Hamlin to begin construction on justice court
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held September 28 at 10 a.m. at the Hamlin Town Hall complex to kick off the renovation of a recreation storage building into a new town justice court. Actual construction will begin October 1. more

Spencerport Community Chorus kicks off season
The 40-voice Spencerport Community Chorus, now in it's 20th year, is an active choral group that rehearses Sunday from 3 to 5:15 p.m. at the historic First Congregational Church (The White Church) located at 65 Church Street in Spencerport. It is a member of the Greater Rochester Choral Consortium (GRCC) and has participated in the annual Community Carol Sing and traditional Tree Lighting by the canal; historical canal events; Summer Canal Days; winter and spring concerts; the Prism Concert at the Eastman Theater. more

Sweden looks at possible water district projects
The Town of Sweden has hired Lakeside Engineering to prepare a map and plan for the Gallup Road expansion to the Sweden consolidated water district. Residents petitioned the town to bring water to Gallup Road north of the canal, to Skidmore Drive and to part of Gordon Road. more

West Nile virus case prompts renewed warnings
A 49-year-old Suffolk County woman has tested positive for West Nile virus based on preliminary laboratory findings, according to State Health Commissioner Antonia C. Novello. This is the first known human case of West Nile virus to occur this year in New York State outside of the New York City. more

Amadeus Chorale plans benefit concert
The Amadeus Chorale is a children's and youth singing organization dedicated to preparing singers and sharing their talents with the community. The chorale is making plans for its Annual Benefit concert. This year it will take place on Sunday, November 18 at the Roberts Wesleyan College Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Past charity concerts have benefited Rochester School for the Deaf and Lakeside Hospital. more

Annual Family Fest during homecoming and family weekend
The Brockport Child Care Center, located on the SUNY College at Brockport Campus, will sponsor the 11th annual Family Fest on Saturday, September 22, from noon to 3 p.m., in Special Olympics Park on the SUNY Brockport campus. The event is part of the college's Homecoming & Family Weekend. more

Pumpkins arrive as signs of fall
Pumpkins will be showing up at some local farm markets this week. The pumpkin crop is of good quality but size and numbers are considerably reduced this year, especially on fields that were not irrigated. Many growers are reporting wide variability in size and weight. Pumpkins are maturing about two-weeks earlier than usual on many fields. Consequently, many farmers will be working at improving their storage techniques in order to ensure enough pumpkins for Halloween. more

Spencerport School Board approves use of Alco-Sensor at school events
The Spencerport Board of Education has approved the use of an Alco-Sensor at school events when there is a reasonable concern that a person is under the influence of alcohol. Authorized district personnel may administer an Alco-Sensor test when a person, including students, attending a school event or on school grounds displays noticeable impairment, according to district officials. more


In Seniors:

Mystery Trip planned for Hilton-Parma seniors
Plans have been made for the Hilton-Parma Seniors to embark on one of their one-day mystery trips on Wednesday, October 24 including activities and lunch. Since this involves traveling into Canada, proof of citizenship is required. Acceptable forms of identification are a birth certificate or an expired or current passport. The bus will leave the Village Community at 7:30 a.m. $37 fee includes the driver gratuity. more

Unity Health System's Adult Daycare honored by Alzheimer's Association
Unity Health System's dementia-specific adult daycare program, Park Place at St. Bernard's, received the 2001 Quality of Life Award for being an outstanding support service provider. Sponsored by the Rochester Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, the award was presented at the Rochester Chapter's annual fund raising dinner in June. more

Baton & flag twirling offered
Intro to Baton course will be offered during the Hilton-Parma Recreation fall session only. There will be two classes for children ages 5-7 - Monday evenings from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., or from 7 to 7:45 p.m. starting September 24. Another class for those kids ages 8-12 will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 6:45 p.m. beginning September 19. The cost for each class is $34 and includes 10 - 45 minute sessions. Batons will be available at no charge for use during class. more

Blue Devils trounce Wilson
Brockport's boys soccer team increased their record to 2-1 with a 7-1 win at home against Wilson September 10. Sophomore Scott Larnder scored the first two goals of the game in the first 20 minutes with assists from Blaine Hastings and Stephen Remillard. Senior Aaron Webster closed out the first half with his first goal of the season to make it 3-0 and opened the second half with his second goal after Maurice Powell forced a turnover at midfield and fed Webster. more

Brockport wins women's soccer home opener
Leanna Gedraitis (West Falls/Holland) led Brockport to a 2-0 win over Nazareth College September 6, scoring both goals for the Golden Eagles. The score remained at 1-0 going into the half. Gedraitis scored her second goal of the game, fifth of the season, in the 55th minute. The goal was unassisted. more

Hilton-Parma Recreation offers Tai Chi demonstration
Hilton-Parma Recreation will be offering a free T'ai Chi demonstration on Monday, September 17 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Village Community Center, 59 Henry Street. This demo will include history and discussion of the principles underlying the practice of T'ai Chi for health, relaxation, and stress relief as well as the demonstration of two styles. This is your chance to give T'ai Chi a try. All ages are welcome. more

Run for the apples in Hilton September 29
Hilton-Parma Recreation is gearing up for the 23rd Annual Apple Derby/Merkel 5-Mile Run scheduled for Saturday morning September 29. The traditional certified course, which begins at Hilton High School and finishes at Canning Street Square, will be utilized; and this year, seven male and female champion categories have been established. Similar to past races, all runners will receive the specially designed Apple Derby Run shirt and winners cup which depicts all the past champions and their times. more

Spencerport School Board approves new policies for student-athletes
The Spencerport Board of Education has approved a revision to the district's athletic code of conduct for the 2001-2002 school year. There are two key revisions. more

Sportsmen invite everyone to step outdoors
The 28th annual celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day will be held September 22-23 at the Department of Environmental Conservation in East Avon. The theme of the occasion is "A Natural Invitation To Step Outdoors." It is a challenge for every outdoors-person to share knowledge and enjoyment of the natural world with "indoor" friends. more

Hilton-Parma Recreation offers two non-contact, non-competitive football programs offered to boys and girls in grades 2-6. These programs will both take place on Saturdays starting October 6 through November 3. more
