Brockport village officials close unsafe house
On Thursday evening, January 9, Brockport village officials cleared and red tagged a rental home at 11 Maxon Street found to be unsafe for habitation. The decision was made by Code Enforcement Officer/Fire Marshal Scott Zarnstorff, and Assistant Building Inspector Larry Vaughan. They were called to the scene by Brockport Police in the wake of a call from the home. more

Defense of Liberty Medal awarded to Master Chief Edward C. Reese
In the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, a call went out from Governor Pataki to the Naval Militia for volunteers to assist in organizing a recall of Militia members for perimeter guards, as well as rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site in New York City. Master Chief Reese immediately responded to his call. more

State Senator George D. Maziarz (R,C-North Tonawanda) is calling for local student entries for the 12th annual "I*MA*GREEN*NATION" celebration, a statewide competition that encourages student awareness of environment issues. more

The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) scheduled a public hearing to discuss the proposed reconstruction of Jefferson Road in the towns of Henrietta, Chili and Brighton in Monroe County. more

Rotary exchange student recaps trip to France
Eliza Brannigan, recent Rotary Youth Exchange Program student, spoke to the Brockport Rotary on persons met, places viewed and experiences and lessons gained. She presented a slide show, circulated a scrapbook and pamphlets, and described the high points of her year spent in France. The year away from home was considered by her to be of huge value in becoming a more culturally aware and mature person. more

Classes offered boaters and PWC operators
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 4-8 of Hamlin will be conducting the 8-hour Boating Safely class at two locations. The class is to certify boaters so that they can legally operate watercraft. In 2004, anyone, regardless of age, must be certified to operate a personal watercraft. more

Deadline for Brockport CSD Driver Education: January 24
The Brockport Central School District Continuing Education Department is now offering Driver Education. The deadline for registration is Friday, January 24. more

Lions will visit zoo this summer
Three lions are being brought to the Seneca Park Zoo this summer to be exhibited from April 1 to October 31. This will be the sixth year that the zoo's Visiting Animal program has brought special animals to the zoo. more

Valentine Day afghan on display at the Parma Public Library
The Parma Public Library has on display, a hand-knitted deep red afghan in fence row pattern. The afghan is being raffled off by the Hilton Book Guild on Friday, February 14 at the Parma Library at 11 a.m. more

Logel and Chase-Pitkin make 144 radon test kits available
County Legislator Tracy Logel (R-Chili) introduced legislation in the Monroe County Legislature to raise public awareness about the danger of high levels of radon in some area homes. Under the measure, which was introduced as part of the January "Radon Awareness Month" campaign, the Monroe County Health Department has 144 radon test kits that will be available to the public free of charge. The kits, available on a first-come basis, were donated by Chase Pitkin. more

Hilton Asset Ambassadors make contributions
Fifth and sixth grade students at Hilton's Village Elementary School helped gather, box and distribute more than 6,000 donations of food, clothing and toys to needy families this holiday season. more

SUNY Brockport names marketing communications director
Christine Florence has been named director of marketing communications at the State University of New York College at Brockport, according to Ray DiPasquale, SUNY Brockport vice president for enrollment management. more

The Genesee County Office for the Aging offers free income tax preparation for low to moderate income taxpayers and/or property tax credit (IT-214) assistance. Volunteers trained by the IRS and NY State Department of Taxation are available by appointment only for income tax preparation. more

Brockport Women's Basketball wins fifth straight
Senior Colleen Tabor (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) scored 23 points and added five assists with three steals to lead SUNY Brockport to a 73-47 SUNYAC women's basketball victory Saturday afternoon. more

DeLorenzo, Cadets beat OIympia
The Hilton Cadets jumped out to a two-game-to-none lead over Greece Olympia, but were forced to come from behind for a five-game win in girl's volleyball January 11. more

Fackelman clutch in Bees 2-OT win
Stephanie Fackelman only scored nine points in the game - but five of those came with the game on the line in Byron-Bergen's 63-59 double-overtime girls' basketball win over Batavia-Notre Dame January 14. more

Howard, Weinert lead Bees
Stephanie Howard and Sara Weinert won two solo events each and were on two relay team wins to lead the Byron-Bergen Bees to a 99-74 win over Oakfield-Alabama January 14 in girl's swimming. The boy's team lost their match 91-70. more

Rodas, Gaylord pace Eagles
Stacey Rodas scored 19 points and added 10 rebounds and Sarah Gaylord added 13 points as Kendall trounced Holley 61-23 in girl's basketball January 10. more
