Riga-Churchville honor the past and look to the future

On April 28, the cobblestone building purchased and restored by the Town of Riga, and dedicated to former Riga Historian Ray C. Adams, was chosen as the main venue for the 2007 Joint Town of Riga/Village of Churchville Arbor Day Celebration. The restoration of this historic building earned it the 2006 Greater Churchville/Riga Chamber of Commerce Beautification Award. more

Area Lion elected to state office
Lion James Schiebel of the Hilton Lions Club was elected president of the state's Past District Governor's organization at the 84th annual Lions convention. There are 12 Lion districts across the state with about 600 local Lions Clubs. Each district is administered by a district governor. After this service, they may join the Past District Governors' organization which is primarily responsible for education and training. more

C-C grad performs for Disney Cruise Lines
Most people have their own dreams of Disney from visiting theme parks to an autograph from the famous mouse or Cinderella. For 2002 Churchville-Chili graduate Lani Toyama, the Disney dream was to perform, and she is living that dream singing, dancing and acting as a Mainstage Principal Entertainer for Disney Cruise Lines. more

Chamber's awards dinner honor locals
The Gates-Chili Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual community awards dinner at the Brook-Lea Country Club on Tuesday, May 22 with registration starting at 5:30 p.m. The dinner will honor individuals and organizations that have made a significant impact on the quality of life in the Gates and Chili community from civic beautification to outstanding citizen. more

Entries invited for Hilton Apple Fest amateur photo contest
The Hilton Apple Fest, scheduled for September 29 and 30, announces the theme for the 2007 Photo Contest is "Effects of Weather". The parameters are photos, shot anytime, which depict the effects of weather on people, property and activities which happens in western New York during any of the four seasons. more

Flying kites in the park
On Saturday, April 28 residents came together to participate in Hilton-Parma Recreation's first ever "Kites in the Park" celebration. Although rain was in the air, wind conditions were perfect and more than 300 participants enjoyed the afternoon. more

Former Spencerport resident publishes his life story
Entrepreneur Richard J. Schwartz, Sr. recounts what it was like growing up in the 1920s and ’30s, his military service and how he grew his business in an autobiography titled Confessions of an Old Geezer. more

Kendall board hears from constituents
on proposed MET tower regulations

Town of Kendall officials heard from residents on the town's proposal to authorize a maximum of four meteorological test towers (MET towers) be erected within the town limits. more

Kiwanis Club bids farewell to long-time member
The Kiwanis Club of Brockport will host a presentation by Rev. Sinnathamby Thevanesan, a long-time member and current vice president, who will be giving his last public presentation in Brockport. Thevanesan (Theva) is also pastor of Brockport United Methodist Church, and will be transferred to Amherst Christ United Methodist Church in Snyder, New York in June. more

Local businessman heads to Malawi
Jan Brewster, owner of Patriot Construction in Scottsville, left for an eight day trip to Malawi, Africa on May 1. Brewster is representing Salmon Creek Community Church, Scottsville, as part of a Missions Trip with World Vision. more

MCWA continues cleaning, lining program in Spencerport
Three phases of work under construction in the Village of Spencerport by a contractor hired by the Monroe County Water Authority are part of a project that involves cleaning and lining the unlined distribution water mains in the village systems, according to a press release from the MCWA. more

Spencerport Canal Days Car Show ready to roll again in July
Saturday, July 28 will be the day for the 17th Spencerport Canal Days Car Show. The annual show is one of the highlights of the Spencerport Canal Days. Last year over 250 cars were on display for the enjoyment of all involved and the hundreds of spectators that attended. more

Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum to open
It's been a long time coming, but on May 12 the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum will celebrate its grand opening. Thousands of volunteer hours and tens of thousands of dollars have gone into the project which was the vision of Bernie Cubitt, who was the chairman of the restoration project. more

Tree planting marks Arbor Day in Brockport
About 60 volunteers, including residents, elementary students, Boys Scouts, SUNY Brockport students and faculty participated in a tree planting exercise commemorating Arbor Day 2007. The April 27 event began at Remembrance Park with Margay Blackman, chairperson of the Brockport Tree Board, welcoming all to the board’s second such event. more

