Canal initiative at critical juncture, planners say
The Planning Commission created by the State of New York to develop a management plan for the Western Erie Canal Heritage Corridor will hold its next public meeting in Buffalo. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, in the Harbor Room of HSBC Arena from 2 to 4 p.m. more

Community-minded church moves to Gates
Living Hope Community Church, formerly located in North Chili, has moved to what was once the Perk building at 765 Elmgrove Road. The church is renting a portion of the building in which to hold its service and youth group meetings. more

Legion Post in Parma to provide Blue Star Banners
In World War I, families who had members in the armed services hung a banner in their window. This banner was red with a white background and a blue star in the center. The number of stars on the banner symbolized the number of family members in service. more

Local band to participate in
pipe and drum parade in New York City

Members of the Rochester Scottish Pipe Band will join pipers and drummers from nearly every corner of the world as they take part in the largest pipe band and display of kilts ever, when they gather in New York City on April 6 to march in Scottish Power Tunes of Glory. more

New skate ramp welcomed in Parma
In "Field of Dreams," the movie concept was if you build it, they will come. The reality of the Parma Town Hall Skate Park facility is that skaters and skateboard enthusiasts have been enjoying the ramps and rails in large numbers since it opened in 1999, according to town representatives. more

Spencerport village tax rate remains stable
Spencerport Mayor Ted Walker and the Board of Trustees invite all interested persons to the Public Hearing to review the village's proposed Fiscal Year 2002/2003 budget. The public hearing will be held Wednesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. at Station 1 Fire Hall on Lyell Avenue. more

The Varsity Club at Brockport High School will be sponsoring the seventh annual Senior Citizen Prom. This year's Senior Citizen Prom will be at the new High School Cafeteria, 40 Allen Street, Brockport, on Saturday evening, April 27. more

Hunter Safety course scheduled
Instructors certified by the Department of Environmental Conservation will conduct a Hunter Safety Program April 15, 17 and 20 at Northstar Sportsman's Club. Parks Department offers clown school
The Monroe County Parks Department will be sponsoring "Clown School" classes in Greece Canal Park. Classes will be conducted by the "Send in the Clowns" clown troupe of Rochester. Classes will run every Monday night, April 22 through June 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rotary Lodge in Greece Canal Park. more

Spencerport community groundbreaking ceremony April 6
The Spencerport School District will break ground on the $46.9 million building project on Saturday, April 6 in a community ceremony. All community members are invited to attend. The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. at the west cafeteria of Spencerport High School, where residents will have an opportunity to learn more about the project. more

Nesbitt elected Assembly Republican Leader
State Assemblyman Charlie Nesbitt (R,C-Albion) was elected Assembly Republican Leader at a special leadership election in the State Capitol March 25. Nesbitt, 54, a former small businessman and a five-term Assemblyman, drew votes from both upstate and downstate members in his majority among the 53-member Republican Conference. He will succeed Assembly Republican Leader John J. Faso (R-Kinderhook), who is leaving the post on April 8. more

Hilton's Northwood Elementary School's after-school parent-child book discussion club, FIRST, (Families Invited to Read and Share Together) was started by parent Dorothy Distefano, right, to support and encourage family reading and literacy skills. more

CES students paint a 'Colt on Parade'
Fourth-grader MacKenzi Martin and Krista Beth Feltz discuss how to best paint the nose of a fiberglass colt. MacKenzi and a group of other students at Churchville-Chili's Chestnut Ridge Elementary School painted the colt, similar to the horses in Rochester's Horses on Parade. more

Career Day declared a success
Nearly 100 guest speakers from more than 70 organizations and companies volunteered their time to make Spencerport High School's Second Annual Career Day a success. Local television personalities, imaging specialists, entrepreneurs and public officials were among the visitors to the school on March 13. The goal of this event is to reinforce the concept of relevance for students. more

Swinging Saints Jazz Band performs at SUNY Fredonia
The Churchville-Chili Senior High Swinging Saints Jazz Band was invited to perform at the SUNY Fredonia Jazz Educators Days March 21. The band was selected to be the featured demonstration ensemble for workshops held during the day. The clinician was Dr. John Davis, director of Jazz Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder. more

C-C senior wins state gymnastics championship
Bright Raven gymnast Krystal Kaminski of Chili is a two time State Champion capturing first place in two events at the USA Gymnastics Level 9 State Meet held in Florida, New York, March 16. Her high score of 9.35 was good for first place in floor exercise and her 9.175 was also good for first in vaulting. more

Holley Hawks finish season 10-0
The Holley Hawks had another fantastic wrestling season as they captured the Section V Class C title once again. The wrestlers have been named Class C champions for four out of the past five years. more

Prep League especially for 13-year-old baseball players
Monroe County Babe Ruth announces the formation of its 13-year-old Prep League designed specifically for 13-year-old baseball players who want to experience Babe Ruth baseball at is best for the 2002 season. more
