House improvement initiative moving forward
Volunteers with carpentry, landscaping or other skills and individuals who are in need of improvements to their homes are being sought for a home improvement initiative. Village of Brockport Trustee David Wagenhauser has been researching the possibility of such an initiative within the village. more

Kendall looks to amend zoning regulations to include MET towers
The vote was unanimous when Town of Kendall officials were asked to set a date for a public hearing to consider amending zoning regulations as they apply to the feasibility of installing commercial wind energy conversions systems (CWECS) in the town. more

Paint the Town Purple & Relay For Life emphasize cancer awareness
On May 1, Rochester westside communities will take part in the American Cancer Society Paint the Town Purple. Local businesses, village and town buildings will "paint the town" with ribbons, posters, balloons and tee shirts in purple, the color used to symbolize all types of cancer. Residents are encouraged to wear purple and/or display purple ribbons and balloons to raise awareness in the fight against cancer and its elimination. more

Soap box derby coming back to Brockport
With the popularity of the Soap Box derby that came to Brockport last year, organizers are looking to bring the event back in August. Dave Jewell, a member of the Brockport Rotary, addressed village officials regarding the event's return the weekend of August 25 and 26. The race will again be held in the Smith Street bridge area. more

Elmgrove United Methodist Church hosts a Stock Car Show, Art Show and Open House on Saturday, April 28 from noon to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the community. more

Spencerport Crop Walk planned
Spencerport residents will be gearing up to join in the Spencerport Area Crop Walk on Sunday, May 6 at 1 p.m. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. The walk will start at the Methodist Church on Amity Street, go along the canal path to the bridge in Adams Basin and return. more

The IACC Tenth Annual Women of the Year Awards
The Italian American Community Center (IACC) will hold its Tenth Annual Women of the Year Awards to recognize the accomplishments of Rochester area women of Italian descent. These women represent a cross section of the community, with accomplishments in the arts, business, education, civic affairs/government, science, and the leadership and volunteerism at the IACC. more

Winds of change blow through Hamlin's Wind Tower committee
Hamlin's Wind Tower Committee has undergone more changes in leadership. The original committee, formed to discuss and research the feasibility of wind towers in the town, was chaired by Art McFarlane. He resigned in March and committee member Mark Reeves was appointed. Reeves stepped down from the leadership role in early April to be replaced by Linda DeRue. more

The Clarkson Democratic Committee is seeking candidates to run in the upcoming elections this November. The positions available will be two town council members, one town supervisor, and one town clerk. more

Election inspectors needed
The Ogden Democratic Committee is looking for registered Democrats to work as election inspectors for primaries and general elections. The pay is $10 an hour. Paid training is provided. more

Legislation introduced to preserve freshwater resource
Senator George D. Maziarz (R-Newfane) and Assemblyman Bob Sweeney (D-Lindenhurst) introduced legislation to enact the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact (S.4324/A.7266). more

Holley students in Suzanne Lepkowski's 11th grade English class took their study of the novel The Great Gatsby to the next level. Instead of just reading about the jazz age, they learned the dances portrayed in the novel. more

Genesee president to receive SUNY faculty honor
The State University of New York Faculty Council of Community Colleges has named Genesee Community College President Stuart Steiner as its 2007 recipient of the organization's SUNY Community College Distinguished Service Award. The award will be presented at the organization's spring plenary session in late April. more

Four candidates will be on the ballot for three, three-year terms on the Hilton Board of Education at the May 15 Budget Vote and Board Election. more

Prom safety campaign launched
Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks launched the county's first-ever Prom Safety Campaign to help students make the right choices about alcohol and other drugs on prom night. She unveiled a new brochure for parents offering safety tips, information regarding teen drinking and other common prom facts. more

"Steps for Sudan" benefits Sudanese well project
Salva Dut, a Sudanese refugee and one of the "Lost Boys" who settled in Rochester, spoke to Hilton High School International Baccalaureate (IB) students last fall. Dut's organization, Water for Sudan, has collected donations to support the drilling of wells in Sudan. more

The Rochester Boxing Hall of Fame will be hosting a special birthday party for three time World Champion and member Carmen Basilio at the Infield on April 25, at 7 p.m. to celebrate his 80th birthday and the 50th Anniversary of his receiving the Hickok Belt Award in 1957. more

Rochester Warriors 14U girls off to a fast start
The Rochester Warriors 14U girls AAU basketball team started the season victorious traveling to Cortland for the Cortland Shootout. The Warriors beat every team they played by double-digit margins and won the championship. more
