The Amadeus Chorale recently returned from a five-day tour of the Baltimore-Washington area. The singing group, consisting of young men and women in grades seven through twelve, had the opportunity to perform in many venues for a variety of audiences. more

Brockport advised no basis for suit yet
The Village of Brockport probably hasn’t suffered enough financial loss at this point to justify a lawsuit against 3M and General Electric, an attorney told the Brockport Village Board at its July 16 meeting. more

Chili Fire Department welcomes three new members
The Chili Fire Department welcomed three new members this past month. Ben Evans, who resides on Orangetree Circle, will be volunteering as a firefighter at Company #1; Jeremy Sibbald, who resides on Chestnut Ridge Road, will be volunteering as a firefighter at Company #3; and Liz Bachmann, who resides on Adela Circle, will be volunteering on the Rescue/Ambulance Squad at Company #1. more

Classes cover aspects of preserving summer's bounty
Judy Price, NYS Extension Food Preservation Specialist, will teach the latest methods to ensure a safe and high quality home preserved food, as recommended by USDA. Four food preservation workshops will be held in August at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 249 Highland Avenue, Rochester. Hands-on, participatory workshops will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. The fee is $20 per session (as listed below). Pre-registration is required; call Lee at 461-1000 extension 226. more

Elvis Presley Festival set for August 11
Elvis Presley never visited Parma Center during his lifetime, but he'll be very much in evidence there on Saturday, August 11, when the Parma Meetinghouse Museum hosts an Elvis Festival from noon until 5 p.m. more

Fair expands Heritage Village for 2001
The Monroe County Fair and Recreation Association announces an expanded Heritage Village for the upcoming fair which runs August 1-5 at the fairgrounds in Henrietta. Begun last year, this festival within the fair focuses on the many cultures that have settled in Monroe County bringing with them their rich traditions, foods and music. Heritage Village brings them all together in a week long celebration of the community's diversity. The Fair Association has moved this venue to the front of the fairgrounds giving Heritage Village a featured position at the fair. more

Family celebrates decade birthdays
Mr. and Mrs. John Bauer of Ingamor Drive, Greece are hosting a birthday party for their children and offspring who are celebrating a decade birthday in the year 2001. more

Holley adds pageant to celebration
The Village of Holley will host a Sesquicentennial Queen Pageant to choose representatives from three age groups to reign over the Sesquicentennial Festivities on August 4. more

Hundreds attend Gioia
equipment and realty auction

By 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2001, vehicles - mostly pickup trucks - lined both sides of Curtis Road in Parma as far as the eye could see. People from as far away as Boston, Massachusetts were there for one of the largest farm auctions in this area of New York state - the Al Gioia real estate and orchard equipment auction. more

Knights charity Bike-A-Thon is successful
On Saturday, May 19, the skies cooperated for the fifth annual Knights of Columbus - St. Jude's Children's Hospital Bike-A-Thon at Hamlin Beach State Park. Almost 30 participants from Hamlin, Parma, Clarkson, Sweden, Kendall, LeRoy, and the city of Rochester combined their efforts to raise over $2,000. more

Local business participates in Congressional Cemetery Project
One Step Tree and Lawn Care of North Chili participated in the Professional Lawn Care Association of America's (PLCAA) Renewal and Remembrance project at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC on July 16 and 17. One Step Vice President Greg Adams and Tree Care Division Manager Rich Nelson joined other association members from across the country to help refurbish the deteriorating graveyard. more

New Brockport mayor holds first village board meeting
Brockport’s new mayor, Josephine Matela, presided over her first official board meeting, the annual meeting on July 16. Although most annual appointments were approved unanimously by the board, one in particular wasn’t. The position of Village Attorney, vacated by the resignation of Roy Heise as of July 1, was not filled. more

Paddlers travel canal waters for good cause
A 10-man canoe traveling 170 miles on the Erie Canal from North Tonawanda to Camp Good Days and Special Times on Keuka Lake added to the picturesque landscape of canal communities recently. more

Recognition honors community work
On Saturday, July 14, Ferris Goodridge Post #330 of the American Legion dedicated the grounds west of the Legion post on Trimmer Road in Spencerport as "Jerry Peck Memorial Field." The recognition was made in honor of the many years of service to the post by Gerald M. Peck who died recently. more

Romanian teens to visit Brockport area
Beginning July 24, 13 teenagers from Tigru Mures, Romania, will be enjoying the hospitality of Brockport area residents. For two weeks they will be guests of the youth group at Christ Community Church in Brockport. more

SUNY Brockport photographer wins national awards
Jim Dusen, manager of photographic services at SUNY Brockport, has received multiple awards at the 40th Annual Technical Symposium of the University Photographers' Association of America (UPAA), held at the Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, and at Bryce Canyon National Park, June 11-16. more

Traffic counts up in Spencerport
Has Spencerport experienced more traffic problems in recent years? Driving down Union Street (Rt. 259) at 5 p.m. one would certainly think so. Now, even the Village of Spencerport has its rush hours, when bumper-to-bumper traffic slows progress or halts it completely if the lift bridge over the Erie Canal is up. more

Churchville, Riga rail crossing work scheduled
Two railroad crossings in Churchville will be removed this week and replaced with a new rubber rail crossing. The Sanford Road crossing is scheduled for resurfacing on July 22 and the Main Street (Route 36) on July 23. Detours will be posted. more

