Hilton man makes sweet music
He may not be able to carry a tune, but John Richardson can build instruments that make music that is certainly sweet to the ear. Richardson, of Bennett Road in Hilton, has a passion for making rare instruments. The 54-year-old, self-employed father of two crafts harps, dulcimers, psalteries and thumb pianos to name a few. more

How far would you go for a friend?
Specialist Phil Dodson knows the answer to that question. His best pal, Corporal Joe Lombardi, went all the way to war with him. Lombardi was simply being a good friend when he agreed to join the army on the buddy plan with his friend Phil almost four years ago. Best friends since grade school, recent graduates from Spencerport High School, neither had found the right niche for their future and were struggling in dead-end jobs. Phil's father, Pete Dodson, strongly encouraged his son to join the military. Phil agreed if Joe would go, too. more

Parma Public Library will have
new schedule for youth programs 2004

The Parma Public Library announces a new schedule for youth programs starting in January 2004. The new schedule will provide programs for children as young as one year old through middle school and high school youth. more

Ronald McDonald House posts wish list
The Ronald McDonald House of Rochester is a home-away-from-home for the families of children receiving medical care in Rochester area hospitals. The generosity of the Rochester community helps provide food and lodging to these families in their time of crisis. more

Schumer, Clinton secure funds for Rural Opportunities Inc.
U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton have secured $250,000 for Rural Opportunities Inc. for its Upstate New York Community and Business Development Initiative. The funding was included in the Fiscal Year 2004 Omnibus Appropriations Bill conference report released by Congress. The report is expected to receive a final vote by the Senate by the end of January. more

Spencerport C of C to recognize award winners
Winners of the Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce's 2003 awards were recently announced. The awards will be presented at the chamber's annual awards dinner on Friday, January 30, at the Whittier Party House, 88 Whittier Road. more

All aboard! The Santa train is coming
The Santa train, run by the Medina Railroad Museum, will visit Brockport on Saturday and Sunday, December 20 and 21. The train departs from Park Avenue for the trip that runs from Brockport to Fancher. more

Choir adds to Spencerport's holiday event
For the past eight years, St. John's (Spencerport) Adult Choir has been participating in Christmas on the Canal, singing on Main Street. more

Cub Scouts send support
Fifty cub scouts in Chili Pack 275, together with their families, painted and decorated lawn signs at their monthly pack meeting to show their support of the troops. Each cub scout brought a sign home to place in his yard. more

Riga building dedication, recreation master plan review dates set
The new Riga Town Hall dedication is set for Saturday, January 17. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. with an Open House until noon. The town offices have been moved to 6460 Buffalo Road, Churchville, New York 14428. more

Snowmobile Safety Certification course offered in Brockport
The New York State Park Police will be holding a one day snowmobile safety certification course for youth Saturday, January 17, 2004. The course is targeted for young persons ages 10 to 18. more

Spencerport VFD gets new pumper
A new pumper has joined the fleet of equipment at Spencerport Volunteer Fire Department. The new truck, number 2912, manufactured by Pierce, carries 750 gallons of water, can pump a minimum of 1,500 gpm and has an eight kilowatt generator. more

Sweden/Clarkson Community Center
establishes inclement weather policy, procedure

The Sweden/Clarkson Community Center has developed its policy and procedures for inclement weather conditions. The community center will be closed anytime the town offices are closed. All cancellations of programs will be announced on WHAM 1180. more

Tax hike seen for Bergen residents
Town of Bergen officials approved the 2004 budget that calls for a tax rate for both village and outside the village taxpayers. A 6 cent increase was called for, bringing the tax rate to $2.14 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. more

Wal-Mart Supercenter's scope proposal not accepted
Saying they needed further information on traffic and drainage issues, officials on Sweden's zoning board didn't accept Wal-Mart's Draft Environmental Impact Survey. more

Wal-Mart supporters hand in over 2,100 signatures
Brockport Residents Encouraging Commerce (BREC), a local group formed to support the Wal-Mart Supercenter application, recently handed in over 2,100 petition signatures to the Sweden Planning Board. more

A giving spirit at Hilton schools
Throughout the Hilton School District this holiday season, students and staff members have been busy elves, according to Hilton Character Education Coordinator Jodi McKain. Donations of toys, games, stuffed creatures, food, mittens, hats and gloves overflow around a tree in the lobby of Northwood Elementary School where Student Council members have spearheaded the effort. more

