Brockport planning board to reconvene Hibsch hearing
The Brockport Planning Board will reconvene a public hearing regarding the proposed Hibsch cluster housing development off East Avenue on September 10 at 8 p.m. It may be the public’s last formal chance to comment on the project as a whole, as the planning board expects to grant conceptual design approval by September 24, if required changes to the plans have been made. more

County partners with towns to accept household hazardous waste
Monroe County's Department of Environmental Services, along with the towns of Chili, Gates, Wheatland, Village of Scottsville, and the Eastman Kodak Company will co-host a regional Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection. The collection will be held at the Town of Chili Highway Garage, 3235 Chili Avenue, Saturday, September 29 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. All drop-offs are by appointment only. Hilton 4-H Club to help with horse show fundraiser
The Hilton Horsemen 4-H Club is helping to put on the second Annual Lakeside Gymkhana on September 8 as its community project for this year. Last year the club won the Monroe County Service Award for its participation with the horse show. The award is given to a 4-H Club that strives for a better community. This year the club has expanded its involvement from riding in the event to setting up classes and selling raffle tickets. more

Local youth inspired by democracy in action
John Ayers, son of Steven and Pat Ayers, Hilton, participated in the American Legion's Boys' Nation program in Washington, DC. John was one of two delegates from each of the participating 48 states invited to attend the Boys' Nation program. more

Murray awarded rural development funds
The Town of Murray has been awarded a $775,000 low-interest loan under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program. The Town of Murray will use the funds to construct a new 6,000 square foot town hall, which will house the town's offices and meeting and conference rooms. more

Sharing the road with school buses
When children go back to school, parents develop a checklist: shop for clothes, buy new shoes, and purchase pens, paper and notebooks. But Progressive Insurance (NYSE: PGR), the nation's fourth largest auto insurer, wants everyone to put one thing at the top of their list during the back-to-school season - safe driving. more

Some Brockport residents eligible for blood tests

Special "Grief Walk" offered
Genesee Region Home Care and Hospice will offer a special event for family members and friends whose loved one has died. Those who are interested may gather for "Grief-Walking" at Mendon Ponds Park on Saturday morning, September 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. more

Sweden hikes water rates
The water rate for Sweden Consolidated Water District customers will rise by twenty cents to $2.85 per thousand gallons beginning September 1. The million cubic feet rate will be $21.31 more

Apple Pie Contest in sixth year
The Hilton Apple Fest's Sixth Apple Pie Contest will be held Saturday morning, September 29. This contest is open to all New York state residents. The pies must be made with New York state apples. Pies will be judged on appearance, taste, and texture. more

Brockport artist's work in new exhibit
The work of Dianne Hickerson, Brockport watercolor artist, appears in the Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors running through September 23 at Old Forge, NY at the Arts Center/Old Forge. more

The Western Erie Canal Heritage Corridor Planning Commission has announced the final appointments to complete representation on the regional body. more

Community Chorus begins rehearsals
The Spencerport Community Chorus will begin rehearsing for its 2001-2002 concert season on Sunday, September 23 at the First Congregational Church (The White Church), 65 Church Street in Spencerport. Rehearsals are from 3 to 5:15 p.m. All singers are welcome and there are no auditions. more

Downtown Brockport Live on Sept. 8
The RPO's Marimba Band will appear in Sagawa Park, on the corners of Erie and Main Streets, Brockport, on Saturday, September 8, at noon. A mix of xylophones, marimbas, percussion, steel drums and more, the RPO special concert group will perform tunes from ragtime to Lion King; jazz to steel drum selections. more

Fire muster and parade September 8 in Hilton
The 2001 parade and muster of the Genesee Valley Chapter of SPAAMFAA (the Society for the Preservation And Appreciation of Motorized Fire Apparatus in America) will be held Saturday, September 8 at the Hilton Fire Department Field from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. more

Local florist participates in FTD free flowers promotion
Wednesday, September 5, residents of the Brockport area will have the unique opportunity to meet each other and develop new friendships when Arjuna Florist and Gift Shop hosts the annual FTD Good Neighbor Day event. Beginning at 9 a.m., Arjuna, 78 Main Street in Downtown Brockport, will give away 1,000 flowers in bunches of a dozen, absolutely free to anyone who visits the shop, while supplies last. more

Old Timers' Day, September 9
Old Timers' Day, an annual Cobblestone Society event, will be celebrated this year on Sunday, September 9 from 1 to 5 p.m., on the museum grounds at Childs, rain or shine. The museum is located at the intersection of Routes 98 and 104 (Ridge Road), 2.5 miles north of Albion. more

Parma Public Library to hold annual booksale
The Parma Public Library will begin its annual fall booksale on Monday, September 10 at 10 a.m. The sale will run during the following two weeks, ending on Friday, September 21 with a full-scale, back-the-truck-up, haul-it-all-out-of-here, bag, box and car trunk bash and will include books (donations and library discards), videos, CDs and cassettes. more

In Schools:

Brockport splits early bus run
Starting this week, the Brockport Central School District will operate four regular bus runs each school day. The early run, which transports middle and high school students to school, will be split into separate middle school and high school runs beginning on the first day of school, September 5. more

Hepatitis B Shot required for 7th grade school entry
Monroe County health officials have issued a reminder that students who will be entering seventh grade this fall are required by state law to be vaccinated against hepatitis B, a serious liver disease. Students who have not received the shot will likely be excluded from school. Eighth graders who did not get the shot last year must also be vaccinated. more

School begins Thursday in Byron-Bergen district
The first day of school in the Byron-Bergen Central School District for kindergarten through grade 12 is Thursday, September 6. Starting and dismissal time for the school day will be the same as last year.

Spencerport School breakfast and lunch prices remain the same
Spencerport schools student breakfast and lunch prices will remain the same for the 2001-02 school year. The cost of breakfast for grades one through 12 is $.75; the cost of lunch is $1.50. more

Seniors invited to attend supper club
Senior citizens are invited to attend Supper Club 60 every Tuesday at either 4:15 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. for dinner at the Wegmans Market Café, 3175 Chili Avenue. more

Hilton Parma Recreation fall program brochure now available
Hilton-Parma Recreation's Fall 2001 Program Brochure is now available at locations within the Village of Hilton and the Town of Parma. The brochure will also be distributed through the Hilton School District beginning September 6. more

Kendall offers bow hunter safety course
The Town of Kendall Recreation Department will host a Bow Hunter Safety Course this year for interested persons. Completion of this course is required for anyone 14 years of age or older wishing to obtain a license to hunt with bow-and-arrow. more

Soccer tourneys open season
Spencerport Central Schools will be hosting the annual Ron Broadbent/Joan Selander Soccer Tournament on September 14 and 15 at the Spencerport Central Schools soccer stadium. more

Spencerport Sports Boosters sell blanket as fund raiser
The Spencerport Sports Boosters Club is selling a waterproof blanket to raise money to support Spencerport's athletic programs. The blanket measures 50x57 inches, with waterproof nylon on one side and fleece on the other. more

Sports Oldtimers Reunion September 20
The Sports Oldtimers Reunion will be held Thursday, September 20 at 5 p.m. Stan Witmyer, recently voted the best basketball player of his day by the sports group, will receive a trophy at the dinner. more
