in the NCAA playoffs, Brockport's Anthony Mariani blocked a 42-yard field goal attempt in the final minute to help the Golden Eagles hang on to a 21-20 victory over previously nationally ranked Ithaca. more

Local athletes train with top USA gymnastic coaches
Bright Raven Gymnastics was selected for the fifth year in a row to be the site for two Regional Gymnastics Clinics. The event opened on Friday, October 15 with Working Together for Nationals where former Level 9 and 10 Junior Olympic USA Gymnastics regional and national qualifiers were invited to train together with top coaches. more

Ogden Bears cheerleaders earn trophies
On Saturday, October 9, the Western New York Pop Warner tournament was held at the Blue Cross Arena. All three of the competitive-level teams from the Ogden Bears, from Spencerport, came ready to put on their best possible performance. more

Raiders sweep individual honors at Harry F. Anderson Invitational
On October 16, the Roberts Wesleyan cross-country teams ran their final home invitational of the year. This invitational proved to be a good day for both the men and women from Roberts. more

Saints sweep three events
Jessica Belnap took first to lead a sweep in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke and Erin Emrich did the same in the 500-yard freestyle as Churchville-Chili defeated Hilton 92-75 in girls swimming on senior night. more

Smith's hat trick leads Bees
Freshman Jessica Smith netted a hat trick to lead Byron-Bergen to a 4-0 girls soccer victory over Oakfield-Alabama in the final home game for nine seniors. more

Teams compete for Chil-E Bowl trophy
The 18th Annual Chil-E Bowl games were played on Thursday, October 7 and Friday, October 8 at Gates Chili High School. This annual event has the boys and girls varsity soccer teams from Gates Chili and Churchville-Chili competing for the coveted Chil-E Bowl trophy. more
