Brockport residents pack village hall to discuss new development
Brockport residents overflowed the public meeting room on March 12 to get a look at conceptual plans for a new subdivision on the south side of East Avenue just east of the Havenwood tract. Brockport Planning Board Chairman Tom Hare said it was the largest crowd he has seen in his years on the board. more

Churchville Chamber dinner spotlights award winners
Good food, bad jokes and sentimental speeches marked the Churchville Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards Dinner March 8, when John Casey was honored as Citizen of the Year, Jim Fitzsimmons as Businessperson of the Year, and Wendy and Andrew Catalina, owners of Babe’s Unisex Salon, were given the Civic Beatification award. more

Historic preservation efforts continue along Brockport's canalside
The Village of Brockport has been notified that 60 Clinton Street, Fay's Garage, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 22. This completes another step in the village's effort to develop its canal front. more

Two incumbents are seeking election to two-year terms in the village of Holley’s uncontested race. more

No opposition for Spencerport Village Board incumbents
Spencerport Mayor Theodore Walker, Trustee Theodore Rauber and Trustee Tim Peer will each be unopposed in their bids for another four-year term in village elections Tuesday, March 20. more

Restricted business use rezoning approved by Ogden town council
A rezoning application tabled since a public hearing September 13, 2000 was approved by a vote of 4 to 1 at the Wednesday, March 14 meeting of the Ogden Town Board. more

Riga reconsiders municipal building plans
Riga Town Council members may head back to the drawing board after a proposal to build a new $1.9 million municipal building adjacent to the existing town highway garage on East Buffalo Street drew criticism from residents at a public information meeting March 13. more

Sweden reassessment complaints surprisingly few
Most Sweden property owners received their new assessments a little over a week ago. The staff of Cole, Layer and Trumble, the firm hired by the town to conduct the first reassessment in 30 years, braced themselves last week for an onslaught of complaints. To their surprise, the number of property owners disputing their new assessments has been low. more

Sweden receives tower application
SBA and Cingular Wireless have applied to the Town of Sweden for permission to erect a 100 foot tall telecommunications tower at 441 Sweden-Ogden Townline Road. more

Brockport to offer Citizens Police Academy
The Brockport Police Department and the University Police Department from the State University College at Brockport will be sponsoring a Citizens Police Academy beginning April 3. The class will be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for five weeks from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Classes will be held at SUNY Brockport, exact location to be determined at a later date. more

An estimated 200 historians are expected to attend the Spring Conference of the Association of Public Historians of New York State (APHNYS) in Rochester from March 29 through March 31. The conference will be held at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel. more

Sweden schedules park plan meeting
The Town of Sweden will hold a public information meeting regard adoption of a master plan for the town park on March 27 at 7 p.m. in the courtroom at the Sweden Town Hall, 18 State Street. more

Traffic Safety Award presented to Chili resident
Supervisor Steve Hendershott has announced that Chili resident Fred Trott has won a Community Service Award for 2001. This award was presented on Tuesday, March 6 by the Monroe County Traffic Safety Board at its award ceremony at the Party House. more

celebrate success at Scholastic Art Show

Several Churchville-Chili Senior High School art students were honored at the 2001 Scholastic Art Awards and Exhibition, this year held at Rochester Institute of Technology. This exhibition, launched in 1923 by Scholastic Inc. to encourage and reward creativity in our nation's classrooms, offers regional and national recognition for talented visual art students. This year's exhibition featured more than 1,200 works from the Rochester/Finger Lakes ten-county region. more

Dialogue on diversity at C-C Jr. High
The Churchville-Chili School District's K-12 Committee on Multicultural Understanding is hosting an open dialogue on diversity. The committee is inviting students and parents to discuss what the district does well in regard to dealing with diversity. In addition, the dialogue will be a forum in which to address concerns related to cultural, racial and religious biases. The committee is also asking for suggestions to improve ways in which diversity issues are addressed. more

Hilton Board of Education petitions available
The Hilton Board of Education will have three positions on its seven-member board open this May for election at the Annual Budget Vote May 15. To become a candidate for the Board, interested Hilton School District residents must submit a petition to the Hilton Board Clerk in the West Avenue Building, 225 West Avenue, Hilton by April 16. more

Hilton Parent University accepts walk-in registration
Parent University, a conference for parents, teachers, grandparents, caregivers and community members, will be held Saturday, March 24, at Hilton High School, 400 East Avenue, Hilton. Over 50 different seminars, workshops and vendors will be on hand as well as a keynote address, lunch and entertainment. more

