Boy Scout Troop 292 holds Eagle Court of Honor
Boy Scout Troop 292 held a Court of Honor on May 15, to recognize Jeffrey M. Champlin for earning the rank of Eagle. Gary Wumkes, scoutmaster, was master of ceremonies. Steve McKeown and John Norsen, assistant scoutmasters, participated in the ceremony, along with several scouts including John Lawniczak, Greg Selke, Ken Piasecki, Mike Deal, Kelan Kline and Colin Nobles. more

Father-son partnership expands local dental practice
Dr. Jerry Cellura is welcoming his son, Gerry, as a partner in his Spencerport dental practice. In a letter to his patients Dr. Cellura said that it was “with joy and pride” that he introduces his son. Gerry will begin work with his father in July as Dr. Gerry, to alleviate some of the confusion with the names. more

Kendall voters approve budget proposal
By an overwhelming 250 vote margin, taxpayers in the Kendall Central School District approved the $12.9 million budget. There were 480 yes votes cast, 230 voters were opposed to the budget package. more

Monroe County Library System sponsors photo contest
The Monroe County Library System is sponsoring a summer photography contest Picture This, Imagine That - Photography Contest. Seymour Library in Brockport is accepting photos for the contest. more

Report dead crows to assess risk from West Nile Virus
Monroe County health officials are once again requesting that residents report dead crows to them to assist in determining the level of risk to humans posed by West Nile Virus (WNV). "Crows appear to be the most susceptible to WNV and therefore serve as an early warning sign for us about the level of virus circulating in our community," said Health Director Dr. Andrew Doniger. more

Revamping Engine 55
Engine 55 (formerly known as Old Bertha or Gerdi) was the first piece of fire apparatus purchased by the Hamlin Fire District back in 1931. She served the town and its residents well but over the years her colors have faded and her mechanical parts are failing. more

Safety Fair draws crowd
On Saturday, May 31, Holley Karate in conjunction with the Holley Police and Fire Departments presented the 1st annual Safety & Prevention Kids Fair. Despite poor weather, close to 200 children turned out for the event. Each child attending received a free Kids Fair t-shirt in addition to a variety of handouts from the participating organizations. more

Study shows where New York state's population growth is lagging
New York continued to pull out of the population decline of the 1970s during the last decade, but growth in the state still lagged behind most of the country, according to a new report by The Public Policy Institute, the research affiliate of The Business Council of New York State. more

Voters in Holley veto budget
Even though they were presented with a budget that was below contingency levels, voters in the Holley Central School district turned down the proposed $15.5 million package. There were 565 votes against the proposed budget and 499 in favor. The proposition to add $81,539 to the Holley Community Free Library budget was also defeated by a vote of 489 against and 478 in favor. more

Why did the deer cross the road? It didn't. Neither did the bear, fox or coyote, according to a new study, co-authored by New York State Museum researchers, which finds that underpasses designed to keep wildlife off of the Adirondack Northway are not working. more

The ducks are eager for Lakeside's Duck Derby to be held on August 10. Lakeside Memorial Hospital had 13 new arrivals over Memorial Day weekend. more

Youth Center should be built without raising taxes, Logel says
Republican County Legislator Tracy Logel said that unexpected revenues from the County mortgage tax should be set aside as a down payment on a Chili Youth Center. The County Legislature's Ways and Means Committee approved legislation that provides the Town of Chili with $375,000 in mortgage tax revenues, $50,000 more than was originally budgeted by the town. more

Empire State college gets a new name
Empire State College's Center for Workforce Advancement has redefined its focus and its mission to better serve its clients in a changing economy and marketplace. As part of this initiative, the center will change its name, effective June 2, to Corporate Education. more

Spencerport High School receives State honor
The State Education Department has awarded special recognition to the Spencerport High School Business Department. The department is the recipient of the 2003 Department of the Year Award for the nine-county region that includes Monroe County. more

Spencerport voters approve school budget
Spencerport School District voters approved a $52.8 million budget by a margin of 1,891 to 1,170. The proposition for replacement buses also passed by a vote of 1,660 to 1,223. voters chose James Oberlin, with 1,501 votes, and Todd Dunn, with 1,470 votes, to fill the two vacant school board seats. more

Taxpayers in Brockport school district approved budget
By a more than two-to-one margin, taxpayers in the Brockport Central School District approved a $55.2 million budget on June 3. There were 1,478 votes for the budget and 624 against. Voters also approved a proposition to spend $895,000 for school buses by a 1,291 to 716 margin. more

Trying art on for size
Artist Maura Allen shows a Holley fifth-grade art class a colorful painting she created using wax and paint - a process called batik. Ms. Allen visited Mimi Reyngoudt's classroom to demonstrate batik while she described the culture and history of Indonesia, which is where the process originated. more

The Section Five Class AA boy's tennis championship came down to the final doubles match. Penfield and Brockport split the four singles matches and two of the three doubles matches. more

On Monday, June 23, golfers from Upstate New York will be participating in the 9th annual Golf Fore MS Tournament presented by Trident Precision Manufacturing, Inc. It will be held at Shadow Lake and Shadow Pines Golf Courses in Penfield. more

Kearney offers cheerleading camp
Bishop Kearney High School is now taking applications for Cheerleading Conditioning Camp. The camp is open to cheerleaders ages 7 and up to improve the fundamentals and introduce the advancements of cheerleading. more

Rangers in final for second year
The Spencerport Rangers reached the Section Five Class A softball final for the second season in a row and second time in the school's history, but dropped a 2-0 decision to Fairport in the title game June 2 at SUNY Brockport. more

Safe shooting sports event planned
The Holley Rod & Gun Club, in conjunction with the National Rifle Association, is holding a Family Fun Shooting Sports Event Saturday, June 28. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the club's grounds on Pumping Station Road. more