Companies to work together on environmental investigation
G.E., Black and Decker and 3M have announced the reaching of an agreement to perform their respective environmental investigation activities together so as to minimize the impact of investigative procedures on the surrounding neighborhoods. Although most details of the agreement are confidential, according to 3M Regional Manager of Public Affairs Bill Nelson, it involves the sampling of Brockport Creek Tributary 3. more

Hilton student wins horse naming contest
Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn welcomed the newest addition to the stable of five horses that comprise the County's Mounted Unit and congratulated Allison Lynch for entering the winning name - Northern Reflection - in the recent 'Name the Horse Contest' sponsored by the Sheriff's Mounted Unit. The 11-year-old is entering 6th grade at Quest Elementary School in Hilton. more

Korean War Veterans dedicate park, highway
The Korean War Veterans Association, Monroe County Chapter #1, will be conducting a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, dedicating the "Korean War Commemorative Park" in remembrance of the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War, and will be renaming a portion of State Rt. 441 to the "Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway." more

Ogden road closed for bridge repair project
A section of Ogden Parma Town Line Road between Gallup Road and Washington Street in Ogden will be closed beginning at 9 a.m. July 30 for 12 weeks. more

Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance is driving for your support
The Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance (SVA) is conducting a dual campaign this summer. Their two goals are to bring on new volunteers and generate donations toward the purchase of new emergency vehicles. more

The Cobblestone Society plans annual fair
The 28th Annual Cobblestone Fair will be held Saturday, August 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Cobblestone Museum Grounds in Childs. The museum is at the juncture of Routes 98 and 104 (Ridge Road), two miles north of Albion. Dealers in antiques and collectibles, an Outdoor Cafe, White Elephant tables, and numerous other activities, together with free parking and free admission, will be ready to entice the visitor. more

Trail adopters wanted
Patterned after the "Adopt a Highway" program that helps keep roadside clear of litter and debris, the Canalway Trail Association is encouraging groups to "Adopt a Canal Trail." more

Turkey watchers are wanted
Volunteers are needed to help with the annual Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey during the month of August. The survey is done to collect data on the recent hatching success and turkey numbers in general. more

Grants for area localities announced
New York State Assemblyman Charles Nesbitt (R,C-Albion) has announced the recent award of several records mainte-nance/preservation grants to area localities. The grants, provided by the New York State Archives, a program of the State Education Department, are awarded to community organizations and localities to help them manage their records in the most efficient and effective manner. more

Brockport realigns elementary class sites
Major change at Brockport elementary schools is designed to help students meet the challenges of the New York State Learning Standards and assessments. Classes will be restructured across all three elementary schools, beginning with the opening of school, this September, according to school district representatives. All kindergarten and first grades will be at the Ginther School, all second- and third-grades at the Barclay School, and all fourth-and fifth-grades at the Hill School. more

Holley Student Council fundraising reaches far and wide
Each year, the Holley Middle School Student Council raises money through various activities throughout the school year, such as school dances. This year, students were able to raise $3,000 to benefit not only their school and the community, but the far reaches of the globe. more

Holley students practice math skills, raise money for St. Jude's Hospital
For the second year in a row, Linda Smith's sixth-grade math students participated in the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital Mathathon. The children were sponsored by relatives and friends, and then completed booklets of math problems. more

SUNY Brockport's Mexican tradition awarded grant
The SUNY Brockport Department of Art was recently awarded a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities in the amount of $2,928 to help support the sixth annual Day of the Dead celebration. more

Brockport teams play ball at Whited Complex
If baseball still reigns as the national pastime, it is nowhere more evident than at the Whited Baseball/Softball Complex on the SUNY Brockport Campus. Pristine fields of dreams they were this spring as the college teams boasted successful seasons and Section Five high school baseball was played there. more

Celebrities come to Brockport for golf tournament
Jim Kelly, Vince Gill and Lee Majors are just a few of the celebrities that will participate in the second annual celebrity Golf Tournament sponsored by the Brockport Country Club, Outback Steakhouse and Superior Interior Systems. The tournament will be held August 3, 4 and 5, with the celebrities "auctioned off" Friday night for Saturday and Sunday golf rounds. more

"End of Summer" programs offered through Hamlin Recreation
Several programs will be offered in August to wrap up the summer. Adults are invited to participate in flag football on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. from August 7 to August 30. The cost is $15 per person. Exercise classes are held every Monday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Hall. Classes offer aerobic exercise and conditioning. Cost is $2 at the door. more

Salmon Creek athletes net medals
Six members of the Salmon Creek Country Club Women's Tennis League in Spencerport returned home medal winners at the 2001 Empire State Senior Games. The games were held June 14-17 at LeMoyne College and Syracuse University. more

Spencerport has new volleyball coach
Michael Zeman has been named as Spencerport's new boys' varsity volleyball coach. He is a graduate of Webster High School where he was an all-state player. He received his M.S. degree in Kinesiology from Penn State where he played volleyball for two years. Zeman was also the assistant coach for the Penn State Women's Volleyball team for the last five years and was part of the Nittany Lions NCAA Division I Championship team in 1999. more

Spencerport resident places in Soapbox Derby
A Soap Box Derby car sponsored by Nazareth College and operated by a Spencerport eighth grader made good runs in the June Rochester area Soap Box Derby. more
