receives donation from Twig Association
The LMH Twig Association recently donated eight bassinets to the maternity department. They are valued at $13,521. These oak bassinets replace the existing 30-year-old bassinets. The new bassinets are easily transportable and have storage space for baby toiletries. more

Officials break ground for canal side community center
Village trustees, Town of Sweden officials and other dignitaries joined Brockport Mayor Josephine Matela to turn the first spade of earth for the new canal side community center on Water Street at Harvester Park. more

Rochester celebrates 150th anniversary of George Eastman's birth
George Eastman House and the Rochester community kick off this summer the celebration of the 150th anniversary of George Eastman's birth. A variety of commemoration events will mark the impact Eastman - the father of popular photography and motion picture film, as well as one of the country's leading philanthropists - had on Rochester and the world. more

For 40 years, Literacy Volunteers of Rochester (LVR) has been improving the lives of Rochesterians by promoting literacy. Originally an affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of America, LVR was founded in 1964 by Church Women United with the premise that if each volunteer could teach one student, they could help solve the problems of illiteracy. more

Assembly Republican Leader Charles H. Nesbitt urged the speaker to call the Assembly back to Albany as soon as possible to return to work on budget negotiations as well as to act on a lengthy list of important issues that still need to be resolved. more

'Patriot Plan II' will honor and help New York's military personnel

Senate passes bill prohibiting campus credit card merchandising
The New York State Senate has passed a bill (S.510C), sponsored by Senator George D. Maziarz (R-C, North Tonawanda) that would prohibit the direct merchandising of credit cards through public and private colleges in New York state. more

Canal View cares for the troops
Spencerport's newest school, Canal View Elementary, successfully completed its first school-wide community service project, "Canal View Cares." During a month-long period, students donated items, approved by the Red Cross, to be sent to specific U.S. Army units serving in Iraq. more

C-C discusses proposed staggered school start times
As a way to increase efficiencies of the transportation system and to better fill the school buses, Churchville-Chili school officials proposed the idea of staggering the start and stop times of the elementary school. more

Class of '52 grads present a gift
On June 8, the wrought iron bench pictured was installed in the entryway of the Brockport Middle School and presented to Principal Anne Sweeting. The bronze plaque signifies the gift from the Class of 1952. more

Donald White Music Award presented
Paul MacEwen (center) was the recipient of the Donald White Music Award presented at the Brockport High School band banquet held in June. The award is named in honor of the late Donald White, an accomplished trumpet player who inspired others. more

Former Hilton student earns Fulbright, heads to France
When Denise Mahns, Hilton High School and Nazareth College graduate, steps in front of her class for the first time next fall it will feel like a whole new world - or at least a different country. Mahns has earned a prestigious Fulbright French Government Teaching Assistantship. She will be teaching English to secondary students in Strasbourg, France. more

On the last day of school for the past ten years the teachers and staff at Fairbanks Road School in Riga have been saying goodbye to their students by linking arms and forming a chorus line. more

Hill School student wins
Wheeled Vehicle Safety Awareness Contest

Three fourth grade students from the Brockport Hill Elementary School won the Monroe County Department of Public Safety 2004 Wheeled Vehicle Safety Awareness Contest. Taylor Klafehn received the grand prize of a new bicycle and helmet for the rap song he wrote about helmet safety. more

Hill School receives donation in the name of science
Science Fun Day has been a tradition at Brockport's Hill Elementary School for about 10 years. Fourth- and fifth-graders look forward to the day in June that is filled with hands-on science activities. The Lift Bridge Book Shop in Brockport recently raised $700 to help fund Science Fun Day. more

Hilton HS Senior Band Luncheon
The Hilton High School Senior Band luncheon was held June 24 at Pelican's Restaurant on the Genesee River at Charlotte. Band members along with teachers Nancy Russo and Jared Streiff boarded the Pelican 'trolley' at Wegman's Plaza on Latta Road. more

Holley kindergarteners (l-r) Eva Beadle, Nicole Schicker and Brianna Lewis wave their flags during the Elementary School's annual Flag Day parade. The entire student population paraded around the Village of Holley carrying banners and flags and wearing red, white and blue. more

Spencerport board votes to phase out Triad program
Citing the success of the district's School-Wide Enrichment Program, the Spencerport School District Board of Education voted Tuesday, June 22, to phase out the Triad program. more

Students receive scholarships from Chili church
Tim Boerschlein, Rorie DePaul, Stephanie Faatz and Brendan Leahy were recognized as this year's recipients of the John and Eda Reinhardt scholarships. The scholarship fund was established in 1992 by Eda Reinhardt and the $1000 scholarships are available to qualifying young men and women who are part of the church family. more

Fundraising run scheduled
A special fund-raising 5K run is planned for Saturday, July 24 with all race proceeds going directly to assist Sara Minni's medical expenses. She is a local six-year old who has brain cancer. To date, she has undergone five operations and has been through 10 chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Her last operation was in March, and the cancer has again returned. more
