The Village of Brockport has decided to pursue the formation of a municipal gas and electric service with the help of Power Alternatives. The formation of the municipal utilities is subject to a public referendum. more

Developer asks Brockport to annex property
Rich Miller, local real estate broker and property manager, has asked the Village of Brockport to annex a 5.6 acre parcel of land located on the south side of Holley Street. The land abuts the village on the property’s east border but is located outside the village limits in the Town of Sweden. more

Holley's Hurd Orchards goes international
Working hand-in-hand with the earth and with its ancient energy has long been the philosophy of Sue Hurd Machamer and her daughter, Amy Machamer. Even though the owners of Hurd Orchards recently inked a business deal with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc., it will not change the essence of who they are and what they do, they said. more

Local congregation begins 50-Day Spiritual Adventure
The members of Spencerport Wesleyan Church are planning to "see the unseen Christ" for eight weeks - to explore how awareness of Jesus' presence transforms the way people live. They'll be working together on a 50-Day Spiritual Adventure called "Seeing the Unseen Christ: How His Presence Transforms Life." more

Nativity School celebrates 125 years
On January 10, 1876, the Sisters of the Order of St. Joseph opened the doors of the Nativity School to 150 expected students. One hundred and twenty-five years later, the current 132 students, their families, the parish and the school staff will commemorate the landmark anniversary of Brockport’s Catholic school. more

Parking violators in Spencerport village could now be ticketed
The Spencerport Village Board of Trustees passed its first new local law of the year January 3, giving the village code enforcement officer the authority to write tickets for parking violations on village streets and in municipal parking lots. more

Nationally-known Catholic Christian entertainer, Doug Brummel, will share his "Lighten Up" presentation at St. John's in Spencerport on January 21, 22 and 23; 7 to 8:45 p.m. Brummel will present a light-hearted, yet inspiring look at family experiences, the Catholic faith, and the joy of the Gospel. Sweden gives offices name change, face lift
It’s been seven months since the Village of Brockport moved out of the Sweden-Brockport Municipal Building at 18 State Street into the Seymour Building at 49 State Street. The public eye has been aimed mostly at the village’s new offices and the restoration of the historic 1824 Second Empire building. Yet the Town of Sweden has been busy too, sprucing up its offices and reconfiguring how its space is used. more

Wegmans baking contest finalists announced
The search for the great cooks of tomorrow has been narrowed to 56 area kids who will compete at the Wegmans Food You Feel Good About/Pillsbury Kids Bake-Off® Contest at The Strong Museum, One Manhattan Square, on January 20. The competition will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., with the winner being announced at 3 p.m. more

Cool Kids awarded community arts grant
The Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester and Rochester Area Community Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2001 Community Arts Grants. Grants totaling $112,000 will be made to 47 nonprofit organizations and artists from Monroe and surrounding counties. Among the winners is Cool Kids in the Park 2001 for its innovative, 11-week summer series of free arts and cultural offerings to the public. more

County holds farmland preservation meeting
The Monroe County Department of Planning and Development and the U.S.D.A.-Natural Resources Conservation Service will hold a meeting on Tuesday, January 23, at Cornell Cooperative Extension to teach how purchase of the development rights and conservation easement programs are used to preserve farmland in the county. more

Ghost Ships make appearance at Seymour Library
A follow up to the presentation of "The Ghost Ships of Lake Ontario" by Jim Fischer will be held Thursday, January 18 at 7 p.m. at the Seymour Library. Fischer will show 80 underwater slides of the Hamilton and the Scourge as they lay under 300 feet of water in Lake Ontario. more

Host families needed for children from Belfast, Northern Ireland
The Irish Children's Program of Rochester brings children, ranging from 10 to 14 years old, from Belfast, Northern Ireland to spend about five weeks of the summer with families in the Rochester area. more

Lollypop Farm West celebrates
Lollypop Farm West at the R.C. Steele Warehouse on Transit Way in Brockport will celebrate a year of 1,200 successful pet adoptions on Saturday, January 13. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. for the newly-expanded kennels. more

