Annual beach clean-up campaign seeks volunteers
For the 19th year, the New York Chapter of the American Littoral Society is seeking volunteers to participate in a beach clean-up event. The day long activity will take place at more than 300 beaches state wide on September 18. (Rain date September 19). more

The Apple of My Eye Photo Contest at this year's Hilton Apple Fest, October 2-3, is extending a "call for entries" for photographs. This year, photographs of any theme or subject matter are welcome. more

Brockport group prepares for 'Stone Soup' auction
Beautification of Brockport is on the agenda as members of the Brockport Arts and Aesthetics committee pull together pieces of art for their Stone Soup Auction. "The auction idea was brought up as a way to be able to pay for a Bill Stewart sculpture," project director Lori Skoog said. more

Eastern Star Chapter #440 celebrates birthday
Members of Mary Jane Holmes Chapter #440 Order of the Eastern Star of Brockport celebrated their 95th birthday with a dinner at 58 Main Street Restaurant and Party House in Brockport. Members and guests enjoyed a dinner and entertainment of the 1909 vintage. more

Farmers' Library establishes memorial book fund
The Clara Wilder Memorial Book Fund has been established by the trustees of the Ogden Farmers' Library. The fund will be used to collect donations given to the library by those who wish to honor the memory of a loved one, or by those who simply wish to make a donation to the library. more

Hilton CSD taxpayers to see lower than expected rate
Taxpayers in the Hilton Central School District will see tax rates that are slightly lower than the district originally anticipated when it prepared its budget for the 2004-05 school year. During the budget process, officials approved an amended budget to accommodate two teaching positions due to an increase in student enrollment. more

Household hazardous waste collection set
The county's Department of Environmental Services (DES) and the towns of Chili, Gates, Riga and Wheatland and the village of Scottsville have joined forces to hold an appointment only household hazardous waste (HHW) collection at the Gates Highway Garage, 475 Trabold Road, on Saturday, September 18 from 8 a.m. to noon. more

Hunting Education classes scheduled
The schedule for sportsmen education classes to be held in Monroe County was announced by Assemblyman Bill Reilich's office. All new hunters and trappers must pass the appropriate course before qualifying for their first license. more

Lakeside/BISCO Duck Derby winners
More than 4,600 ducks were released into the Erie Canal in Brockport for the Duck Derby, a part of the Brockport Summer Art Festival. The crowd of duck "owners" cheered on their ducks as they raced to the finish line. more

New book offerings for Parma Public Library's adult book discussion
The Parma Public Library invites all interested adults to the library on Tuesday, September 21 at either 2 or 7 p.m. to join in on the discussion of Life of Pi by Yann Martel. In this work of fiction, 16-year-old Pi and his parents set out for Canada aboard a Japanese cargo ship. more

Peddler's Market offers unique items in fundraiser sale
For more than 30 years, the Peddler's Market in Brockport has drawn the crowds to the grounds of the Morgan Manning House. "I think it originally started out as a novelty," Historian Eunice Chesnut, historian of the House said. "Now people keep coming back because of the impressive inventory of items for sale. more

Port of Call Community Players elects officers
The Spencerport area's new community theater group, the Port of Call Community Players, elected officers for the coming year: Phill Langton, president; John Goehle, first vice president; Jason Treadwell, second vice president; Meridith Dillman, treasurer; and Aileen Sousa, secretary. Elected to the Board of Directors were: Terry Hedges, Heidi Kozireski, Gay and Don Lenhard and Lory Restivo. more

Sweden reforms garage sale law
It's unfair to punish many for the actions of a few. That was the sentiment offered by Town of Sweden resident Valerie Sarsfield during Sweden's public hearing on a proposed amendment to its one-year old garage sale law. more

Sweden updates dog penalty, kennel fees
Fines for dog control violations and kenneling fees were increased by Town of Sweden officials following a public hearing on August 24. more

District Governor visits Holley Rotary Club
District 7090 Governor Charlotte Herlong visited the Holley Rotary Club. She is from the Fredonia Rotary Club and is District 7090's first female governor. Before the local club meeting, Herlong met with Club President Gary Ahl and his executive board to review the club's accomplishments for the past year and its goals for the coming year. more

Small business growth plans outlined
Charles H. Nesbitt (139th District) outlined his plan to help small businesses grow and create jobs in Western New York. In a breakfast address to members of the National Federation of Independent Business, Nesbitt said that Assembly Republicans have made job growth in New York "job one" on their list of legislative priorities. more

The Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Board of Education elected George Howard as president and R. Charles Phillips as vice president of the board for the 2004-2005 school year. more

Churchville-Chili Junior High will have new interim principal
David Hamilton will serve as the interim junior high school principal at Churchville-Chili. Hamilton joined Churchville-Chili Central School district (CCCSD) in 2000 as director of music and performing arts and for the last two years, he was the Director of Student Performance. more

GCC's Center for the Arts features Blues artist
The Genesee Center for the Arts kicks off its 13th season with legendary blues singer Rory Block on Friday, September 24 at 8 p.m. in the Stuart Steiner Theatre. A four time W.C. Handy award-winning artist, Block works to preserve the Delta blues tradition for 21st Century audiences. more

Murals bring books to life
Maureen Peer, a June graduate of Spencerport High School, poses with a mural from the book, The Gardener by Sarah Stewart that she painted this summer at the William C. Munn Elementary School. Student volunteers recreated scenes from popular children's books as a way to promote literacy and books in an entertaining way. more

Spencerport reorganizes school administration
The Spencerport Central School Board of Education has approved the recommendation of Superintendent Phillip W. Langton to reorganize the district's administrative leadership to provide greater support for student academic achievement, according to a press release from the district. more

Hilton-Parma seniors plan trip
Members of the Hilton-Parma Senior Center will be traveling by luxury bus coach to Toronto for a guided tour. The tour begins with lunch at the CN Tower and a stop at the Observation Deck. Entrée choices are boneless half chicken with herbs or grilled Atlantic salmon. Following lunch the group will re-board the coach and travel through the city. more

Programs offered at Sweden Senior Center
Eye-Opener Support Group meets monthly at the Sweden Senior Center. People with various eye-related problems come to share their experiences with the loss of sight and how they are coping. more

With nine starters returning on the offensive side of the ball and seven on the defense, the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles are one of just five teams in the country entering this season looking to make the NCAA Division III playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. more

Hilton-Parma Recreation holds archery program
Six young archers successfully completed a summer target archery program coordinated by Coach Bert Marlatt and organized by Hilton-Parma Recreation. Participants shoot several arrows at distances of 40, 50 and 60 yards. The program is modeled after the same event held at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens. more

Coach Greg Gidman is back for his 11th season as head coach and features one of his best recruiting classes along with several stabilizing veterans. The Raiders were 11-10-2 overall last season and 5-3 in league play. more
