Churchville-Chili Superintendent Mary Alice Price has been appointed the new superintendent of Pittsford Schools. The Pittsford Board of Education approved her appointment at a special board meeting Monday, June 3. Price will take over the leadership position on or before September 10. more

Lakeside launches Kendall and Spencerport committees
On the evening of May 13, Lakeside hosted volunteers about to reach out to their families, friends and neighbors to encourage support for Lakeside Health System. The kick-off celebration signaled the beginning of the Kendall and Spencerport Committees of the Lakeside "Building for the Next Generation" Capital Campaign. more
New physician specialist joins staff
Richard C. Dobson, MD, Physiatrist, is a physician who specializes in Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation, and has joined Lakeside Health System with full medical privileges. Dr. Dobson is board certified and will admit and follow the care of rehabilitation patients during their stay in the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services Program at the Lakeside Beikirch Care Center. more
Orleans countywide SADD chapter forming
The Genesee-Orleans Youth Bureau has received funds through NYS Traffic Safety Committee to develop a county-wide SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Program in Orleans County. The funding will come through the DWI Program Enhancement initiative. more
Paddler accepts River Challenge
David Peasley, 15, of Spencerport will be on the Rochester River Challenge Youth Teams racing on Saturday, June 15, at the South Wedge Landing on the Genesee River in Rochester. David is the son of James and Donna Peasley of Spencerport and is a sophomore at Spencerport High School. He has been canoeing about five years and racing competitively for three. He just recently purchased his own kayak. more

The Parma Library will be offering a full range of programs for children of all ages this summer. Pre-school story hours for children 3-1/2 to 5 years old are a blend of stories, songs, games, films and fun. Sessions will be held on Mondays or Tuesdays from 10:15-11:15 a.m. more
Parma receives grant for historical display
The New York Council for the Humanities in New York City has awarded a $1,390 grant to the Parma Meetinghouse Museum to aid in the preparation of two panel exhibits for the Parma Town Historian's office. more

Rochester Street Rods car show benefits Alzheimer's Association
The Rochester Street Rods, comprised mainly of pre-1949 cars modified for performance, will display their cars from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 15. Hilton East Assisted Living, host of the event, is located 1/4 mile west of Hilton High School. Hilton East will serve lunch from 11 a.m. to noon with proceeds benefiting Alzheimer's Association. more

Special Olympian is super fundraiser
Working hard to raise funds for Monroe County Special Olympics, Brian Gundy, of Spencerport, a Special Olympian himself, was the number one fundraiser for the seventh consecutive year in Spike's Hike 2002 held May 25. His $2,220 total not only reflects the year in which it was raised - 2002 - but also raises Gundy's total to $11,000 over seven years. more
Spencerport Fire Department hosts annual Carnival fundraiser
The Spencerport Fire Department welcomes Great American Midways to town for the annual Firemen's Carnival. This year's activities kick off on Wednesday, June 12 at 7 p.m. with the Kiddie Parade, followed by the Grand Parade on Thursday, June 13. The whistle blows at 7 o'clock with the Spencerport firefighters leading the procession. more

Boating safety courses meet new regs
Regulations for operating a personal watercraft, i.e. boat, Jet Ski, now require an operator's certificate. By the year 2004 all operators must have these certificates. This year, all operators born on or after January 1, 1975 must have a certificate. In 2003, operators born on or after January 1, 1972 must have a certificate. more

Burns receives Disaster Relief Ribbon
Lieutenant Colonel Robert H. Burns CAP, United States Air Force Auxiliary, was awarded the Disaster Relief Ribbon With "V" Device in recognition of outstanding assistance to our nation following the events of September 11, 2001. The award was presented to Burns by Colonel Richard A. Greenhut CAP, Northeast Region Commander, and Colonel Austyn W. Granville CAP, New York Wing Commander on May 4, 2002. more
Festa Italiana planned
Officials at the Italian American Community Center have unveiled plans for the first annual Festa Italian (Italian Festival) that will be held July 19-21 on the grounds of the Italian American Community Center in Gates. Planned by a committee of its members, this festival will closely resemble the traditional festivals found in Italy. more

Meeting on Parma Animal Shelter scheduled
The Town of Parma will be holding an open forum at the Parma Town Hall on Tuesday, June 18 at 7 p.m. to answer questions about the Kathleen A. Tenny Animal Shelter. This meeting is open to anyone who is interested in this project. Ideas for a logo are also invited. Anyone who's interested in helping local animals is welcome to attend.

Amended legislation benefiting thousands of working New Yorkers and their families by raising the state's hourly minimum wage from $5.15 to $6.75 as of January 1, 2003 was approved by the Assembly June 4. more

Kendall Elementary recycles for sight
Kendall Elementary students are helping people all over the world see more clearly. The second- and third-grades coordinated an eyeglass donation effort that brought in nearly 600 pairs of glasses and six hearing aids. The items were then donated to the Kendall Lions Club and will be taken to recycling centers in either Pennsylvania or Indiana. more

Public forum on school attendance policy set
Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES will be holding a public forum at its regularly scheduled board meeting on June 18 to review the proposed new Comprehensive Attendance Policy and answer questions. According to new regulations on pupil attendance from New York's Board of Regents, every district and BOCES in the state must adopt a Comprehensive Attendance Policy by June 30 this year and fully implement that policy by July 1, 2003. more

The Parma Free Nursery School, located at the corner of Route 259 and Burritt Road in Parma, will hold their 29th annual Baccalaureate-Graduation Ceremony for four and five year old students on Thursday and Friday, June 13 and 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Parma Free Church. more

Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES District Superintendent C. Tod Eagle recognized Matthew Hughson as an "Outstanding Senior." Matthew, a Holley student who attends the BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education Center, was among seniors from every high school in Monroe County and the City of Rochester that were honored in a ceremony at Cooper Hall at SUNY Brockport on May 23. more

The National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) and the National Rifle Association (NRA) are co-sponsoring their fifth annual essay contest for college-bound female high school juniors and seniors, which this year will be entitled "Freedom and Security in a Dangerous Decade." more

Pace Exercise Class - The Chili Senior Center offers exercise class on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The class offers easy exercises for men and women with arthritis or limited range of motion. Most exercises are done sitting in a chair. more

Brockport High School junior Savannah Richards has been named a finalist for the Rochester- Monroe County Youth Bureau's 2002 Young Citizen of the Year honor for the 15 to 21 year old level. more
Saints lose in semi's
"We were hitting the ball well today making good contact, but nothing solid," Churchville-Chili's varsity softball coach M.P. Dewey described her teams 1-0 loss to Webster in eight innings May 30 in the sectional semi-finals. The win put the Warriors up against Spencerport in the Class A finals, a game they would go on to win for the title, 12-6. The Rangers reached the championship game for the first time in school history by upsetting top-seeded Irondequoit 4-0. more

for National Student Leadership Conference
Two student-athletes from Spencerport, Juniors Megan Reising and Phillip Mannix, have been selected to attend the National Federation of State High School Association's 2002 Student Leadership Conference. This year's conference, "Making a Difference," will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana in July. more