Volunteer logs 18,500 hours at Lakeside Hospital
Sadie Wilson, after the death of her daughter in 1966, needed to find a way to go on. "I had to do something and I thought helping others might do me some good. Lakeside is a place of solace and healing; as I helped others, I got back more than I ever gave." more

The Department for Exceptional Children of the Board of Cooperative Education and Services for Monroe and Orleans Counties (BOCES 2) was honored with the Girl Scouts of America Circle of Friends Award. The award is presented to individuals, groups or organizations that have given of time, talent or treasure to the Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley, Inc. more

Hilton HS Science Teacher awarded grant
Hilton High School science teacher Brian McDowell, right, was awarded a grant from the Rochester Academy of Sciences Chemistry Section to purchase GPS (Global Positioning Systems) for his earth science students. more

Photography featured as Genesee's final exhibit for the season
Genesee's final art exhibit of the season will open with a reception on Tuesday, May 8 from 12 to 2 p.m. in the Lobby Arts Gallery of the Stuart Steiner Theatre, located at Genesee Community College's Batavia Campus. The exhibit features the work of Nancy Masters, a Genesee employee who is completing her bachelor's degree in fine arts. more

Spencerport's Blackwell is Business Educator of the Year
The Monroe County Business Educators Association named Spencerport High School Business teacher Michael Blackwell the Monroe County Business Educator of the Year. Blackwell is teacher leader of the Spencerport Central School District's Business Department and coordinator of the Spencerport High School Senior Project. more

Undergraduate and graduate students at the State University of New York College at Brockport will receive their degrees in two separate Commencement ceremonies on campus Saturday, May 12. more

Hilton-Parma Seniors celebrate
Hilton-Parma Seniors and friends celebrated the 23rd anniversary of the Hilton-Parma Senior Center with a dinner dance held April 27. Guests gathered at the Hilton Exempt Club for an evening of food, fun and music provided by Chad Slayton. more

Sweden Seniors programs
Senior Day at the Lilac Festival Wednesday, May 16. Transportation will be provided through efforts of Assemblyman Bill Reilich. Seniors can choose their own lunch from one of the many vendors at their own expense. The group leaves the Sweden Senior Center, 133 State Street, at 10 a.m. and returns at 1:30 p.m. more

Athletic director named at Hilton Schools
Michael P. Giruzzi has been appointed Hilton Central Schools Director of Athletics effective June 4. He replaces retiring Athletic Director Denney Wilcox. more

Lady Cadets beat Devils
Hilton scored three runs in each of the first two innings and went on to defeat Brockport 10-5 in varsity softball. Due to an unplayable field, the Cadets were the home team at Brockport. more

Maxon homers twice
Kendall grad Rachel Maxon homered twice in the nightcap to help the Brockport Golden Eagles to a 2-1, 5-0 doubleheader sweep over visiting RIT to improve their record to 22-8. Maxon led off the first game with a walk and came around to score the first run on Rochelle Cantor's RBI single to center. more

Rochester Futbol Club U11 Girls Division 1 finalists
Playing in their first tournament on April 21 and 22, the Rochester Futbol Club U11 Girls team swept their division at the 2007 Northern Ohio Cup, in Seville, Ohio, defeating four teams from the Pennsylvania and Ohio areas to gain entry into the final game, where they placed second in the championship playoff against the Michigan Rush Nike team from Northfield, Michigan. more

Saints up-end Spartans
Trailing by a goal in the second quarter, Churchville-Chili scored six unanswered tallies over an eight-minute span on the way to an 11-7 win over Gates Chili in boy's lacrosse. more

Girls Volleyball team wins championship
The St. Paul Lutheran School Girls Volleyball team won the Western New York Christian Athletic Association's Championship with a record for the season of 9 wins and 1 loss. more

Tae Kwon Do team dominates midwest tournament
The SUNY Brockport Tae Kwon Do team traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to participate in the annual Midwest Regional Tournament directed by the World Martial Arts Association (WMAA) and hosted by the Indianapolis Club. Martial artists from across the country participated and the event consisted of both individual and team competitions. more
