A partnership has been formed between the Spencerport Canal Days Committee and Jim LeBeau of Beau Productions. The Gates Historical Society is preparing the first-ever pictorial history of the Town of Gates and invites anyone with vintage photographs of the town and its people, places, organizations, and events to submit them for consideration in this new book. more

PSC seeks public comment on RG&E improvements
The New York State Public Service Commission is seeking public comment on an application for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (Certificate) filed by the Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RG&E) for the construction or reconstruction of various improvements to its 115 kilovolt (kV) electric transmission system in the Greater Rochester area. more

RPYO-RPO perform Music Italian Style
The Annual Side-by-Side Concert of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra will take place on Sunday, February 29, at 3 p.m. at the Eastman Theatre under the direction of Dr. David Harman, RPYO Music Director. more

Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra to tour Italy
During the school spring break in April, the 95 student musicians of the RPYO and their parent chaperones will embark on a musical tour of northern Italy. This ten-day visit continues the RPYO's recent tradition of undertaking a major tour every three years. more

Thomas Taber, of Albion, will be the featured speaker at this Wednesday's membership meeting of the Clarkson Historical Society. His recent book, Hard Breathing Days, is a collection of more than 160 letters from Cora Beach Benton to her Civil War husband Charlie. more

Girl Scouts earn Bronze Award
Six area girls have earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award. This is the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can achieve. Each girl was required to work at least 15 hours in planning and carrying out her project. She had to earn two badges related to her project as well as the Junior Aide Patch and at least one Girl Scout Sign. more

RPYO holds spring auditions
RPYO (Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra) auditions for new student musicians for the 2004-2005 season will take place on May 6-8, in the RPO Offices on East Avenue. Advanced student musicians who are currently in at least the seventh grade and who participate in a school's instrumental ensemble are eligible to audition. more

RWCCO performs "Music Fit for the Czars"
The March 6 concert of the Roberts Wesleyan College-Community Orchestra, "Music Fit for the Czars," will feature music from Russian composer Alexander Borodin. RWCCO Conductor Paul Shewan characterizes Borodin's style as "lush and romantic - very much the soulful Russian form." more

William C. Munn Elementary School will host Camp Invention®, a national summer day camp that encourages children to develop their innate creative abilities. It will be held July 12 to 16 from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children entering second through sixth grade in the 2004-2005 school year. more

Holley teams place first at
Regional Odyssey of the Mind Tournament

Holley Elementary School will be sending two teams to the 2004 New York State Odyssey of the Mind Association (NYSOMA) State Tournament at Binghamton University on March 13. Both teams placed first in the regional tournament at Wilson High School in Wilson, New York on February 21. more

Kendall Jr. High Band performs at All County Festival
Junior High Band students traveled to Holley High School on February 6 and 7 to participate in the Orleans All County Junior High Band. Under the direction of former Holley Band Director Dr. Marcia Parkes, who now teaches in Spencerport, students prepared and performed music with student musicians from other schools in the county. more

Kendall Change Rangers help area kids
The man behind the mask is kindergartener Nicholas Manners, just one of Kendall Elementary's "Change Rangers." The students collected spare change from their teachers and family to benefit the children at Golisano Children's Hospital. more

National expert to speak on financing private education
Families considering private education for their children are invited to attend a free seminar titled, "From Kindergarten to College: How to Provide Your Child with the Best Education Possible." The seminar will be held March 10 at 7 p.m. at the RIT Inn and Conference Center and is open to the public. more

Margaret Sheldon Welch marks 100th birthday
Margaret Sheldon Welch noted her 100th birthday with a celebration at Lakeside Beikirch Care Center on January 31. Margaret was born January 31, 1904 to parents Willard and Elsie Case. She married George Sheldon when she was 19 years old, and they were married for 31 years, until George died suddenly at age 56. more

Cadets fall in third period
Hilton led 2-0 after the first period, but allowed fourth-seeded Irondequoit to score three unanswered goals over the final two for a 3-2 sectional playoff victory ending the Cadets season. more

Hilton's Farnham Coach of the Year
Hilton High School hockey coach John Farnham was named Coach of the Year in the White Division of the Monroe County High School Hockey League for the 2003-04 season. more

March Madness in Churchville raises funds for family
The 6th annual Lions vs. Leos charity basketball game will be played in the Churchville-Chili Junior High gym on Sunday, March 7 at 1:15 p.m. Proceeds from this year's game will help pay the medical expenses of the Everett family of North Chili. more