Senior High School FIRST Robotics Team

Bausch and Lomb (B&L), will sponsor the 2003-2004 Churchville-Chili Senior High School FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Team. The FIRST Robotics team is an extracurricular activity at Churchville-Chili Senior High School and focuses on engineering and design. more

Emergency shelter volunteers in training
Thanks to a New York State Learn and Serve grant for the 2003-2004 school year, Byron-Bergen students in grades 7-12 are being trained as American Red Cross emergency shelter volunteers. more

Former BOCES 2 students create SKillsUSA VICA club at college
Rob VanSkiver and Matt Huber, graduates of Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Career and Technical Education Center and second year students in the Air Conditioning Engineering and Technology program at SUNY Canton, have organized a SkillsUSA VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) club at college. more

Hilton Board of Education appoints new member
At its November 18 meeting, the Hilton Central School District Board of Education appointed Steve Beauvais, Project Manager at the N.Y.S. Department of Transportation, to fill the remainder of the term vacated by board member Dale Beehler last July. more

Hilton High School senior Cory Gagnon has been selected to attend the International Model United Nations in The Hague, Netherlands January 20-February 4, 2004. more

Natural Helpers selected at Hilton High School
This fall, 19 Hilton High School students were selected by their peers as persons to whom students "would go to if they had a problem and needed someone they could trust," according to advisors Shirley Abrams, School Counselor, and Nancy Lewthwaite, Park Ridge Youth Outreach Counselor. more

begins Advent Service Project

Students at St. John the Evangelist School in Greece bring the holiday spirit of caring for others to school during Advent. Each morning following the opening prayer and pledge to the flag, students and staff bring food, paper, and personal products to the main office and place them in holiday wrapped boxes. more

Chili Senior Center supports
Lakeside Health System

To help celebrate the happiness of a baby's birth, the Chili Senior Center "Chain Gang" donated baskets of goodies for the new moms at Lakeside Hospital. The baskets each contain a hand crocheted blanket, toy, other infant products and a lot of love. more

Baseball's best comes home to CCSHS to play
Houston Astro's starting pitcher and Churchville-Chili graduate Tim Redding (center) made a recent surprise visit to Churchville-Chili Senior High School. Redding joined in the homecoming festivities and played first base for the faculty in the senior versus faculty softball game. more

Bees & Eagles battle to tie
Six forfeits, six pins by Kendall and two more by Byron-Bergen led to a 42-42 tie as the two rivals battled in high school wrestling. The Bees were awarded the victory however, when a Kendall wrestler was disqualified for a "flagrant misconduct" during the match. more

C-C Sport Boosters sponsor Buy-A-Brick Campaign
The new stadium-athletic complex at Churchville-Chili High School includes a brick walkway from the stadium to the parking lot. The Churchville-Chili Sports Booster Club is offering a "Buy A Brick" campaign for the construction of this walkway. more

Hanscomb win leads Brockport
Hilton graduate Pat Hanscomb defeated Kendall native Troy Tooley in overtime and Danny Song registered the only home team pin as 4th ranked Brockport defeated Cortland 31-3 in college wrestling. more

Local students feature in successful woodsmen season
The endurance crosscut sawing pair, Jason Stekyl (Hemlock) and Mike Ottley (Churchville) ran an undefeated season in competitions with Syracuse Environmental Science and Forestry, Paul Smith's College, SUNY Cobleskill and the SUNY Ranger School at Wanakena. more

Smith nets 22 in Bees opening win
Rachel Smith scored 22 points, including three three-pointers in the first quarter, to lead Byron-Bergen to a 57-19 win over Holley in the girls basketball season opener. The Bees are defending their 2002-03 division crown and having reached the sectional semi-finals one season ago. more

Spencerport teams qualify for scholar awards
Eight Spencerport fall athletic teams qualified for the NYSPHSAA Team Scholar Athlete Award during the fall 2003 season. In order to qualify, a team must have a team grade point average of 90 percent or above. more

Terenzi wins 100th as Rangers romp
Senior Mike Terenzi won the 100th match of his high school career and Eric Piedmonte registered the only pin of the match as four-time state champion Spencerport defeated Greece Olympia 36-15 in high school wrestling. more
