Christmas at the Lighthouse October 12
This year marks the eighth annual "Christmas at the Lighthouse" event sponsored by the Friends of Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse. On Sunday, October 12 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse will be decorated for Christmas by area florists and open to the public for free tours. more

Clarkson Schoolhouse bell rings out again
If you go over to look at the Clarkson Schoolhouse these days, what you'll see is a very old, abandoned, two story building with its windows all boarded up. When you look up you'll see that the bell tower is off kilter and is leaning backward, making you wonder how much longer it is going to stay up there. The only sign of life around the school for the past 50 years has been the flocks of pigeons which roosted there and made it their home. more

Don Alhart to MC Lakeside's dinner with Rudy Giuliani
Don Alhart, associate news director and anchor of WOKR, Channel 13 News, will serve as Master of Ceremonies for Lakeside Foundation's 15th Annual Gala Dinner featuring Rudy Giuliani. This year's event will be held on Friday, December 5, at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. more

Local programs celebrate State Humanities month
The New York Council for the Humanities invites all New Yorkers to participate in State Humanities Month by attending one of the nearly 150 public programs supported by the Council statewide this October. More than $135,000 in grants were awarded across New York state. more

Local teen competes for Miss Teen Syracuse/Rochester title
Mallory M. Carter of Spencerport was selected to participate in Nationals' 2003 Miss Teen Syracuse/Rochester pageant competition October 19. She submitted an application and took part in an interview session that was conducted by Patty Neidert, this year's Syracuse/Rochester Pageant Coordinator. more

Free mammograms offered to the uninsured October 25
Unity Health System and the Women's Health Partnership will provide free mammograms to uninsured and under-insured women over 40 on Saturday, October 25 from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m. more

Have a hat or uniform with a history?
The Exhibit Committee of the Gates Historical Society is looking forward to the next exhibit at the Hinchey Homestead. The first fall exhibit will showcase the many hats that were inventoried when the house was purchased in 2002. Members are also hoping to include the community by creating a display of local hats with a history. more

Hilton Family Book Club hosts local writer

New law protects health of sexual assault survivors
Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester/Chili/Riga/Rush/Wheatland) said that the governor has signed into law legislation she authored to assure victims of sexual assault access to emergency contraception. more

C-C Lions' Leo Club elects officers, works on activities
The Churchville-Chili Leo Club, part of Lions Clubs International and sponsored by the Churchville Lions Club, elected the officers for the year: President - Jennifer Ponicsan, Vice President - Katie Van Duzer, Secretary - Jonathan (JJ) Jordan, Treasurer - Matt Duell, Club Historian - Jonathan McGhee. School advisors to the group are High School Librarian Peggy Fleming and Mary Rugg, a junior high school English teacher. more

Christian colleges featured at October 9 fair
Roberts Wesleyan College will host the Rochester Area Christian College Fair from 7 to 9 p.m. October 9 in the Family Life Center at Pearce Memorial Church, Buffalo Road, North Chili. Fliers for the event are available in the Office of Admissions. more

Hastings Foundation give Roberts Wesleyan $1M for academic building
Roberts Wesleyan College has received a $1 million gift from the Bob and Mary Hastings Foundation. The money will be used to create classrooms and other academic spaces in the current library building, which will be vacated with the construction of the B. Thomas Golisano Library and Information Resource Center in the next few years, college officials said. more

Hill Elementary School students
look to community for historical pictures

Fourth and fifth-graders at the Fred W. Hill School are creating a historical calendar and need the community's help. Students are looking for photographs featuring Brockport's historical people, places and events. Once the students have the photographs, they will do research and include important facts about Brockport's history in the calendar. more

Merton Williams Middle School students studying Family and Consumer Science were excited to learn about career opportunities in food service from Hilton Schools' Director of Food Service, Nancy Armocida. more

New school, new song
What better way to inaugurate a new school than to have a brand-new school song? Student singers Rachael Billitier, Emily Potter and Sarah Bowman, accompanied by Music Teacher Erin Sabourin, presented the world premiere of "Canal View Elementary" at the Canal View Elementary School ribbon cutting ceremony on September 20. more

The September 23 key conference volleyball match up proved to be a special night for head coach Jim Vanderhoof and the women's volleyball team. Not only did his Lady Raiders defeat Houghton College 3-1, but also gave him the 250th win of his career. more

RWC Women's soccer shuts out conference foe
The Roberts Wesleyan women's soccer team shut out conference rival Notre Dame Colleges 4-0 in women's soccer action on Saturday, September 27. The Lady Raiders were led by Stacey Patterson (Northstar Christian Academy) from Spencerport. more

Saints still perfect
Top-ranked Churchville-Chili and second-ranked Spencerport went head-to-head in boy's volleyball and the Saints swept 25-20, 25-18, 25-16 to extend their record this season to a perfect 12-0. more

Seven area players helping nationally ranked Brockport
The Brockport Golden Eagles football team is ranked in the top ten in the AFCA poll and they did nothing to jeopardize that ranking with a 37-14 domination over Frostburg State (MD) in their fourth game of the season. The roster is dotted with seven athletes from area high schools and several saw considerable action in the victory. more