Hilton Teacher of the Year nominations due April 13
The Hilton Central Schools' Teachers Association is seeking nominations for the 2001-02 teacher of the year. Eligible are all Hilton School District teachers who have taught for at least five years, according to Tom Dowd, Hilton High School chemistry teacher and chair of the selection committee. more

Holley students participate in spelling bee
Eight Holley fourth and fifth-graders were among the competitors in the Niagara District Parent-Teacher Association Spelling Bee in Starpoint, New York on March 17. Students from 15 schools in Niagara, Orleans and Genesee Counties participated in the event. more

Kendall choral students perform at national level
Two Kendall students took their singing voices on the road this month. Freshman Kate Lape was selected to perform in the American Choral Directors' Association (ACDA) National Middle School Honor Choir on March 16 in San Antonio, Texas. more

New member appointed to C-C Board of Education
Kathleen Dillon has been appointed to the Churchville-Chili Board of Education, taking the seat vacated by Lynn Baker, who resigned November 23. Dillon is a social worker at Fingerlakes Developmental Disability Service Office. She and her husband, Jeff, have been residents of the district since 1984. They have two daughters, Mary Beth, who attends the junior high, and Molly, in the middle school. more

Spencerport school report card shows improvement
Initiatives begun in the past few years are showing results as Spencerport students improve in key areas measured by the State Education Department. The 1999-2000 New York State School Report Card was just released March 14. more

Upcoming Hilton Board of Education meetings
focus on budget proposal, scope of capital project
At their regular Tuesday meeting, March 27, the Hilton Board of Education will get its first glimpse of the scope of a possible capital project to be presented to voters in December. And, at a special meeting on Monday, March 26, the board will hear the first detailed presentation concerning the 2001-02 Budget Proposal. more

Hawaiian Luau for area senior citizens
Students in the New Visions program through Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES will bring a "taste" of Hawaii to the Sweden Senior Center. Amber Wakley (Brockport H.S.) and Angela Persia (Holley H.S.) are coordinating a Hawaiian Luau for area senior citizens as part of a community outreach project. The luau will be at the Sweden Senior Center, 133 State Street, Brockport on Sunday, March 18, 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. more

Hilton-Parma Seniors plan trip
The Hilton-Parma Seniors have scheduled their first trip of the season on Friday, April 20 to Casino Niagara in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Included in this trip is round-trip transportation, driver gratuity, five hours of time at Casino Niagara, and the current casino bonus of $10 per person. There will be an "on your own" dinner stop en route home. more

Basketball competition brings March Madness to Churchville area
The Fourth Annual Charity Basketball Game between the Churchville Chili Leo Club and the Churchville Lions Club will be held on Sunday, March 18 at 1 p.m. in the Junior High gym. This year's benefit will be Alternatives for Battered Women. more

Black belts earn degrees from Caparco's Martial Arts
Kyoshi Mark Caparco has announced several prominent promotions earned in karate and Aiki Jujutsu. more

Bright Raven gymnasts compete in Niagara Cup
The Bright Raven Girls Gymnastics teams competed in the 20th annual Niagara Cup held at Canisius College in Buffalo March 9-11 earning many honors. more

Girls U14 Travel wins tournament
The Girls Under 14 Travel team of the Spencerport Soccer Club recently won the championship in the indoor 2001 Presidents Day Soccer Tournament at Salmon Creek Country Club. The team competed against other travel clubs from Greece, Brockport and Kendall. more

Lady Saints Soccer conduct camp
The Churchville-Chili Girls Soccer Program is currently conducting a soccer camp for girls in grades K-3. The camp, in its first year, has an enrollment of 47 girls. Varsity Coach Nancy Thornton is the camp's director. She is assisted by fifteen Junior Varsity and Varsity Lady Saints Soccer players. The high school players provide leadership and act as role models for the camp participants. more

Post-season awards announced
The post-season awards are beginning to roll in for the Ogden Bears' teams, cheerleaders and football players from the 2000 season. more

Spencerport 'Toys for Sports' fundraiser April 7
The Spencerport Sports Boosters Club's fundraiser, Toys for Sports, is scheduled for Saturday, April 7 at Cosgrove Middle School. The toy show and auction, featuring antique and modern toys, sports cards and collectibles, will benefit the district's athletic programs. more

SUNY Brockport men's basketball finishes its sweet season
For the second time in the last five years, the SUNY Brockport men's basketball team fell in the "Sweet 16" round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament, falling to Catholic University 69-64. Brockport finishes its season 21-9. more
