Congress has approved $1 million for the redevelopment of Big Ridge Road and $2 million for the redevelopment of Mill Road. The funds were included in the Fiscal Year 2005 Transportation Appropriations bill which passed Congress before Thanksgiving, according to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. more

'Do Not Call' law bars telemarketing calls to cell phones
As cell phones receive an increasing number of telemarketing calls, the New York State Consumer Protection Board reminds consumers that the "Do Not Call" Telemarketing Registry also protects cellular telephones from unwanted sales calls. more

French and Indian War Commission enacted
Governor George E. Pataki has signed into law legislation creating the New York State French and Indian War 250th Anniversary Commemoration Commission to promote the 250th anniversary of the French and Indian War in New York, which will take place between the years 2005 and 2010. The bill was sponsored by State Senator George D. Maziarz (R-C, North Tonawanda). more

Lions starting new foundation
At a recent meeting of the Hilton Lions Club, Past District Governor Neil Newman of Hamlin explained a new state wide foundation that the Lions have created. The Lions Camp Badger Foundation is to build an endowment for the Lions Camp Badger for future financial security and the needs of the camp. more

Ricardo Jordan knew the way to his wife's heart would be through her stomach, but now his cooking has area Mexican food lovers very happy, too. Jordan and his wife, Donna Heiler, opened Chilango's, an intimate and authentic Mexican restaurant in the Village Woods Commons at 42 Nichols Street (Rt. 31 behind McDonald's). more

National Trust provides grant to Brockport Presbyterian Church
The First Presbyterian Church of Brockport has been awarded a $2,500 matching grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation's John E. Streb Preservation Services Fund for New York. The grant funds will be used to survey the condition of the windows and exterior masonry of the historic (1853) church. more

New Twig Association officers chosen
The Lakeside Memorial Hospital Twig Association is pleased to announce the new officers of the Lakeside Memorial Hospital Twig Association of the 2004-06 term have been chosen. Each new officer was elected at their annual September meeting, and each will serve a two-year term for the association. more

The Orleans County Chamber of Commerce seeks photographs to represent Orleans County for use in various publications, including the Chamber's 2005 Membership and Community Directory and various tourism materials. more

Regional architecture firm to design
apartment-style housing at SUNY Brockport

Plans are underway for new student housing on the SUNY College at Brockport campus. According to Interim President Dr. John B. Clark, "We are very excited about our 200-student apartment-style housing project. As SUNY Brockport grows in popularity, the demand for quality housing also increases. This new construction will help meet the growing demand." more

Riga officials discuss county proposal
The October 27 meeting that took place with Monroe County officials over proposed changes to the Mill Seat Landfill will likely be on the agenda for the Town of Riga on December 13. more

Skateboarders to be required to wear helmets
New Yorkers under the age of 14 who ride skateboards will be required to wear safety helmets. The requirements put in place by a new law are the same as those currently required for children who ride bicycles and use in-line skates. more

Spencerport Schools capital reserve fund vote December 7
Approval for the creation of a capital reserve fund for the Spencerport Central School District is being put before voters on Tuesday, December 7 when they go to the polls. A Capital Reserve Fund would be used to pay the local share of future facility construction and renovations. more

The Seymour Library will soon unveil the new entrance to their Children's Room's Story Tower. The Friends of Seymour Library provided the funds to create this addition fashioned by local artist Mary Beth Dolan. more

Girl Scouts clean up cemetery
On Veterans Day, girls from Hilton Girl Scout troops 444 and 194 used their day off from school to enhance the veterans section at Riverside Cemetery. They cleaned the grass away from about 120 flat headstones which had been made barely visible by the growth. more

Murals bring history alive
World history, from dinosaurs to the digital age, is starting to come alive on the walls of Spencerport's Cosgrove Middle School. As part of a two-year project, students, teachers and volunteers have been painting murals throughout the building representing a history timeline. more

District budget advisory committee volunteers sought

Members of the home school group H.I.S. Leah delivered 33 sets of fleece hats and scarves to the Open Door Mission on November 16. The items are to be given to the homeless people who need them. more

Northwood Elementary School's Family Book Club, FIRST (Families Invited to Read and Share Together) has received a $1,000 reading grant from the Greece Target store to promote a love of reading and to encourage families to read together according to FIRST facilitator and founder, parent Dorothy Distefano. more

Holley students in Anne Smith's fifth-grade class held their own school-wide election in November giving their fellow students an opportunity to learn about the process of registering to vote and casting their ballots on an actual voting machine. more

In recent karate black belt promotion tests held at the Gillam Grant Center in Byron-Bergen, Sensei Gina Wyffels and Sensei Jerry Ciriello were promoted to Yon-Dan (4th degree black belt). more

Blue Devils fall to Aquinas
After a scoreless first period, Aquinas scored two goals in the second period and two more in the third to defeat Brockport 4-1 and win their own Thanksgiving Hockey Tournament held at Lakeshore Rinks. more

Bright Raven Gymnastics wins big
On November 13 and 14, seventeen teams traveled from all over New York to participate in The NAWGJ Judges Cup, a gymnastics competition hosted jointly by the National Association of Women's Gymnastics Judges and Bright Raven Gymnastics. more

Pratt triple-double leads Rangers
Kacey Pratt scored the first triple-double of her varsity career to lead the Spencerport Rangers to a 57-50 victory over Hilton in the season opening girl's basketball game for both teams. more
