Cluster housing zoning allows a developer to build houses on smaller lots than allowed under single-family zoning in exchange for leaving part of the property undeveloped in perpetuity. more

Brockport turns out for first candlelight walk
When Inga Songbird, a relative newcomer to the Brockport community, first started talking about a community candlelight walk to benefit the local food shelf, her friends' responses were not all that enthusiastic. "You'll be lucky to get 25 people to come out," she was told. more

Brockport Village Board considers
purchasing abandoned King Street building
The former Shakers Bar building on King Street in the Brockport business district has been empty for just over two years. The bar was originally closed down for Alcohol Beverage Control law violations and was foreclosed upon by Monroe County earlier this year for back taxes in the amount of about $100,000. more

Churchville officials break ground for village hall project
Village Clerk Sue Davis, Trustee Nancy Steedman, Mayor Donald Ehrmentraut, Trustee Marian Gowan, Trustee Lyle Warren and Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Official Tom Williamson braved the snow December 5 to hold the official groundbreaking for the new Churchville Village Hall. more

Don't forget the Brockport-Sweden Toy Shelf
On December 16 and 17, several hundred area parents will be able to pick out a new toy or two for each of their children at the Brockport-Sweden Toy Shelf. The mission of the toy shelf is to ensure that all local children be remembered with a gift for Christmas when their parents, for whatever reason, are unable to provide gifts. By inviting the parents to do the "shopping" themselves, a good match between child and toy can be made. more

Four municipalities to study feasibility of community center
The leaders of four communities – Brockport, Sweden, Clarkson and Hamlin – are in the process of appointing a committee to study the feasibility of building a joint community center. more

Lift Bridge Books honors area authors at open house
On Sunday, December 17 from 2 to 4 p.m., Lift Bridge Book Shop, 71 Main Street, Brockport will host area authors, including Eunice Chesnut, Rich and Sue Freeman, Andy Olenick, Richard Reissem, Anne Panning, Tad Clements, E. Robert Fussell, Kevin Scott Munnings, Shirley Cox Husted, Phillip Tomasso III, Paul Humphrey, Harvey Botzman, Donald Seyerle and Bill Hullfish. more

Local residents will be part of International Parade
Ten youth and five adults from churches in the Hilton area will be going to Pasadena, California to be Petal Pushers, a group of 5,000 volunteers from around the country who work on final decoration of the floats built by Phoenix Decorating Company. more

Monroe County flu shot update
Several flu clinics have been scheduled as a result of the arrival of additional vaccine. The Monroe County Flu Coalition has been meeting regularly to plan for the best use of the limited amount of flu vaccine that has been available to date. Highest risk individuals have been given priority and thousands of doses of vaccine have been voluntarily re-distributed to nursing homes and physician's offices by coalition organizations. more

Spencerport Ambulance makes plea for volunteers
Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance Service Inc. (SVA) responds to 900 to 1,100 calls every year with only 39 active members. "Some of our older members have retired and the others have only so much time they can give," said SVA President Glenn Granger. That is why the organization is hoping it can attract new volunteers who are willing to put in the time for training, then devote at least ten hours a month to the service. more

SpenceRPOrt concert series deadline is December 15
Members of the Spencerport community are invited to participate in the fourth SpenceRPOrt Concert Connection Series. This special music education program is offered in conjunction with the Spencerport Central Schools, the Spencerport Music Association and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO). more

Anonymous donor provides holiday book give-away
The Newman Riga Library will be giving away holiday books to lucky children during the month of December due to the generosity of an anonymous donor. A drawing for children will be held in the library every week through December 31. more

Brockport area burglary ring apprehended
Four suspects in a rash of burglaries on Brockport’s west side have been arrested by village police. According to Brockport Police Chief Gary Zimmer, attorneys for the four men waved preliminary hearings and are now preparing for a grand jury hearing. more

"Gift of Warmth" needed for cold weather
The cold weather takes a toll on the neediest members of the community, who often do not have the warm winter clothing necessary in greater Rochester. The "Gift of Warmth" program helps provide outerwear for needy children and adults. more

Scholarships available for DEC Summer Camp
The Department of Environmental Conservation is taking reservations for their educational summer programs. The DEC runs one week encampments for boys and girls ages 12 to 17 at three locations in the state. more

Thruway exit study group to meet
The Technical Advisory Group, a committee charged with studying the feasibility of a thruway exit on Union Street, will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 11 in the large conference room at the Chili Town Hall. more

The Churchville-Chili Junior High Leo Club has started its fourth year of activities and community service. The club started the new school year by assisting the Churchville Lions at the Fairbanks Road school welcoming picnic. more

Churchville-Chili music director retires
The Churchville-Chili community will be honoring Ron Cicero, the recently retired director of music and performing arts in the Churchville-Chili district. There will be a retirement party for him on January 11. more

Hilton High School National Honor Society inducts 62 new members
On November 19, the Hilton High School Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 62 new members in ceremonies held at the high school. Welcomed by NHS President Lora Magliocco and Hilton High School Principal David Dimbleby, the new members were administered a membership oath based on NHS Criteria of membership: scholarship, character, leadership and service. more

Hilton students winners in story contest
Hilton Village Elementary School students Paul Campbell, Aaron Mika and Keith Polatas were named winners in the "Fall Story Contest" sponsored by Lift Bridge Kids bookstore in Brockport. more

Holley inducts 28 students into National Honor Society
On November 22, Holley High School held a ceremony to induct 28 students into the local chapter of the National Honor Society. more

Blue Devils Hockey wins two
St. Francis of Buffalo scored the first goal four minutes in the game, but it woke the Blue Devils up as they rattled off five unanswered goals enroute to a 5-1 win November 29 at SUNY Brockport. more

Geneva tops Churchville-Chili
In the third game of the young 2000-01 season, the Saints lost their second game in a row to Geneva-Desales 6-1 November 28 at Scottsville Arena. Devin Poole had a hat trick, two of the shorthanded variety, and a four-point game to lead Geneva. more

Rangers drop volleyball league opener
The Spencerport Rangers girls' varsity volleyball team lost to Irondequoit in its league opener in three straight games. more

Rangers Hockey loses to Irondequoit
The Irondequoit Indians were picked as one of the pre-season favorites to win the Section Five hockey title, but they weren't able to steamroll over the Rangers in a 5-1 win November 29 at SUNY Brockport. more

Spencerport hosts Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament
The Spencerport School District hosts the 4th annual Coaches vs. Cancer Basketball Tournament at Nazareth College on December 27 and 28. Last year's event netted a $6,000 donations to the American Cancer Society. This year's goal is $7,500. more

Spencerport Central Schools Department of Physical Education and Athletics has announced that each of its athletic teams will be participating in a volunteer community service/charity project during the 2000-2001 school year. more