Monroe County Library System takes overdue materials seriously
The Monroe County Library, which includes the Ogden Farmers' Library in Spencerport, has contracted with a collection agency to assist in recovering overdue materials and unpaid fines. more

Otetiana Council to host international scouts
The Otetiana Council of the Boy Scouts of America has been requested to host seven international scouts from Iceland as part of their contingents to the 2001 National Scout Jamboree. The Jamboree, the first of the new century, will take place at Fort A.P. Hill in Caroline County, Virginia. Registration for the Jamboree nationally has exceeded all expectations, resulting in the addition of a Sub-Camp, bringing the total to twenty. more

Next month, the Churchville-Chili Board of Education begins the process of developing a budget for the 2001-2002 school year. more

District residents are invited to attend the January 22 meeting of the Community Dialogue Committee. The committee is made up of community residents who help the district shape its school to career program. more

Genesee Community College puts finishing touches
on January 9 Open House, 'Instant Admit' Day
Genesee Community College staff members are putting the finishing touches on the college's Open House and "Instant Admit" Day, scheduled Tuesday, January 9. The event is expected to draw more than 100 visitors to the Batavia Campus and to Campus Centers located in Lakeville, Albion, Warsaw and Arcade. more

New kindergarten registration procedure in place in C-C schools
The Churchville-Chili School District has a new procedure intended to streamline kindergarten registration. All district residents will now register their incoming kindergarten children at the district's Central Office, 139 Fairbanks Road. Parents will receive registration packets in the mail. Anyone who does not receive a packet but who needs one, can call 293-1800, ext. 2041. Registration will not be accepted at any of the C-C elementary schools. more

Chili Senior Center programs
•Mall Walking - at Marketplace Mall every Tuesday morning during the winter months. Transportation provided from the Senior Center. The bus leaves the center at 8:30 a.m. and returns approximately 11 a.m. Participants will have 1 1/2 hours to walk at their own pace and visit with others. $1 per week. PACE exercise program offered at Sweden Senior Center
Beginning Wednesday, January 10 at 10 a.m., the Sweden Senior Center will begin a new program designed for those with arthritis to exercise under the guidance of a specially trained instructor. PACE (People with Arthritis Can Exercise) is a nationally recognized land-based exercise program for people with arthritis and related conditions. more

Basketball Free-Throw Contest open to boys and girls
St. Leo's Knights of Columbus, in conjunction with Hilton-Parma Recreation, is offering a free-throw contest for boys and girls ages 10-14 on Saturday, January 13 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Merton Williams Junior High School in the village of Hilton. more

Blue Devils finish third in holiday tourney
After losing to Webster 4-1 in the first round of the Brockport-Spencerport Christmas Tournament, the Brockport Blue Devils rebounded with an 11-1 win over Spencerport in the consolation game December 29 at SUNY Brockport. more

Churchville-Chili wins shootout
The Churchville-Chili Saints got shoot-out goals from Joe Ramirez and Joe Jackson along with stellar goaltending from freshman Dan Ramirez and defeated the Canandaigua Braves 4-3 in the first round of the 2000 Brighton Holiday Tournament December 27 at the ESL SportsCentre. more

Hilton-Parma Recreation offers Tai Chi
Hilton-Parma Recreation is offering a continuation of its popular Tai Chi program this winter beginning Monday, January 22 and ending March 19. Beginners will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and intermediates or those "continuing the form" will meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Village Community Center. Cost is $59. more

Hilton-Parma Recreation plans ski trips
Hilton-Parma Recreation will host two community ski trips this season. The Monday, January 15 trip will be to Bristol Mountain. The Tuesday, February 20 trip will be to Holiday Valley. more

Snowmobiling open at Letchworth
Letchworth State Park snowmobile maps and permits are now available. The map shows the snowmobile trails in the park and area connecting trails as well as providing the rules and regulations for snowmobile use in the park. more
